HOLY C*APF*CK! MEECHES OMG!

Finally...
From info@oddworld.com:
:

Meeches were originally drawn and painted as being fairly green. But when Oddworld actually had packs of Meeches running in the Abe’s Oddysee game, they were more brown with redish stripes across their back in a dinosaur/raptor like fashion. Unfortunately, these were cut from the game before release so the fans never got to see them. They were very cool as many of them would be on screen at once and they felt like a pack of wild animals. Someday Oddworld hopes to show our fans how these would act in a game.

Typically, Oddworld designers would make the colors of a natural character to be the opposite color of the backgrounds that it lived within… all in effort to make a better read for the gamer.
Also nice to see that they're hopeful of making a game with Meeches in, which seems to show they're going to try to make more games eventually and that they're still active 8D

Chubfish 07-02-2007 12:57 PM

Thats actually pretty interesting. So they are brown with reddish stripes, sounds pretty cool too me! Thanks Zerox for asking!

moxco 07-02-2007 01:47 PM

Wait a second. Did a mod take this out of the Q&A thread?

Zerox 07-02-2007 02:50 PM

It's still in the Q&A, I just posted this thread as well, since it's not exactly a question, and no one asked for an answer, so...

skillya_glowi 07-02-2007 04:59 PM

Interesting! It's awesome that there might be a game with Meeches in them, although I haven't the faintest idea if and when it will come out.
However, they've got a lot of work trying to make up a decent story of how the Meeches came back. I mean, they are thought virtually extinct and suddenly start running around in packs.

But I also have a few qualms about the comeback, I mean, Meeches were really supposed to be the 'symbol' of the industrial world's disregard for the environment. I don't think a species supposedly being hunted to extinction would make such an impact if a few games later they were all over the place.
:fuzconf:

I don't like this new info line. Oh for the days when Alf would give a vague half-answer that would leave us guessing for ages!

Alcar 07-02-2007 06:51 PM

Since when does Oddworld.com still answer fan questions? *confuzzled*

Alcar...

Exactly. Thats what I thought too... o_O

ZANGG 07-02-2007 07:55 PM

To explain them returning... hm... Abe gets sucked through a portal to the past or something? :P

SligStorm 07-02-2007 08:40 PM

Hey, Its one thing to imagin right? and another too see?
Check this out. ofcorse since I havent made it in 3D then renderd it side view it looks rather strange... but still. This is perhaps the closest u'l get to a meech in a platform oddworld game. :p (unless they release an offical shot..)

Didn't you hear?
Oddworld is back in buisness ;)

Anyway many thanks for sharing this with us Zerox! :D

I don't see why anyone gives a shit about the colors, but the info on how they would act in the game is interesting.

Ozymandias 07-03-2007 07:36 AM

I agree with used. I don't really care about the color. I want to know what they do.

Ozymandias 07-03-2007 07:37 AM

I did not know that! That is awesome. What is their newest project?

what he said.

Jordan 07-03-2007 07:46 AM

Are Meeches carnivores? I always wanted to see how they acted in game, and how they ran.

OddjobAbe 07-03-2007 07:49 AM

Don't double post, Ozymandias.

Quite interesting.
Nice images, SligStorm!
I agree with Nate. The days where Alf gave us shit (but somehow amusing) answers were far better.

Wil 07-03-2007 09:51 AM

Ah, interesting new information. Thanks for sharing, Zerox. Finally, some less infuriating answers from OWI. ;)

So Meeches were intended to appear in Abe’s Oddysee after all. This solidifies some vague hints Alf left us with. So Meechonia really does exist. Very interesting, even if it doesn’t particularly clarify how we will end up seeing Meeches.

OddjobAbe 07-03-2007 10:59 AM

I don't think it'll be time travel or anything. I think it will just be a game set in Oddworld's past. No Abe. No Munch. New characters.

speed the scrab 07-03-2007 11:15 AM

Thats an interesting concept.

Zerox 07-03-2007 11:23 AM

Meechonia could be infested with Meeches, but undiscovered. Though Scrabs were pretty much not present in Scrabania where they should be, there are a few in the deeper parts of the temple where it can't be accessed by the Industrialists.

And off course, Oddworld may not be worried about the Meeches being regarded as a symbol of the industrialists habits, they still are in a sense, and weren't originally intended to. And I suppose there are still Gabbits to represent the industrialists carelessness.

...those are some pretty damn accurate colours, Sligstorm. I was rather unsure how to interperet the shaded of the brown.
Two problems with screenie, though:
A. Since Meeches lived in packs (and particularly since Scrabs weren't meant to, and still shouldn't), I doubt they'd be that big.
B. Shouldn't Abe be running away by this point? :P That is, however he ended up with the Meech there in a secret area O.o It rolled in after him, lol.

Also, one thing that's interesting is how they allegedly 'appeared in packs'. Does this mean they were actually created in game, at least in a sprite/model form? I'll have to ask with some other questions somepoint :P Or someone else can, if they want to. Feel free, just don't forget to tell all of us.

SligStorm 07-03-2007 12:53 PM

Thanks for all your nice comments on my coloured picture of a meech :D

Let's see... Those are cave art pictures of Shrykull and a Meech? They are pretty darn good Sligstorm! :)

Wil 07-03-2007 02:47 PM

Those are rock art glyphs of a Paramite, a Scrab, and a Meech, Jordan. Only the Meech one doesn’t appear in the game. I do love your Meech colouring, MoxCo. It looks quite 3D!

I imagine they would have been seen in an FMV flashback to show how oddworld used to be rather than in-game in the present. Similar to the FMVs when Abe first goes to Paramonia and Scrabania.

Wil 07-04-2007 06:11 AM

SligStorm, I apologise. I thought that ‘MoxCo’ was a perfectly acceptible alternative spelling. No idea why. *shame*
