Not again...

Why have we time-travelled this time Peter?

Dusan 08-31-2006 07:15 AM

Is there any chance to return posts from last few days.

DarkHoodness 08-31-2006 07:22 AM

Did they fix this last time?

Wil 08-31-2006 07:48 AM

I will explain things to answer people's initial questions. Alcar began upgrading the Forums to vB 3.6.0 (I think), but there were numerous debilitating bugs. The templates had to be completely rejiggered, and everytime someone posted, a double post was automatically created. He had to revert to the last backup of the Forums, which was luckily just 3 days old.

It's a shame, but nothing monumental has happened in the last three days, so we've lost nothing truely important. Alcar was working hard for several hours, so I told him to get some rest before addressing things another time.

Dusan 08-31-2006 08:27 AM

what inproved have that new version of vbulletin? Why do we need it?

Spirrow 08-31-2006 09:05 AM

I was going to ask if it means we no longer have to worry about post counts jumping from five to a thousand posts.

Edit: Because my post count went back 15 to it's original amount.
Finally.

Wil 08-31-2006 09:15 AM

Well I've never looked at vB before, but apparently 3.6.0 includes several spunky new inline features. The biggest improvement I can see is the new infraction system that should make moderation a doodle. When a user receives a warning, they are automatically notified. That notification includes a field where the moderator should explain the warning, which is something I think everyone will like.

There are also weighted warnings, so something like a signature that goes over our limits might not carry as much weight as starting a flame war, which would be a handy replacement for our “three strikes” system. Whether or not we'll implement that remains to be seen. It would require plenty of consideration.

There's more control over signatures. We won't have to go Nazi on saying “Your banner is too big,” because we can set automatic limits on the image dimensions.

And there's some spunky new abilities relating to buddy/ignore lists, quoting, RSS feeds, and ordering the posts in a forum.

Bullet Magnet 08-31-2006 09:53 AM

Hells bells. I've lost a remarkable essay length post! In fact, that whole thread is gone. Along with several more of my characteristically witty and intellectual posts.

SeaRex 08-31-2006 10:53 AM

I've been waiting for the Infractions system for a long time.

Hopefully, everything will start going smoothly for Alcar, because I want to try that baby out.

Slaveless 08-31-2006 11:09 AM

This is a shame, due to the fact that RPG section needs to be redone again. Do you know how annoying that is, to repeat three days of work, that took you some time to do? Yeah, it's annoying.

But besides that, it isn't too bad.

Wil 08-31-2006 11:36 AM

Wait a second… my signature has fixed itself! What?! This is an outrage! Alcar, you'll pay for this.

Yesh, it was a good post. Still, it was a thread Nate thought worthy of closing down, so… *shrug*

Speak for yourself. Hate to be an issue, but as RPG mod I have to say that this really messes things up in the RPG forum.
If you could warn us next time, it would give us a chance to copy some posts. Even if it means posting two bullitens in each forum.

I really hope this is worth it. Sorting out advance posting (which hasn't worked for me since the last upgrade, telling me my post is too short: that hapened just now trying to get the quote in) and letting you copy and paste from Microsoft Word would be nice features.

Oh, and the copy option on the right click bar. Hotkeys are fine and all, but an inconvenience when it only occurs here.

Matriar 08-31-2006 12:57 PM

Can this... "time-travelled"-thing... be repaired in future? :fuzblink:

Otherwise I have to show an awfully lot of pictures, screenshots and stuff to search and show here again... what sucks. :(

Well then all I can do is apologise on Alcar's behalf, and profer my own pity. There should be no need for you to create your own backups: they should be made automatically. Given the number of times this has happened, I hope it's going to be standard policy to create a backup before upgrading to a newer vB tech level.

Note that it's nothing to do with me. I'm just answering questions while Alcar's recovering. :p

Huh? What's stopping you from doing that?

metroixer 08-31-2006 01:02 PM

So THATS what happened to my posts >_>. I got a little creeped out there. Thanks for making this topic or else I would have went all O.o. Also this happened before? When?

EDIT: It seems that my sig picture is gone to and has turned into my old sig >_>.

Lost:
New "Stupid Shit" thread.
New "What do you look like" thread.

I suppose it won't be important by next week, but it's still a little bit of a bugger. :P

Daxter King 08-31-2006 01:31 PM

Meh, nothing is really missing that was that important. Though I did like the posts I made the last few days. :(
EDIT: Darnit, I was a sniper wasp before. I like that rank.

Rich 08-31-2006 01:45 PM

Technically, Alcar shouldn't have to warn us as it should've worked, but it didn't and that was out of his control. But I second the idea of backing up the forums before trying to upgrade.

And not being able to copy and paste from Word... WTF?

Wil 08-31-2006 01:51 PM

:

Lost:
New "Stupid Shit" thread.
New "What do you look like" thread.

All those threads really are are collections of links to external sites and uploaded images that should still be on people's local hard drives, so the core of these topics shouldn't be lost. What's more upsetting are works that are created spontaneously on OWF, such as in the RPG forum and some of our more spectacular examples of wit, humour and intelligence.

DarkHoodness 08-31-2006 02:05 PM

Yeah, I tried to work offline and look at OWF from an offline copy, but it didn't work for me. :(

Maybe this could work for other people though. Somehow.

EDIT:
lol, look what I found:
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://...orldforums.net

Useless to us though. :P

You're not gonna pin this one on me!

I liked Bullet Magnet's post. I complemented it in the thread. Sure, I may have said that thread was stupid and pointless but I could see others getting enjoyment out of it so I didn't close it.

Seriously.

Wil 08-31-2006 07:18 PM

Then why was it closed?

Nate 08-31-2006 07:29 PM

Surely the better question is how, if neither you nor I (nor, I'm assuming Xav, Alcar or Abe Babe) did so.

Heh.

I didn't really notice anything, though it may explain the absence of recent posts in the RPG I'm in.

You make me giggle!

All in favour of overthrowing Nazi Peter and instating someone better (Me)?

Matriar 09-01-2006 02:16 AM

Now have I to repeat all my deleted post or should I wait for a possible repairing of all this which makes my repeats needless?

Just a question...

Dusan 09-01-2006 02:19 AM

This new vBulletin sucks! I have to type my name and password every time I come here... shame. Am I the only one with that problem?

Jordan 09-01-2006 03:58 AM

This is weird, I hope this effing thing gets sorted out soon, fu** you vBulletin, not really, but sort it out somebody please ;)

Wil 09-01-2006 04:18 AM

We're not using the new vBulletin. We reverted back to 3·5·4.

:

I don't think there is a solution to the problem of the missing posts. If there were I certainly wouldn't have wasted 20 minutes creating yet another Q&A thread in GOD.

Alcar 09-01-2006 04:49 AM

I made the mistake of trusting the upgrade to go well, as it usually does. The posts are unrecoverable.

I spent from 6pm to 2am last night trying to fix everything after I upgraded to vB3.6.0 - but it just wasn't going to work. I'm going to have to wait until Abe Babe is able to give me the more updated version. Which I anticipate will properly do everything it should.

In future I'll backup immediately beforehand, and more likely than not, I'll setup a test replica of the OWF to sort out the styles, that way the time taken to upgrade will be a lot less.

Alcar...
