Starcraft

Anyone with any strategies for Starcraft?

Rex Tirano 08-01-2006 03:17 PM

I suggest searching 'Starcraft Strategies' into Google. You will come up with thousands of pages which will be able to help you.

Nope. When it comes to me and SC, I do it slow and steady. I do lose most of the time, because the damn people rush...pisses me off...

Here's one. Requires speed though.

When starting, select all your peons (Probes, Drones or SCVs), let them mine a mineral, and in the time that they're moving towards the mineral patch, build a new peon. Now select two of the other peons, move them to another mineral patch, and split them all up to 4 different patches. With a little practice, you can do all this before the 4 peons reach that first mineral patch.

On smaller maps, when playing Zerg (eg Bloodbath), set all your Drones on minerals, and don't build a new Drone. Instead, when you have 200 minerals, build a Spawning pool. When you have the money again, build a new drone. Then start saving for 6 Zerglings. Start scouting with the Overlord right away. You'll surprise many a foe with this.

Also, there's this fun map, Crystallis, which has a lot of minerals, and a few Vespene Geysers hidden in the mineral field. Find the shortest route to such a Geyser. Use all your peons to start digging it out. Some people tend to forget that, and just build a Barracks and fly it over. By the time it's on the other side, the opponent usually has some Marines, which will kill the Barracks. It's all about the gas here.

As for UMS games, I usually play Defense F or Golem Revelation.

For Golem Revelation: Choose Zerglings, and bury some in the middle. Then look what the opponents have. If one chooses Ghosts, bury some Zerglings in the line from the middle of the map to theire base. This way, when he attacks the middle, you do the same, and the lings all unburrow, and lose no time with running towards their goal. This way, I managed to get 200 kills in a short while.
Wait till you have 6 civilians before getting a special golem. Then position 2 in front of the first beacon, 2 in front of the second, one on the third, and one on the fourth.
Now, select the first 4, and move them towards the top side of the screen, clicking in the line that goes inbetween of the beacons. This way, you make the 4 civilians move at the same time, and creating 5 golems, instead of 2. The computer thinks you have several Golem combos. This way, you get a Marine, a Ghost, a Reaver, a Dragoon and a Dark Archon.

There's also the opposite: 1-1-2-2. This will get you a Wraith, a Scout, a Battlecruiser, a Queen and a Defiler.

Lastly: When you get the chance for one of the many "Very" special Golems, choose a Bomber Golem (Dropship) first. It's invincible, so a perfect spot to hide your Dark Archons/Marines/Etc.

I see you are also a rabid Cerebrate. Me too, although I don't mind the Protoss either. Could anyone give me some "normal game" strats? And I can't just google it, because my school has an effective blocking system.

ziggy 08-14-2006 08:45 PM

I think that terran is the best for people who are newer at it, zerg is best for normal people, and protoss is best for really good players.

THat's what I think. But I totally suck at online multiplayer. Use a lot of hot keys for extra speed!

magic9mushroom 08-15-2006 10:40 PM

Nah, protoss requires the least micro, so most people start protoss, while zerg has the most micro(as you have hordes and hordes of creatures) so n00bs lose when they play(I am a n00b)

ziggy 08-15-2006 10:59 PM

hmm i guess I was wrong. I thought Protoss were harder to use because even though they are more powerful everything costs more and its very hard to recooperate if your attack fails, and they can't heal.

Mojo 08-16-2006 10:14 AM

The can heal partially, with shield batteries.

But then again: Economics are best with Protoss. Building a building won't keep a peon from mining, they just throw in the warp-anchor, and return to their buisiness.

Anyone with more strats?

Mojo 09-28-2006 07:21 AM

Fast Muta Rush:

Build order (best used with the fast mining strat I gave earlier):

After the initial move to the minerals, scout with the Overlord.

9/9: Build Extractor, while it's morphing, you have 8/9 supplies again, so morph a Drone, and then cancel the Extractor, you'll have 10/9 supplies now. Works best when you have like 70/80 ish minerals, since it takes a little time for the Drone to move onto the Vespene Geyser. So when it's on the geyser, you should have 50 for that next Drone.

