Nostalgic Video Games

This thread is gfor games you played or liked as a youngin. Have at it.
Inspired by this statement by BowdenBowdenBowden at Deadspin...
" I have a theory as to why Oregon Trail is such a great memory for everyone (that played it).

When you were in grade school, how often did you play Oregon Trail in study hall or comp. lab?

Now, how often did you finish the game? I'm willing to bet that 80-90% of the time, you didn't have enough time to finish.

You'd pick a profession, buy all your gear, get moving, ford a couple of rivers, or caulk your wagon and float across, shoot some buffalo and squirrel, find some wild berries, get cholera, get bit by a rattlesnake, pass Fort Kearney, get to Snake River Crossing, and oh, look, class is over.

Do you remember rafting down the Columbia River while your teacher loomed over you telling you that class was over and that you had to haul ass down to the cafeteria?

When you beat the Oregon Trail, you didn't just beat the Oregon Trail. You beat the system."

OANST 10-13-2006 12:52 PM

Oregon Trail was the shit. I certainly don't have the descriptive memories of it that you have but I certainly played the shit out of it.

Bullet Magnet 10-13-2006 01:23 PM

This was one of those old, heavily pixelated educational games provided on school computers, yes? I remember those. Some of them were bizzare.

Or am I completely, utterly, embarrassingly wrong?

Strike Witch 10-13-2006 02:49 PM

Heheh, probably.

I played the hell outta the first Kirby game. hehe, it was fun.

And Galaxian/Galaga ( whatever it was) was the best. First game I actually had a seizure from.

Arxryl 10-13-2006 02:54 PM

Super Mario world for the super nintendo, the legend of Zelda II: link's adventure, Mega man X, Congo's Capers and a few others...

And yes, I remember playing Oregon Trail. I never even got close to finishing it, but it was fun. It was almost a contest at school. See who could get the farthest before you had to go...

Leto 10-13-2006 03:12 PM

I went to Wilford school, so, you know, their computer lab consisted of two very aged computers.

Many to list:

Commander Keen
Jazz Jackrabbit
The Neverhood
Skullmonkeys
Duke Nukem
Mortal Kombat 1, 2
Castlevania SOTN
The Unholy War
Atomic Punk
Alex Kid in Miracle World
Heart of Darkness
Creatures 1, 2 and 3

Theres probably more, I just cant remember them right this second. :B

Arxryl 10-13-2006 03:21 PM

I just remembered Bonkers... that game got annoying, but I used to play it all the time. I also used to play street fighter II turbo, and Killer Instinct, Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda Oot, The legend of Zelda MM, Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart, Kirby in Dreamland 3, and Donkey Kong country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest...
Ah... those were the days.

Bullet Magnet 10-13-2006 04:10 PM

Ah, the Unholy War! I still play that when I can!

Rayman: The game that got me into gaming. Sweet.

A demo of Zero G Police. I just liked flying around, zapping the cars and trucks. I loved the way they came unstuck from the road, floated up from the ground and then exploded.

The Ghost in the Shell demo.

The original Lemmings! The first videogame I ever played. My memories of that are vivid.

I still play Heart of Darkness! I already had a PS2 by the time I got the one. Marvellous.

:Idol: 10-14-2006 12:32 AM

quake 1
super mario
one game with squery characters, wich I called panzers
And age of empires 2, wich was, and maybe it is still one of the best games i've ever played.

My game expirience was very poor when I was a kid. I used to play cueball (i'm not sure that this word even exict) rather then a computer games. We used to have some kind of a club next to my elementary school with games, cueball tabels and that sort of thngs. I was going there really often till our teachers and parents signed a petition for closing that club with this explanation: ''our students\kids spend more time in your club rather than in classrooms''. ........ It was fun back then...

To continue the the educational theme of my first post anybody remember Math Blaster? Solve all those problems, and then you get to the bonus round, where you fly around collecting food. But don't get hiT That costs lives!
And the junk food wasn't worth squat but if you ate carrots and healthy food you got points out the wazoo.
Shout out to the "Munchers" series, too. Look out for Smarticus, always sneaking in from the corners. That uni-browed schmuck!

