AO & AE 3D or 2D?

Iv been thinking.. I kno you play the games AO and AE in 2D but how dose that explane the graffics? Is it work of an amazing pixel Disigner or 3D work?

If Anyone thinks its 2D made then how dose that explane in game fly-bys?

It is a 2d game produced using 3d graphics.

So OWI modeled much of the background, foreground and character images in 3d and then rendered them from one particular direction. It's that which gives the graphics their richness and depth.

The actual characters are in 3D, then put into a 2D game.

If I didn't know any better I'd say you made this topic after a comment I left in the Fan Corner forum :P. But yea, I agree with Cullen and Nate.

The characters are modelled in full 3D, but they are then ironed out into flat sprites. There'd be no point in having 3D models in gameplay because the angle at which we view them never changes.

I agree with everyone, point made. And Sligstorm, please, please, PLEASE try to work on spelling.

Well that's what I meant, but the angle actually does change for Abe when he walks into a door or jumps into a well.

Nate 02-14-2006 02:56 PM

That's because OWI spent a lot of time rendering Abe for every possible situation. But the images are rendered to 2d and then animated.

Xavier 02-14-2006 11:14 PM

yep you don't have to go trough 3D to get great animations.
look at all the old catroons that exist out there, most of them are 100% 2D

Nate 02-15-2006 07:21 AM

Strictly speaking, the Pixar movies are also 3d models and animation rendered to 2d film.

Cullen Heath 02-15-2006 03:03 PM

No, Pixar films are comletely 3D.

Shrink 02-15-2006 04:06 PM

You misunderstood him.

Nate 02-15-2006 04:23 PM

Pixar films are made in 3d. But the image you are seeing on the screen is 2d, in that it has no actual depth.

Similarly, the sprites in AO and AE were modelled and animated in 3d but then rendered to 2d to appear on your screen.

Cullen Heath 02-16-2006 05:41 AM

They are not as 2D as Oddworld games.

Xavier 02-16-2006 10:22 AM

yes if you begin that way, there are no 3D games :p
only games with 3D engines rendering it to 2D in real time

sorry but is someone saying abe's animation in gameplay was first rendered in 3D and then renderd in 2D?

Nate 02-16-2006 10:42 AM

Animated in 3d, rendered to 2d. My point being that all 3d animation is rendered to 2d.
