Music MK2

Let us talk of music.

The Flaming Lips? Any more fans out there?

OANST 11-06-2006 02:42 PM

Yeah, The Flaming Lips are great. They also work very well as producers.

I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but........I really like Modest Mouse.

SeaRex 11-06-2006 03:46 PM

Flaming Lips did a great cover of "Plastic Jesus."

oddveteran93 11-06-2006 03:52 PM

I havent heard of Flaming Lips, but Modest Mouse are pretty good. I've also discovered a few Trivium songs i like.

Kimon 11-06-2006 05:14 PM

The Flaming Lips are excellent at what they do; same goes for Modest Mouse. I can't say I'm a fan of their styles, though, or at least I wasn't in the past. I'm opening up to a broader range of music, though. Stuff like Bright Eyes, Say Anything, more lyrically-driven bands than what I used to listen to. So maybe it's time to give those guys a try again.

Although Muse is still my lovechild.

OANST 11-07-2006 09:09 AM

By the way, live versions of two Modest Mouse songs from their upcoming album (WE WERE DEAD BEFORE THE SHIP EVEN SANK) are now on youtube.

I've been listening to Holopaw and Built To Spill a lot lately. My girlfriend has been listening to TV On the Radio. I'm beginning to like them as well.

Fez 11-07-2006 10:14 AM

They are horrible quality songs on youtube though :P I'm waiting for the real thing.

Shame their only UK gig is over 18's too. That was a painful day :(

And Bright Eyes are bloody awesome too.

OANST 11-07-2006 06:21 PM

Here is a link to every song from the latest concert in perfect quality. Enjoy.

How about you cut the middleman and go straight to spoken word? Break Through in Grey Room by Burroughs I would suggest. Don't get Dead City Radio, it's shit.

...you know what really sucks? Taking your guitar out of it's bag for an assessment performence only to notice it's top e string had broken it's self spontaeneously. Boy that was crap.

ziggy 11-07-2006 09:10 PM

they're ok, I like wolfmother

Hobo 11-08-2006 06:27 AM

Wolfmother = O.K.

Dream Theater > Most

Mojo 11-08-2006 10:18 AM

So very true.

Anyways, I have re-discovered Staind, some of them songs are awesome. Like Epiphany, So Far Away, Open Your Eyes, and of course Outside.

Also, I started listening to My Chemical Romance today. Welcome to the Black Parade is pretty good.

Fez 11-08-2006 11:05 AM

Urgh.

Good link OANST. <3

ziggy 11-08-2006 02:54 PM

I should listen to Dream Theater I guess.

Me personally I can't stand Staind. But ya the Black Parade is surprisingly good. Any other MCR hate.

And ya gotta love Pink Floyd

Dream Theater > All

Fix'd.

Actually I've been getting back into Metallica lately, god they were amazing in their prime.

Mojo 11-09-2006 03:00 PM

I like the ballads Stain makes.

God, seems like I always like bands others hate...

OANST 11-10-2006 11:40 AM

Any band that purposely sets out to make a ballad is immediately on my hate list.

Leto 11-10-2006 04:23 PM

Agreed. You dont set out to make music, you make music.

...surprisingly good.

OANST 11-10-2006 07:02 PM

Yes, it is. I won't buy the album but I must say that I didn't mind listening to it. Not many rock stars playing the lute these days.

Rich 11-11-2006 03:00 AM

I'm going to see Kasabian and The Fratellis in December. I wish I was seeing Muse too though. :(

Leto 11-11-2006 03:10 PM

I'm seeing Muse at Big Day Out. Too bad there are only about three good bands playing this year.

Majic 11-11-2006 04:40 PM

I still don't see what the big deal over Muse is. Thilly Brits:p

I recently went through a pretty strong Aquabats phase. And it made me think of good ol' Mac. T'was a good man. I also went through a heavy infatuation with O.A.R. Anyone else whose heard them can vouch that while some of their material (particularly newer studio work) is pretty spotty, they have some really solid live stuff.

Have you heard their new album?

It's just not the same. No horns... I mean, the whole "ska" element was crucial to their music. Without horns, they just become a pop-punky Devo. Besides that, the lyrics just didn't "pop" with silliness like they used to. Everything just felt forced, I guess.

Majic 11-11-2006 10:01 PM

It wasn't the best work in the world- not by a long shot. Though what impresses me is how well they've managed to make the transition. Sure, they're not the same group that put out the glorious landmark we affectionately refer to as "The Fury of the Aquabats," but it's still a decent step above most of the current music industry. Granted, that's still probably more a shot at how stagnant artistic creativity has become. But you've got to admit, it's niced to see some people still doing their own thing. And besides, anything is welcome after their *highly* questionable experimentation with... as best I've heard it described, "glorified lounge music." At least I've heard that they're still a beast of a live act.

I quite like the Fratellis..
Doo doo doo doo doo doo...

Might see Dave Dulake sometime, £2 a ticket. WORST BAND EVER. But still quite funny

Fez 11-12-2006 02:23 AM

My band almost had a support slot with Aquabats once. True story. We turned it down coz it was ska night and we wen't ska and we thought we'd get bottled....

I'm seeing Muse in less then 2 weeks. Though I must say their latest album is quite bad. The band sold out. Shame when that happens.

Rich 11-12-2006 07:44 AM

I think I'm going to see Lost Prophets in April, who I dislike. Urgh, but I'm going for free because this girl said she'd buy me a ticket because she likes me, so its all good.

LOL, Muse haven't sold out whatsoever. You just see it like that because they made a slight change in style and you didn't like it.

Statikk HDM 11-15-2006 04:36 PM

I was caught trying, in vain, to pencil drum Death Squad. I just kind of mumbled under my breath. No way in hell was I going to admit to doing that.
I got a ride to school and the driver was playing Kanye West and he asked me if I liked it. I just kind of shrugged my shoulders. He then slagged me for liking "death metal". I like rap I just don't cream my jeans over Kanye West. If it was Immortal Technique or somebody out of Wu Tang Clan or about 20 or 30 other rap groups I woulda been into it.

They played many of the songs on the album on tour in 2004 and they have changed drastically in the studio to become more commercial. And Starlight has pop written all over it.

Assassin is a great example, it used to be 6 minutes long with a complete change in the middle and a tapping solo. Now its a 3 minute radio friendly classic.
