F.E.A.R

Has anyone played this game. If so, did anyone end up in the hospital with a heart attack? F.E.A.R has to be one of the best horror games I have ever played. Resident Evil eat your heart out!

Unlike many of the other horror games out there, such as Resident Evil and Half Life, F.E.A.R isn't packed full of zombies that are posted in places you don't expect them. There are no monsters behind doors, no headcarbs jumping out of airvents and no zombies trying to eat your brains. Noooo, F.E.A.R approuches the horror element in a totaly diffrent way. It messes with your head. The music, or lack there off, is enough to make you think twice about what you're doing. And the second you start the first level the game gives you a very firm message that you never know what will happen. In classic horror games, you can often overview a room, or a hallway, and say: Okay something is so going to happen here. Or vice versa. F.E.A.R has the same situations, but you'll always be wrong. Everytime you think it's save, you'll scare yourself to death. And everytime something is going to happen, you'll sweat yourself while you walk trough a hallway where nothing happens. And unlike some traditional games, the music doesn't give the scare moments away. You just walk right into them and give you a heartattack.

Next to that great ellement of the game, there are also the graphics. You can clearly see that a lot of work has been put into the game's engine. The lighting is extremely realistic and your own shadow will scare you to death on more then one occasion. Also, this is (and I'm not kidding) the first FPS where I can actualy see my own feet when I look down! Revolutionary :p.
It's to bad that the anti-alliasing of the game is rather cheap, resulting in the great graphics of the game looking a bit edgy and blockie. However, after playing for a few minutes and having encountered your first scare, you won't even notice that anymore.

Anyway, to those who want to know what the game is all about. You are the new fish in an elite squad, the First Encounter Assault Recon, F.E.A.R. You have been chosen to be part of this squad for your super human reflexes. During tests at your training, recordings had to be played in slowmotion just to be able to see what you were actualy doing. It's a special ability you will be using very thankfully in the game.
The first mission you are sent out to is right away a nasty one. Some guy has taken controll of an army of 'replica's', an army of cloned soldiers that can be controlled and commanded by one psyhic commander. Your objective is to take out this guy and regain controll over the army. But greater powers are at play here, powers no-one is aware of... yet.

This is absolutely a very awsome game. And I dare anyone who wants to play this game to do so in a completely dark room, in the middle of the night, just your monitor, and put headphones on. It will be the thrill of a lifetime. Me and a friend, we're not even touching this game unless we're playing it together. We're not realy into scary stuff as it is, and this game is way over the top.
F.E.A.R is a game that will hunt you long after you have stopped playing. Which is what makes it such a great game. But no 13 year old kid should be allowed near it. They will have nightmares over it.

So, anyone else play this game. If so, what did you think?

SeaRex 04-28-2006 04:02 PM

A hear that the artistic design of that game is just to die for. Besides that, I've been getting the impression that it's pretty rudimentary shooting, with cyber-soldiers and bullet time stuff and whatnot, but I've still been dying to get my hands on it.

I can only hope that it comes out for the 360, because there is no chance in hell that my PC could ever handle it. Anyone heard any word of a port?

outlaw king 04-28-2006 04:07 PM

I was gonna get it , I love having the sh*t scared outta me , and it was a steal at 40 NZ dollars , but I opted for the popular sounding Oblivion , and it was the last copy in the store , how could I resist , Im only Human . I have been told , however , that the requirments are very high , and that somewhat dis heartened me , is this true?

Sekto Springs 04-28-2006 09:29 PM

Havoc, have you ever played Silent Hill? Just out of curiosity.

outlaw king 04-28-2006 09:39 PM

One of my first ps1 games was silent hill , it is VERY scary , I couldnt play it and traded it in .

Sekto Springs 04-28-2006 10:02 PM

Yeah, it is by far the most horrifying game I've played to date.

I will admit, F.E.A.R. had it's moments, I'd give the game an A- over all. Silent Hill takes the taco for horror.

Havoc 04-29-2006 04:56 AM

Never played Silent Hill, which is why I didn't include it in the row of games I mentioned. I was gonna, but then I'd be on slippery territory :P.

I guess we could say then that F.E.A.R is kind of the modern day equivelant of Silent Hill?

SeaRex 04-29-2006 06:59 AM

From what I've seen, I guess the psychological horror is somewhat similar.

Silent Hill is more about what you think is happening just behind a closed door. It's about what places and monsters represent within your character's fractured mind.

