Your Video Game Hacks

I was wondering if anyone here had ever taken up the profession of hacking the binary in video game ROMs and ISOs, and if so, do you have the files for the ROM/ISO you hacked.
Just the other day, I bought the PC version of Abe's Oddysee and hacked a QuickSave into it. Though my PlayStation version of it was left untouched. I was afraid to damage it.
Mostly, I do graphical hacks. Using a hex editor, I hack the sega MegaDrive ROMs. Here's a simple graphical hack of Sonic the Hedgehog2:

You'll need KegaFusion to play it: http://www.emureactor.info/v3/main/s...page=Emulators

Once you're at Emureactor.info, select the download link for KegaFusion5.1.
Once you have KegaFusion, unzip the file, then click on the KegaFusion logo (which is the emulator), then click on 'run program', then go into file>open Sega Genesis/MegaDrive file, then open the Sonic ROM I provided.

I hate to tell you this dude, but I'm not sure if this forum allows hacks and junk here. But I know what you mean, and I've attempted to hack many games before, I'll list em.

Sonic 1- Graphical and music change-around.
Sonic 2- Same ^
Super Mario Bros 3- Level editing.
Super Mario World- Level editing and minor ExGraphics.
Oh yeah, and a couple of pokemon games- Wild pokemon change arounds, my funnest attempt! ^.^

Allow me to clarify what OddjobAbe is saying: are you talking about obtaining hacked copies of games or tweaking games you already own to do cool stuff?

In any case, this should be in NOG.

Jordan 03-10-2007 04:58 AM

I think he means tweaking the games. Oddjob, how on earth did you get Quiksave into AO? I didn't know there were any programs for hacking AO, or did you use some hex editor?

OddjobAbe 03-10-2007 08:44 AM

I borrowed a copy of AE for PC from a friend, browsed the binary files in it, found the binary code for the QuickSave fucntion, then ported it into the correct slot in AO.

Jordan 03-10-2007 01:15 PM

Awesome! I might try that now! I'd love a Quiksave in AO, it'll make the game way easier! XD

Nemo 03-11-2007 11:32 AM

I've never really hacked, but I do love using the time-altering buttons for my SNES emu.

On a semi-related note: I finally beat the third boss in Zelda : Link to the past.

moxco 03-11-2007 12:27 PM

I hacked age of mythology and mixed the sound effects.... the herroes baaed like sheeps and the pharo made dieing sounds instead of talking.

OddjobAbe 03-12-2007 07:43 AM

I've started a non-graphical hack for Sonic CD. I'm changing the music to previous Sonic games and TV themes.

Jordan 03-12-2007 08:46 AM

Awesome! Is it the Sega CD or Windows version of Sonic CD?
Good luck on whatever version you do! ;)

The SegaCD version. I copied the files to get the ISO from my Sega CD (over here, we call them MegaCds) So now I'm changing the music. I'll let you know when I've got the finished product. I've made Magnum PI the main theme, and Palmtree Panic has the music for Green Hill Zone.

Jordan 03-12-2007 08:52 AM

Cool! ;) Palm Tree panic with Green Hill Zone music will sound wicked! :)

I loved to edit the old C&C games. There was 1 text file that had all the rules of the game. You had to love giving normal infantry almost unlimited health and make them shoot nukes. Downside is it made your computer crash when they shot once and delivered 15 nukes to the battlefield.

Tiger

Hobo 03-12-2007 09:54 AM

Surely this is against the T&C. Whatever you're discussing is against most EULA as it's reverse engineering a product.

OddjobAbe 03-12-2007 09:58 AM

We're discussing our edits. Surely there's some kind of exception.

Nemo 03-12-2007 11:11 AM

ROMs technically don't have to be the same game.
It's possible to create an almost completely identical game with it's own set of Terms of Service made from the creator that allows edits and hacks.

Jordan 03-12-2007 01:56 PM

I don't see why hacking should at all be illegal in any way. It's just if you sell it you should get punished. I mean, if it's for your own pleasure, what's wrong with it?

Spirrow 03-12-2007 04:02 PM

Sure I hacked into and changed around the files of a city building stragedy
game called 1503 A.D. But it's an online cheat so pretty much everyone who plays the game knows it.

Jordan 03-12-2007 11:28 PM

I guess that's not the only thing you've hacked is it Spirrow?

speed the scrab 03-13-2007 01:09 PM

I had a go at hacking i hacked sonic 2 with a simple pallette change i made the emerald hill literally green!

Jordan 03-13-2007 01:12 PM

I can remember one Green Hill graphical hack I did... I turned it into a night level. I turned Marble Zone into a snow mountain. I turned Spring Yard into a casino. And Labrynth was an awesome Volcano level, it looked so awesome...

You hush your mouth or I'll give you a warning! Besides you have no proof, now. I could have easily just been boasting-oh yeah, right, the password.
Ever heard of the term "just a bunch of kids having fun"?

Ooh... I'm scared... Ever heard the term "Personal information?"

Spirrow 03-16-2007 12:55 AM

Nope...

Americans aren't particular about those things. That said, niether are Russians.
Ever heard of the term "Watch, Learn"?

Jordan 03-16-2007 07:38 AM

Wow... You must be pretty dumb then...

Spirrow 03-16-2007 09:48 AM

It's not in my nature. Dumb. I can outsmart you in everything except probably math.

snuzi 03-16-2007 10:37 AM

Honestly, Spirrow, stop this pointless arguement about who's more intelligent. You'll just end up making a fool of yourself, as usual.

Maths is the foundation of most logical thought. You lose.
