Does going to work feel more like a prison sentence to you?

Just wondering how you guys feel about your job?

Do you feel you are stuck in a complete rut in which you long to escape from by winning the lottery, gaining an inheritance, or starting your own business etc, so you can raise your middle finger up at the boss, and tell them where they can stick their job, or are you in the minority who actually enjoys what they do for a living?

I'm a bit of both. Some days I enjoy going to work. I enjoy joking around with the people there. Most times the work isn't too hard so I enjoy it. But then there are some days where I just want to say "Screw You" and leave forever. The problem with my job is that I have been there for 5 years now and it is petty much a dead end job. Only a handful of people have actually gotten promoted and I feel as though I'm not really needed there. But honestly, the people there are what make the place so good. They really are a great bunch of guys.

What about you? Do you like your job or do you want out. If you're going to school then I guess you can substitute 'work' for 'school'. Except you get no money... Ha ha ha.

Gabiar 05-20-2007 02:37 AM

Getting up early in the mornings is the worst part. I need my beuty sleep!!!

Marvak 05-20-2007 03:33 AM

I'm still in school, but I'll soon get an after-school job so I can earn some bread... the people in school are all total losers, though -_- and I have to wake up way early because of my parent's new work routine, which means I'm forced to bed way too early, which means I never get enough time to do what I actually do anjoy doing... yeah, school hates me.

OANST 05-20-2007 09:41 AM

I like my job for the most part. I just can't stand the crazy Jesus lady that sits behind me.

Patrick Vykkers 05-20-2007 01:28 PM

I was unaware you were capable of not hating something.

I tend to find my job monotonous, often wishing I could opt for doppelgangers.

OANST 05-20-2007 01:56 PM

I was unaware that you were capable of not being smarmy. Scratch that. I'm still unaware of that.

I consider school my job. I've spent many a night up until near-dawn getting big assingments done. I've also had to resort to manipulating and taking things for granted just to get the job done. So I do kind of consider it a prison sentence as school has brought the worst out of me at times.

As for an actual job, I have none so far. I got an application at Giant Eagle, but I still have to get my work papers. The only weekends which I'll have good free time to get my papers will be over the summer, and by then all small jobs will probably be taken, and even if I do make it, that just means eight hours every week day with a bunch of druggies and wiggers. Fun.

Patrick Vykkers 05-20-2007 05:21 PM

If I'm smarmy, does that make the feud between Mutual Friend and me like a battle between Smarmy and Smarmy?

And on the topic of work, I like the idea of cryogenic freezing to avoid waiting. I'm an impatient son of a bitch.

SeaRex 05-20-2007 06:09 PM

I've been a server/waiter/whatever for about a year now. Overall, it's an OK job. It's a helluva lot more stressful than you might think. However, with tips on an average day, you could make around $10-12 an hour (if not more). Not bad for a college student.

Only problem is if you work at a shit restaurant (like me). I'm sure that anyone outside of the United States won't know about the Cracker Barrel restaurant chain, but for those who do, I'm sure you can imagine the type of subhuman scum (and senior citizens) that would eat there. Southern-style food. *shudder*

Doesn't matter. I'll be working somewhere else starting this summer. Still, you'd be surprised at how many Americans don't know the value of good service. Please, don't ever stiff your waiter. It is quite possibly the most asshole thing to do. Ever. Tip your waiter, you ungrateful pigs.

Work is terribly boring.

Prison? Not at the moment. Supervisor's have the luxury of doing what they wish - but I can see it eventually turning into a prison, what with the boredom and crap subordinates.

Alcar...

mitsur 05-20-2007 06:32 PM

School feels like a prison on A days, when I have all my boring classes at once (Spanish, English, Health) Science is the only good class during it.

B days are a bit better, because they aren't as boring (Geometry, Newspaper, Wood shop, drama)

snuzi 05-20-2007 08:54 PM

I'm currently unemployed, but am trying my best to get a job as soon as possible. I reallly need the money.