Arxryl 10-14-2006 07:03 AM

I haven't played the first game you talked about, but I played the munchers one. that was good for it's time...

Bullet Magnet 10-14-2006 10:00 AM

I remember Maths Blaster and the Search for Spot...

OANST 10-14-2006 10:23 AM

Castlvania 2. The best castlevania ever made. That game was awesome.

ziggy 10-14-2006 07:12 PM

When I was really young I got a playstation and my first 2 games were Rayman and Tomb Raider, I still like them.

Kamille 10-15-2006 03:54 PM

conta, sonic the hedgehog, and games like streets of rage and golden axe because I liked playing them with my brother and sister before they moved out. Oh and FFVII because I beat it every summer as kind of like a tradition i've been playing that a long time but I let someone borrow it and I might be getting it back on tuesday I hope I let him borrow it over a year ago jesus

The first Prince of Persia! Wow that is an old game I really didn't know how old that game was until I saw an episode of icons about it I thought it was an original idea when I first played sands of time which was great all of them were cool, but I never played the really old ones.

SeaRex 10-17-2006 10:59 AM

Yeah, so I went back and played Earthworm Jim 2 this past weekend, thinking that I would feel all warm and nostalgic about it.

What a shitty game. It's funny how easy it is to cover up lame, contrived, and unbelievably annoying gameplay and design with amusing ideas.

OANST 10-17-2006 12:19 PM

I liked Earthworm Jim.

SeaRex 10-17-2006 02:02 PM

I loved EWJ. The character.

And I can't pass full judgment simply because I haven't played the original EWJ in ages, but EWJ2 had some awesomely original ideas that were hindered by broken difficulty (an insanely difficult level followed by something that's a cakewalk by comparison) and poor design, i.e. the falling grannies in the first level. Why would you do that to your player? Yes, it's funny, but it's also it's also annoying as fuck.

Once the novelty war off, I had to ask myself... why am I bouncing puppies off of a marshmallow again?

Statikk HDM 10-17-2006 02:59 PM

How about in the first one where EWJ is in that little glass bubble underwater and you can't bump shit otherwise you'll die. I EFFING HATE THAT LEVEL. For something aimed at the 12-15 market there was some really tough stuff in that game.
Also, the bungee level against the phlegm bad guy was hard, so hard.
I liked Skullmonkeys better. Though that had some levels that were total bastards, too.

OH GOD WORST LEVEL EVER.

You have rekindled memories of one the most frustrating childhood memories ever.

OANST 10-17-2006 03:36 PM

I do remember having a hard time with the phlegm guy.

Arxryl 10-17-2006 04:19 PM

I remember playing it for a while... and then a few days later the Genesis broke and well..... yeah. no more EarthWorm Jim...

Kamille 10-17-2006 06:56 PM

I rented the second EWJ and asked for it for christmas and got the first one and was like huh this isn't the game I played, but I like both of them the one I hated was that shitty N64 one its a funny game corporate lawyers in hell and a boss with a really long disgusting name that was the first one I think, second one was the best.

Bullet Magnet 10-18-2006 06:11 AM

Remember that Disney magic one on Saturn? Where you use you cape to turn enemies into flowers and things.

No one has said AO or AE. I suppose everyone plays them so often that they don't seem nostalgic, and never got to the point where they do.

Kamille 10-18-2006 10:35 AM

Oh man you had a Saturn I only knew one kid who ever had one, and I finished the Oddworld games not to long ago and coming on here every day isn't going to make me forget about them.

Bullet Magnet 10-18-2006 04:24 PM

Actually, I never had the Saturn. I first played it while in hospital (don't ask, seriously), and then years later a friend had a really old one, and during a party there one night a girl I just met and I played through the entire game and finished it.

Strike Witch 10-20-2006 03:24 PM

Earth Worm Jim....wasn't that the game where you knock over a fishbowl or something?

Oh jesus, I just found Galaxian again....whoever told those space invaders how to swoop has earned my hatred.
