Interesting note on Sligs....

Has anybody noticed in AE, when Vice President Aslick is possessed, he talks to the Slig at the controls, that the Slig's voice is higher pitched than normal Sligs? For me, that simply means he is younger than other Sligs, but has anyone else noticed that?

Xavier 04-13-2006 08:45 AM

honestly I noticed but I only assumed it was to give him more personallity... nothing else

Oddish 04-13-2006 11:45 AM

Sligs voices have changed quite a bit since AO. In the early games Sligs had more of an echo microphonic sound, as if they were actually speaking through their masks.

OT: Oddish, where is that picture in your Avatar from?

Yeah, I think almost every returning species was given an upgrade in AE.

Marco the Glukkon 04-13-2006 12:33 PM

I just figured that he would be younger. To me, it sounds like a pretty awesome concept.

From Raymond's website. Don't worry, I think it's a personal design taken or inspired from old concepts of Stranger, and not an official oddworld image.

Dipstikk 04-15-2006 11:45 AM

Ha, I see. That's a head! I thought it was a Steef arm.

looney-bin 04-15-2006 12:52 PM

Pretty neat av, Oddish.

Anyway on a similar note about age, what happens to Sligs when they get too old to work? Do they shoot them or do they fire them?

The Sligs' voices? My thoughts are the same as Xav's. Although I do seem to notice tons of differences in each Sligs' face than the last one, O_o.

Yes, I love all of the images of his art on the website. Especially the sci-fi technology bits. I was considering making an avatar from some of his pictures in the past, but decided that I prefered Andrew Lloyd Webber with Japanese yaoi eyes, blood splatters and hellish flames beneath him.

Oddish 04-15-2006 02:11 PM

Yeah, it's pretty cool, it has such a musclular head.

Thank you, who ever you are :|

I thought they were anthro trees or something.

Oddish 04-15-2006 02:38 PM

Yeah it does look something like that, but seesing some other tree based designs by Swanland, I think it could contain some feature ideas coming from trees and alike.

I always thought the used them to bulk up the meat portion of scrab cakes and paramite pies. It is a fact that only 5 per cent of the novelty foods' meat content was from the animal described. How else do you explain the high production despite low numbers of wildlife? They also put scrubs in with it, and other, less exciting animals.

Also, on the sligs' ridges on their heads, are those nostrils, or spiracles? They seem to have a brown mucus dripping from them.

metroixer 04-15-2006 03:02 PM

I always thought it was the same slig in all of them. Cause I remember (Or maybe this was a different one) that one V.P. aslik came to the phone the slig was cleaning his nails (Which kinda seems pointless XD) with his back turned around saying "ya ya whaddya want?". Then again it might have been a different movie.

I always thought that was just protective bone, there seems to many ridges for them to be nostrils. I always thought the brown was just the skin, only blemished or discoloured. But that is a point, do Sligs actually have nostrils, as I can't think where they'd be, unless the ridges are their nose(s).

Wil 04-16-2006 12:49 PM

Ah, Slig nostrils. Just think, the very same thing was being discussed seven years ago. Obviously Sligs can smell, because the Flying Slig in the opening sequence of Abe's Exoddus declares “Somethin' smells!” shortly before his violent death.

Now assuming Sligs breath and smell through the same nostril-type apertures, they would be inside their masks, or else they're be breathing the industrial air pollutants they need their masks to filter out.

Sekto Springs 04-16-2006 03:32 PM

CONTINUITY ERROR ALERT!

Perhaps, the mask filters out the contaminant particles but allows others to seep in. That sounds a bit too advanced for a leather mask though. Well, then there's the theory the mask controls the legs, so I guess it's not too farfetched.

Munch's Master 04-17-2006 02:54 AM

The mask is leather? It always looked metal to me (or at least the visor mask did). Maybe that's just the colouring, but it definitely looked metal. And I stick with my theory about the pants: The Sligs control them, as special needles in the pants are injected into their neves when they put the pants on. They then try and walk in them, and it sends signals in their nerves, through the special needle-type gadgets, and int the pants' motors. And also, the nose issue might be that they don't have noses as such, for all we know they could (This is highly unlikely) smell through their mouths, their face tentacles, maybe even their tailtips.

Bullet Magnet 04-17-2006 04:25 AM

The mask isn't for breathing, it's to hide their face so that upper management doesn't have to look at them. They're just that ugly. I looked at the rendered images again and they still strike me as the slig's breathing holes.

If they are descended from swamp ancestors than the positioning would keep the holes above the mud for breathing. It also might explain why they drown so quickly- they can't hold their breath anymore. Plus the pants drag them down.

Flying Sligs have leather masks. Walking Sligs have metal masks.

Into what nerves? Sligs don't have legs, so they wouldn't have any nerves to control leg movement. It would have to be nerves relating to tail movement.

It's for both. Sligs are highly allergic to industrial pollutants and need their air to be filtered.

Munch's Master 04-17-2006 11:17 AM

Yeah, nerves in the tail. But somehow, these injector thingys redirect that movement into the legs. Hey, there's stranger machines than that on Oddworld, so it could be the case.

Nate 04-20-2006 06:59 AM

Yeah, I always figured that the tail controlled the legs somehow.

My guess is that their nostrils are hidden in the centre of their nose tentacles.

Glukinator 04-28-2006 04:33 PM

I always thought that the wire going from the mask to the pants sent signals from the brain to the pants to allow the pants to move.

Wil 04-29-2006 08:20 AM

I did too, but it was removed after Abe's Oddysee.

Glukinator 04-29-2006 08:23 AM

Maby they just forgot because it was back again in MO.

Bullet Magnet 05-01-2006 10:39 AM

Perhaps the tail uses controls inside the hip of the pants, and can direct the legs in that way.

magic9mushroom 05-01-2006 11:23 PM

Maybe they get a Vykker brain implant that allows them to control the pants

What???????

Xavier 05-03-2006 12:02 AM

would be a bit expencive to do that for each slig, don't you think?

magic9mushroom 05-03-2006 03:58 PM

Maybe but it is possible and it would explain the wires
