Bat and Bees
For those who had played AO, these name will come familiar to you.
In AO, one of the Earthly things on Oddworld were the Bats and Bees. They were an annoying part of Abe's Oddysee, yet some thought otherwise. However, the complaints given to OWI about these creatures caused OWI to make AE without them. However, looking back, is that what you really feel today? What was our opinion on the Bats and Bees? Do you miss them in AE? Edit: Sorry, the poll didn't work out as expected. It said that I could only post a poll after 5 minutes making the thread. But I will just have to write it. 1- They made a challenge into the game and I missed them in AE. 2- I liked them both, but not so crazy about them being in AE. 3- I liked them both, but they just didn't fit in AO. 4- Down with Bees! Yah Bats! 5- Bats should get a life. Bees are my man. 6- Both make little kids cry. 7- They were annoying, but that's no reasonto get rid of them. 8- Why are we complaining about themnot being in a game or being in a game after all these years? |
I didn't noticed that so my choise is 2.
|
8.
|
2- and why are we talking about this anyways!!
|
I'll say 8 along with Used. I mean nobody really cares about something
as small as bats and bees. |
I don't get the nostalgia some people seem to have for the bats and bees. They were too Earthly, annoying as hell (especially the bats, whose movement patterns were difficult to predict, plus this is a game with NO AUTOSAVE!), plus they are made redundant with the similar (to bees) and much more fitting Fleeches.
|
8 defintly.
|
Bats fly around in patterns, too.

I drew an Oddworld bat, and it was definetely not earthly! I liked them. It meant you needed elum for some jumps because you couldn't hang. Come to think of it, the bees were essential to elum gameplay as well, and since elum was cut the need for them was deminished.
|
I actually thought the bats and bees were a great addition to the game. I felt they really helped to produce the ambience you find in the native levels. And it would have been absurd not to include bats in levels like the Paramonian Temple or the outer stockyards.
I also think you all should stop complaining about some things being "too real" in the games. Oddworld, after all, is meant to be a reflection of our own world's problems and negativities. |
Agree. If those things are to real, how come we (well some of us) call the AO the oddest game in quintology?
I do not think that "complainings" caused owi to make AE without Bats and bees. What about Elum? He isn't earthly creature. I think that they didn't want to "copy" all stuff from the first game because it would be very uncreative and stupid. |
The reason they didn't use many aspects of AO in AE is because they didn't want them to lose their luster. They intended AO to be unique, like they did every other game. Using the small, special things from AO in AE would have dulled down the big new feeling that AE gave us.
|
And to replace the lack of the game objects from AO being in AE,
they added new effects to make AE more unique in some ways. And the thought of bats and bees missing in AE probably never really crossed anyone minds when people played the game for the first time. |

And OK, I didn't include all of the reasons on why they were cut out, but that's what I got from it. But I agree with Used that AE being too similar to AO would have made them lose their luster. I perosnally liked Bees and Bats, since they brought a challenge to the game, since the rather big characters could quite the same challenges that Bats and Bees brought. |

I appreciated the bats and bees. They provided extra challenge and helped to populate the levels with life. It let us know Oddworld is a living planet in its own right, not just a wasteland spotted with the occasional predator. Their Earthly design didn't really matter, because they were only a few pixels large. The Wasp design in The Art of Oddworld Inhabitants looked Oddly enough, in any case. |
