Random Oddworld Adventures (editable fangame)

Well, yeah. This is basically an editable fangame based on Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus. At the moment, it's far from complete, but it's available for you guys to play around with and stuff.

Since I became randomly unable to edit the first post of the old topic, I'm now keeping all the info on a seperate page. You may view this here:

If anyone has some spare time and doesn't mind ripping a sprite or two out of screenshots, please let me know ASAP. (Please use screenshots from the PC version of the game!)

Enjoy, and please report any bugs ASAP.

Hey, seems to work quite nicely so far. The screen size is quite good too.
When I opened it, my cursor went all massive, as if a magnifier was on a small portion of the screen, so I could move the cursor quite far off. Is this meant to happen?

gobbo 10-28-2006 12:07 PM

The cursor thing happens to me to, the only way to cure that is make the script hide the mouse, wich is pretty easy in dark basic. (even i can do it)

My real problem is that the shift and ctrl on the right side of my keyboard dont work with this version, and i cant get used to it. other than that i didnt find any bugs.

ZANGG 10-28-2006 05:49 PM

I plan to make the controls(even including the direction keys) customizable. In fact, I'll do that with the next update.

Edit: Updated.

My thoughts...

This is an awesome idea :D I actually thought of doing something like this myself once, but due to lack of time etc I never got around to it. But yeah, I've always wanted to be able to make Abe's Oddysee/Exoddus levels, so this is a pretty good thing to see. Of course, it needs a lot of work, but it's looking very promising!

As for the slog-possession thing you mentioned in your other thread, I think if you want to add features like that you should make it so they can be turned on or off in each particular level if possible; that way, if people don't like the idea they can turn it off in their level or vice versa.

Good luck, and keep up the good work!

ZANGG 10-28-2006 09:56 PM

Hm, nice idea. I should probably do that for a lot of the standard features as well. (For example, each type of posessible creature can be individually set as posessible or non-posessible. And you can choose how many mudokons can be alerted at one time.)

Zerox 10-29-2006 01:39 AM

Changing what can or can't be posessable might constrict alot of puzzle ideas.
I don't see what someone would have against posessing Slogs, anyway.
Is there any creatues we may add into the mix? Meeches (if we had sprites), Gabbit...? I dunno. Big Bro's would be good, though.

ZANGG 10-29-2006 06:41 PM

:

Changing what can or can't be posessable might constrict alot of puzzle ideas.
What I mean is, if you want sligs to be posessible in your level, they are. If not, they aren't. It doesn't affect other levels at all.

I don't really see the point in adding Big Bros. In 2D, how would they be any different from regular sligs, except bigger?

As for Meeches, I was thinking that myself. I'll finish the game first, and then if I feel like it, and people don't object too much, I might add them.

Gabbits... don't see how they could be used. But if you have any ideas, feel free to throw them at me.

As for against posessing slogs - it's a new feature. People sometimes get slightly annoyed at these.

Zerox 10-29-2006 11:15 PM

Hey, do crawling Big Bros! :D
Heh, anyway, Munch or something might be good iin a swimming section (the surface is seen at the bottom of one screen, and when you go down a screen, the screen is full of water).

ZANGG 10-30-2006 06:32 PM

Hm. As I said, I don't see how big bros will be any different from regular sligs, except the size. If you have any ideas, feel free to throw them at me, although they won't be high priority. (If I feel like adding them after I've done everything else, I will)

ZANGG 10-31-2006 10:25 PM

Today's update is quite a small one, just a different sprite for death. (The chant sound file is there, but you can't actually chant yet.)

Anyway, I received a suggestion that big bros should have night vision(ie: can see you in shadows), but at the same time, can't hear you as well, and won't hear you walking normally or landing from a short distance. I also had the idea that they should be able to "shield" themself from any explosions/shooting in front of them(anything from behind them would still kill them). What do you guys think of these?

ZANGG 11-03-2006 04:33 AM

By the way. Anyone got any ideas on how the hell to do the "zap" from the orbs? (I've added chanting now, by the way)

The chant orbs are now actually in there, minus the zap graphic... so any idea on how to do the zap?

ZANGG 11-09-2006 11:07 PM

Hm, is there even any interest in this anymore?

Anyway, just added lifts. Quite a bitch to do, but they're there now. Levers can't operate them yet, but Abe can.

Still looking for ideas on how to do the zap. Also if you have any ideas on how to do the ropes, tell me.

gobbo 11-11-2006 07:03 AM

Ofcours there is still interest in this.

Im not realy good with darkbasic so i cant help with the zap and ropes.

EDIT: for the ropes, stick a picture of the ropes with weels on the backdrop. Like this:http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g5...eus/kabels.jpg
and put the lift infront of it. When you activate the lift, these weels start turning.

ZANGG 11-11-2006 11:25 AM

Hm, so just have the rope non-moving? That could work, in which case, I'll leave it up to the level authors to decide whether they want to put it in or not.

As for animation: I can't be bothered doing animation, too time-consuming to get all the animations from the game and I also don't really know how to put them in. But when I release the source, someone else can add them if they want.

ZANGG 11-16-2006 06:17 PM

Well, just made a MAJOR update to how level loading works. You can now format the levels in a much neater way, as well as using line breaks. See the page and the level editing help for more information.

No actual changes to gameplay in this update though.

Spirrow 11-17-2006 06:57 AM

I can't open the program anymore, it seems

ZANGG 11-23-2006 07:05 PM

Attention everyone: The download link is currently down, as I no longer have that website. If you want the game, email me at sunriseh@maxnet.co.nz and I'll email you a copy.

aaj111 11-23-2006 07:27 PM

Heck yeah I am interested. Sounds fun.

As I am working with Zangg to help make his ROA game by ripping sprites and geting backgrounds for him and such I am releaseing the Easyplatform Program! Wich means you can create your levels with ease by knowing were the grid is and sutch. Note: This is just a Beta Version and may be inproved.

Enjoy

Useful tool. I'm using it as well for my levels now.

gobbo 12-10-2006 11:15 AM

I dont had time to learn how to use it, but it seems pretty usefull indeed.
