What about the sligs???

Why do some sligs have one long eye, and some have two eyes?I don't get it!

Zozo the Zrilufet 04-12-2007 04:48 AM

:PThe ones with long eyes had their masks changed because they didn't work right, they couldn't see and kept falling off edges and junk.

12345abe 04-12-2007 05:44 AM

Lol

That's funny, but I want some real answers...

The in-universe answer is that technical difficulties with the visor-masks caused stressful visual issues that would lead to accidents and suicide (though how much can be directly attributed to Abe remains to be seen; AO veterans will recall tricking sligs into walking into mines, off ledges and into electric walls by speaking, whistling and farting repeatedly) so a new, more advanced model was released.

The real answer is that the visor masks were not expressive enough for the collective slig character, and the new designs rectified that.

In future, the Oddworld Q&A thread will serve you well for questions such as these.

What I didn't understand is that in AE they use the same sprite for the Sligs as in AO. It looks like they have the old eyes in AE.

Zerox 04-12-2007 09:04 AM

I noticed that. Flying Sligs were newer, and so it didn't matter because they ended up with eyes, but it seems they couldn't be bothered changing the old ones or something. In the CG sequences, they have the eye holes. it isn't quite as noticable in the main game. Still a fairly big thing, though.

I can't ever tell if Crawling Sligs are actually wearing masks or not...I presume so, but isn't there normally a tube going into the pants or summat?

Oh oh! I loved doing that!
Shame they changed the mask in AE, really...

Yeah they do have the same sprite for sligs. They also reused Abe's sprite, which had 4 fingers. Yeah...

Zerox 04-13-2007 01:41 AM

You can't really tell the number of fingers Abe has at that size at all, though.

I never really knew how you could trick these Sligs...how do you do it? MUST KNOW.
I'm visitng my aunt and uncle tomorrow, so hopefully I can get AO back from them then. Been itching to play it.

skillya_glowi 04-13-2007 09:36 AM

Yeah you can...Well he has more than 3 at any rate, it looks like 4.

Xavier 04-13-2007 09:53 AM

looks like 4, whitch is logic since I doubt they would change everything just to make abe has 3 fingers everywhere in the game

skillya_glowi 04-13-2007 09:58 AM

It's funny though, since in the intro movie for AE he had 4 fingers in the first part, and it changed to 3 suddenly.

The crawling sligs have masks, the crawling sligs don't have tubes perhaps they can go without it.
I've also seen many normal sligs with and without the tubes, I'm not what the purpose of the thing is. Apparently its not mandatory.

skillyaslig 04-13-2007 02:33 PM

Maybe the sligs use their minds to control their pants...So the pants are like their real legs..But Valet doesnt have them at the end of MO so I dunno...still I dont get why the Japanese cut off abes finger

Fortesque13 04-13-2007 02:52 PM

You just stole my post! It's my idea! I'll sue you! (just kidding)
As for the valet... His tube is probably somewhere under the suit, or he has it installed elsewhere since he's got a high rank...

12345abe 04-13-2007 02:56 PM

Maybe...

Maybe it is connected to the inner body so it runs thru his whole body, right to his brain! Buut, one question. If they are controling the pants with their brains, how come they can't jump??

The mechanical pants aren't made for jumping, plus they are heavy.

Don't forget Slig Announcer, he doesn't have a tube either and due to the fact that hes not wearing a shirt I don't think he is hiding it.

Jordan 04-13-2007 03:37 PM

I always believe they have some sort of nerve running down from the brain, into their tail, and into their pants. The brain would tell the nerve to control the pants.

12345abe 04-13-2007 03:49 PM

Jordan boi:That's the same thing I am talking about!
Venks:About the newscaster... he does jump one time, actually two times.
He jumps when he yells: "The magog on the march-News you can use!" and when he says:"I'm outta here!" *throws the microfone*

I didn't say sligs couldn't jump, their pants are just heavy.
Why jump when you can take a refreshing nap?

Oh and here is what Alf has said on the subject:
:

Q: How come Sligs can't jump even when you chant one?

Alf: Given the shoddy manufacturing, it's amazing Sligs can even stay upright in their mechanical pants, let alone attempt to get athletic in them.

skillyaslig 04-13-2007 05:12 PM

Well sligs can kinda 'hop' but not really jump

12345abe 04-14-2007 12:47 AM

Yes, but too bad that ain't in the game. You could at least "hop" over a mine.
But... their pants have strange legs, like, they go up and down. Kinda reminds me of plumbers. You can see it in the FMV where they kick and take Abe to his death (AO ending, right after the board room)
If they have legs like that, why don't they pull the legs as high as they can, and then quickly down, so they bounce and then up again. That would probably make them jump pretty high. (not high like glukkons, but high)

Zerox 04-14-2007 12:58 AM

The newscaster Slig jumps downwards off the stage, as opposed to jumping around. very small jumps may be possible, but not enough to clear a mine, or climb up a level like Abe.

I presumed that perhaps Sligs controlled the pants with small movements of their 'tail', pressing buttons to moving forwards, backwards, and so on. But this seems less likely when you look at someone like the newscaster Slig, swinging his stuff all over the place, unless he has some more advanced controls or something for his job, having the nervous system connection, unlike worker Sligs who don't really need it. I thought perhaps tube was a control device originally.

How do Sligs stay in their pants? Given only a very small amount of the 'tail' is even in the pants, with the rest of their body lurching out forwards, I'm surprised they don't fall out.

skillyaslig 04-14-2007 01:10 AM

Maybe they use their minds or something...so the pants are like their legs or something. Dunno, maybe their minds are directly linked to their pants, making them controllable like normal legs...

12345abe 04-14-2007 01:14 AM

Here's a pic I made that shows how sligs should jump.
Step1:Get the leg totally up.
Step2:Smash the leg down so it bounces
Step3:Pull the leg up
Step4:FLY!(lol)

If you can't see the differences between these (the brighted ones) pics, then don't even try to understand what I'm saying.

As for you Zerox, I dunno how they stay. We do know they are most probably sticked in the pants, but I dunno how they don't fall and hang from their legs, with the tail in them. They also carry heavy rifles, and their bodies are heavy, but the tail is somehow strong to hold it. ???I dunno???

Thank you for finding us an glitch ...o.0 look at the time ...its out , anyway I was on the net. and I found some kind of interview and it said there : We have made only one eye becaus we thought its more expressive ^_^'' or somthing like that...So the slig has one eye just to look more cooler 0.o

Director Phleg_47 04-19-2007 12:34 PM

We have already seen a slig fall out of his pants, right at the end of AO, in the good movie ending when Molluck's slig gets hit on the head with lighting, a bit later after Molluck's clothes burn off the slig falls out of his pants!
