Mandatory use of the Proper OWF URL

Effective immediately, the Oddworld Forums will now only be accessible using http://www.oddworldforums.net.

This is to prevent a number of security concerns and banned members being able to bypass the banning system. If you notice that you have been logged out, because you have been using the OWF domain without the www. this is the reason. Simply login as you normally would using the login form.

Furthermore, we would appreciate it if anyone linking to us, or any part of us, would now be aware and use the proper domain. As a precaution to prevent the improper domain being used, it is now being automatically redirected to the proper domain.

Max is going to hate you for this...

Jordan 06-26-2007 10:45 PM

Thanks Alcar. I wondered why some sites have stopped working without the WWW. :)

moxco 06-27-2007 12:36 AM

All I need to put in is oddworldforums.net!

Gretin 06-27-2007 01:22 AM

Heh, I've always put in www.oddworldforums.net, in fact I didn't even realise you could do it without :goof: But hey, it's just an extra 4 characters, don't tell me everyone's that lazy! XD

Bullet Magnet 06-27-2007 01:29 AM

How exactly do these desired effects work with the full domain name?

He should already know, I swear I either posted something about this a few months ago in Employee Lounge. Could have been a PM though. Either way, yeah, mwhahahahhahaha, bring on Max's Wrath!

Cookies for the banning issue, and the security issues are far too many to name or describe, and albeit a bit security sensitive.

Slig 7665 06-27-2007 08:29 AM

Well I have allways typed oddworld forums on google ahh well

Jordan 06-27-2007 08:59 AM

Meh. I've had the www. link on my favourites for a while. So it makes no difference to me.

Facsimile 06-27-2007 09:00 PM

You can't oppress us like this, Alcar. I'll use whatever damn URL I feel like.

Majic 06-27-2007 11:15 PM

Agreed. Alcar is a damned Nazi. I was willing to take the word count minimums, and the requests for courtesy, and the rules against spam. But this just flat out violates my rights as a free citizen.

Oddball1000 06-27-2007 11:27 PM

Damn lazy!

No offense, but crapping heck, to get this pissed off some people must be real damn lazy.

Its just a URL, 4 god's sake, am I right?

Gretin 06-27-2007 11:58 PM

Oddball, ever heard of a sense of humour? XD

Oddball1000 06-28-2007 12:14 AM

Eh? Wha?

What is this hu-mour you speak of?

(Sorry, I just tend to rant sometimes.)

Edit: I'm tired, sorry.

I remember this conversation, might have been MSN i guess.

I just type oddworld forums in the address bar and handy dandy Firefox brings me to here. Genius

Nate 06-28-2007 06:31 AM

It's not a matter of laziness, as typing http://oddworldforums.net will forward you to the www. version. It's more for if people link to pages or wonder why their cookies are no longer working. Or if they (ahem... Max) blackball pages that only have www. versions.

One of my many underhanded methods of forcing Max to "resign".

Lazy? Nah. Just any excuse to call Petey Wetey a Nazi over the internet. He loves it when people do that. Cough. Death. Cough.

To get this pissed off, you can't be lazy, this requires effort. Effort of fighting the man who's trying to hold you back! One day the people will rise against the tyrannous Alcar*.

*Teehee, it makes him sound like a dinosaur.

Mission accomplished, I’m off. Tara, lovers of superfluous, outdated initialisms.

Yay, double post. But my point: this was briefly discussed in Employee Lounge. I laughed at the idea of having a perfectly acceptable (and preferable) URL that caused technical difficulties, and later suggested to you in private to make all no‐www–compliant addresses automatically redirect to the non—no‐www–compliant address.

moxco 07-03-2007 12:52 PM

Um. I can still put in oddworldforums.net and it works. Just thought I'd tell you....

Wil 07-03-2007 01:44 PM

It works without changing itself to www.oddworldforums.net?

Alcar 07-03-2007 02:53 PM

It changes itself, it just goes unnoticed.

As for the technical issues, it could have worked either way. I just prefer the www., so I therefore deem the issues with not using the www. as the faulty ones.

Alcar...

moxco 07-03-2007 10:25 PM

Oh. I see.

Havoc 07-05-2007 03:46 AM

I never use WWW anymore. God bless firefox for being so powerfull smart! :D

Yes... Hmmm...:fuzconf:

It's server-side, not client-side. It does the same for everyone.

This change effects me in absolutely no way, this means this change is completely successful.

Facsimile 07-06-2007 11:24 PM

ARG! We haven't had to use 'www' for years. In fact I don't know if we ever did, I know I haven't. Even way before Firefox or anything.

It actually annoys me when I see my friends typing in addresses, as I'm the only person I know who doesn't put it in.
