Avatar Size Restrictions

I have a small request concerning the file size of avatars on these forums. Right now it's 5.0kb, why is it this small?! Every time I want to upload a new avatar it's like squeezing an elephant in the back of a car, it just doesn't fit, or barely fits if you happen to have a really big car.

Look, the average file size for a normal 100x100 avatar is around 10.0kb, maybe 15.0kb. Whats the harm in raising the limit to 10 or 15 kb? really, 5.0 is a bit too small.

I support this motion, and to a lesser extent, the appropriate size boundries to use animated gif avatars. So everyone hates them, f'eh! :P

But yeah, I don't like the squeeze of images, it does get irritating sometimes.

yes, I know it seems like I'm hopping on the bvandwagon, but it would be nice to see some larger feasable file sizes and maybe allow us to use some animated avatars.

No, there is no point. Havoc, look at your avatar, it's huge! And you are complaining that it is too small...

Havoc 11-09-2006 04:06 PM

Read the post, I'm not complaining about the physical size, I'm complaining merely about how the file size is to small to do anything with when you have a 100 x 100 avatar.

My issue with increasing the maximum filesize of avatars is as it has always been - that it contributes to extra bandwidth being consumed server-wise and that it forces people on dial-up connections to wait longer for pages to completely load.

5KB is an awful lot when you really look at it. Using JPEG compression at a reasonable level of quality (75% is the common percentage) can produce 100 x 100 images between 3KB and 5KB. However, I can understand that there are situations where a larger filesize is warranted. Therefore I've increased the limit to 8KB. I think that's a very fair compromise.

As for animated avatars and profile pictures, I'm strongly against it - I think it's okay (begrudgingly) for signature images to be animated, but I don't want avatars flying around with flashy colours and do-dads.

Agreed with the lack of animated avatars and such, although I have animated GIFs deactivated anyway.

I never liked animated avatars. Some are okay, but most are just annoying. But thanks for increasing the milit slightly Alcar, it's greatly appreciated :).

Animation? Ewww. Nasty.

Arxryl 11-10-2006 08:21 AM

Cool. Thanx for up-ing the file size Alcar!

Thanks for keeping animated image files from invading my eyes, Alcar! :)

There are already animated avs on OWF, such as Hobo's, and (I think) Fuzzleman54321's.

Hobo 11-14-2006 11:25 AM

Mine is barely animated now is it...

I'd say that the filesize limit pretty much blocks any particularly ostentatious animation. I can deal with something subtle like hobo's.

magic9mushroom 11-14-2006 05:22 PM

I seem to remember a small one that had a guy walking.

Arxryl 11-17-2006 05:48 PM

I make many that have people walking and swinging a sword around and stuff like that, but I can see where that would/could/can/will get annoying. Besides, I like the way munch looks in the simple non-animated one I created.

I'd just use a JPEG resizer and change the amount of KBs to below 8KBs,
as well as maybe the size of the image.