And school feels like a prison sentence to me. Having to deal with so many incompetents everyday is torture.

Nate 05-20-2007 11:11 PM

Work is not a prison at the moment, as I work with a friend and we have a lot of flexibility in how we do things. We even exhibit great customer service by avoiding them wherever possible.

The job application/interviewing process is a form of cruel and unusual punishment though.

Wil 05-21-2007 03:55 AM

For a true comparison, I would have to spend time in a prison, and I’m not prepared to do that. Also, for a true comparison, I would have to get a job. Which I’m not prepared to do. The idea of actually working fills me with dread and makes me seize with fear.

So yes, it would probably feel like a prison sentence.

OddjobAbe 05-21-2007 06:56 AM

I enjoy my job, as it's what I've always wanted to do, and have thought I'd never be able to qualify for it. But I have! I've been through msny jobs, and I have to say, this is my best!

Mutual Friend 05-21-2007 09:49 AM

Work is... like, a prison of the mind, yeh?

No, it doesn't feel like a prison sentence - work has more abuse and less anal sex.

Jesus. Stop trying to rub your own lameness onto me. There is no feud.

My job this summer is going to be more like a paid vacation. I'm going to be driving a boat around, photographing dolphins and then doing some boring but easy data entry this for $2500 this summer. Suckas. :p

moxco 05-21-2007 11:52 AM

School isn't that bad. Exept for english classes. In stead of spending an hour doing english I'd much perfer an hour doing nothing in prison.

Chubfish 05-21-2007 12:01 PM

I hate D.T (Design Tech). I don't hate the lesson, I hate the teacher because he says "Stop, stop, stop, just stop, DESIST!!!!!!1111" everytime the class doesn't stop talking, and one time he kept the whole class in just for someone clapping randomly during work. And we do alot worse than that and he doesn't keep us in. Well, it sorta is a prison sentence on monday's, every other day is fine.

Mojo 05-21-2007 12:24 PM

At my old job, I spent most of the time in the freezer. it wasn't that bad, hell, the work done there is easier than outside it, and the cold doesn't bother me, because of all the clothing, but the dust that's there makes me all smelly, and, umm, dusty. Even inside my throat. And I was making absurdly long days. Working from 08.00 to 19.00 was no exception.

Now I work at a pub. Which is totally awesome! I get to work on my English, so when I'm off to England, I won't look like a complete fool!

Rex Tirano 05-21-2007 12:41 PM

I love my college. It's terribly organised but everything else is amazing. The people, the work, the place.

I love going there. :D No prison sentence for me! XD

Last Week I was walking down the hallway and thinking, "I can imagine this being hell."

I think I speak for everyone here when I say that you'd be better off staying in English class.

Ok then, "two users who repel each other more than magnets and both view each other as pompous left/libertarian wing assholes".

Does anyone else wish the working week was only 4 days long?

That brings back horrible nostalgic memories of the infamous 'Dolphin' topic...

Ugh...

Shit, Nate. You beat me to it.

Chubfish 05-25-2007 12:51 PM

Yay, our teacher got fired for blocking the toilets! New D.T teacher, here we come! Finally, no more desisting or stopping for random reasons.

Fortesque13 06-01-2007 07:01 PM

You know, I wondered a few times why the hell do people say they have freedom!? When you're a small kid you're still free(in a way). Then the school starts, after school goes the job, after job you get a lowsy(spelling) amount of money to live thru your last years. Basically 99/100 of your miserable life is a prison sentence! Every day I do the same thing. Except for Tuesdays. Then I have to get on a train at 8 30 am to get to school and slave away till 5 30 pm, then take a train back and be home around 6 30.

But then again you might be having a nice job that you enjoy. Fooling around, joking...
But then again that all depends on what kind of a person you are. DAMN HELL, I'm gonna be the guy to make the best copy of GTA one day!!! And GTA's gonna suffer the same thing like Driver!!! It's gonna be wiped out by it's own copy!!! Until that day I'm forced to slave away...

Life's kinda like Oddworld...