10/9, 100 minerals: Morph Overlord.
10/9, 50 minerals: Build Extractor.
- When Overlord's done and you have:
<150 minerals: build a Drone, then build Spawning Pool when you have 200 minerals
>150 minerals: Wait for 200 and build Spawning Pool, then at the next 50 a Drone
- Scout with the Overlord
- When Extractor is done, put 3 Drones on Gas.
- Keep building Drones. until your Spawning Pool is about 2/3rds done, it's okay to build a last drone at that moment.
- Try to have at least 150 minerals and 100 gas when the pool is done.
Morph your Hatchery to Lair.
- Meanwhile, keep building a few Drones (To replace the ones at the Extractor) and Zerglings (for early defense, a Sunken Colony or two is good too). When a pair of Zerglings is done, use them to scout if you haven't already found the enemy.

Now, it all depends on how much Minerals you have, and thus how many Drones you have.

- When you reach 300 Minerals when the Hive is half way to three quarters done, build another Hatchery.

- If not, keep building Zerglings, making sure you'll have enough minerals for a Spire when the Lair finishes. You have to wait for another 300 minerals after building the Spire, for a second Hatchery. Don't spend it on units.

Whichever way you do it, build a Spire when the Lair finishes.

Whatever you do, it's best when you have an equal amount of minerals and gas when the Spire is done. It's okay to have less minerals than gas, but it's bad to have less gas than minerals. In this case, use the extra minerals on Zerglings. Try to have 600 minerals and 600 gas when the Spire finishes. You'll have 6 Mutalisks to start with.

Now, and this is quite important, if you're against Protoss, get at least 8 Scourges, against Corsairs. 2 Scourges will kill a Corsair, so you're set for an initial 4 Corsairs. If you see him building more, it's wise to build more Scourges. Corsairs own Mutalisks, and Scourges own Corsairs.
(It's always good to have a pack of Scourges when you see they're going Air. Just don't use them on Battlecruisers.)

When the Mutalisks are done, use them to kill the enemies mineral line. Don't worry about Photon Cannons or Spore Colonies, they can be easily killed. Make sure you keep building Mutalisks, expanding to a second Vespene Geyser if needed. Don't forget to upgrade Zergling Speed, it comes in handy. The Zerglings can serve as either a diversion or a backup attack.

Somewhere after you built the 6 Mutalisks it's wise to build the rest of the buildings (Hydra Den, Evolution Chamber), to help against counters. Also, make sure you upgrade Overlord Speed.

This strat has worked quite a lot of times for me. Eventually, you can upgrade the Mutalisks to Guardians, supported by either Scourges/Devourers or Scourges/Hydralisks (Scourges as a backup, against faster (Corsair, Wraith, Scout) or bigger (Battlecruiser, Carrier) units).

Did you know that a Wraith/Science Vessel combo is great against a Carrier Whore? I played a game once, and the guy kept on Carrier Whoring (it was a Fastest Monet map, on a local LAN-party). I was busy getting a lot of Wraiths to take out one of my enemies' Main (Nexus/Command Center/Hatchery, there were 7 of us in total, in the game, ffa), when he came attacking me. I had about 14 Wraiths, all with max upgrade and Cloak/Energy upgrades. And 2 Science vessels with Energy and EMP upgrades. I used EMP on the group, killed his Observer, and within 30 seconds, all his Carriers (12 +!!!) were dead.

Hope this help a bit/

coupla questions:

why no scourge v battlecruisers?

why are you surprised that anti-air units take out millions of carriers-scouts+shield batteries does the same thing.

why use 2 scourge on a corsair-wastes damage

Mojo 09-29-2006 01:59 AM

2 Scourges will take out a Corsair immediately, so no further damage on Muta's, and you can focus the Muta fire on something else. Like a Cannon.

No scourge agains BC? Cos you need 6 for every BC. 1 will always be taken out, and you need 5 for destroying 1 BC. So it's a waste of gas.

About the anti air strat: People tend to forget that some of the "lesser" units can be good too, in my example the Wraiths. People tend to be overwhelmed when they meet a fleet of Carriers.