From what I've seen, FEAR is more of a "theatrical" psychological horror, with hallucinations and 'splosions and whatnot. I suppose both are meant to make you question reality, although it seems FEAR primarily plays with your head only, since it's seen through your viewpoint, instead of messing with both you and your character at the same time, like in Silent Hill.

Both do things a little differently, but they're still comparable (at least from my limited knowledge of FEAR). Man, I really want to play that game!! :D

Havoc 04-29-2006 09:54 AM

Same here! But I'm not touching it when I'm all by myself. Call me a coward, but I realy don't like that kinda shit XD. I had plenty of scare moments in the first three levels, and from what I heard it gets SOOO much worse... Spaghetti Monster be with me -_-

Ninjaxe 04-30-2006 08:13 AM

I want to know what the girl to do with it. Sorry to be a fuss but I dont want to spoil it too much for myself cause I have the game. Dont have the time to play it yet.

Does she control the dead in the game? The Ring/Grudge brought to life mixed with Ecounter Assult?

Havoc 04-30-2006 08:44 AM

Yea you pretty much summed it up right there. From what I read (and thats not much, as I don't want to spoil it for myself either), the story kind of has the same idea as The Ring, but with a twist. Thats all I know.

:

and from what I heard it gets SOOO much worse

Yeah, you heard that from me =P

I wouldn't lie would i?...AH A SMALL JAPANESE CHILD!

Havoc 05-09-2006 03:10 PM

Well it gets a little worse. I still think some of the creepiest moments are at the first 3 levels of the game. Either that, or you get used to them.

We just finished the game. Ending is... kinda cool, but a little short. Expected a bit more, if only it was some more plot development to lead into the sequal.
Damnit I so want the sequal.

the brew master 05-09-2006 10:52 PM

If you wait for the end of the credits you get some plot development you ungrateful bastard.

An Expansion has been confirmed for F.E.A.R...and there will defenatly be a sequal.

Ninjaxe 05-11-2006 05:20 AM

Yeah, you heard that from me =P

I wouldn't lie would i?...AH A SMALL JAPANESE CHILD!

nope she is no japanese girl. I stared closely at my screen during the FMV. Cant dely it she is sure a good actor. It feaky and scary.

bleh completed it and stupidly there is suspected sequel. All just a franchise theory. Although it was good gameplay and plot. It is the waiting that annoys me most. Same goes with Oddworld.

You want to rush...say hurry up. But at the same time you want them to make game so all based the problem of being ambiguous

the brew master 05-11-2006 01:00 PM

:

nope she is no japanese girl.

Holy sarcasm Batman. I know shes not japanese.

And like i said before...theres gonna be an expansion and theres 2 trailers for it up on Gamespot.

Havoc 05-11-2006 01:26 PM

I've got the games 'Directors Edition' and during the comments they actualy did say that they used influances off The Ring and such movies as inspiration mixed with The Matrix style action. Remember the gunfight in the lobby? That was what they were aiming for :P.
So in a way, Alma is kind of a Japanese inspiration :P.

Ninjaxe 05-20-2006 04:35 PM

may I add did you cheat? Honestly some bits I cheated. Sometimes it good to experience immortality once in a while.

SeaRex 05-29-2006 11:28 AM

Well, there is content download for F.E.A.R. on the Xbox Marketplace, so I think we can say with 99.99% certainty that there is definitely going to be a port to the 360.

Hurray! Now that I have a job, I can buy it too. :p

Mudoko_Jedi 06-20-2006 11:14 PM

I played fear at my friends, it kicks arse It wasnt that creepy considering I had my friend with me.

p.s. can some one give info on silent hill.

Ninjaxe 06-21-2006 02:13 AM

ok you want silent hill information in a FEAR thread. I am sure there is a silent hill thread kicking about. If not then try gamefaqs.com or just google it.

Seargentbig 06-21-2006 03:58 AM

Whohoho. Hoho. I tried this game at a friend's place, and I have to say... it was freaky. I mean, I didn't get far at all into it - far into it at all. The first level... there's a room and a hallway at the other side, where you see someone walking through the hallway, and I got through to the hallway and nothing happened. I am not joking when i say I bailed right there. I must have balls of alfoil or something... hey, I'm sticking to the games I know, then. And I don't know how significant this is, but I was scared.

Havoc 06-21-2006 04:13 AM

Ha, then the game did it's job :p.
