NEW GAME?!?
Since everyone, including me is sad that there isn't any news of another OW game being released, I decided to make one. Of course for legal reasons I won't be selling it. I'll share it aroudn with people who are interested. I'll release a demo as soon as I can if anyone's interested. I'll need 10 people's "OK".
|
I'd say "hell yes," but this should probably be in Fan Corner, this being a fan creation and all.
|
Oh yeah I guess that makes sense. I can't move it though... *chuckles evily*
|
Cool!
Are you good at making games? |
Yes. I have software for this. I'll release the BETA v1 of the game when I've done like a really basic thing. Then, after my tester gives me comments I'll add sounds and more characters and release a BETA v2. Then make the final modifications, and release the "official demo". Notice the "s. I'm still respecing OW's copyright laws. :D
|
well good luck with your project, I'll try it when it's finished...
how much time will you spend on that project? |
As long as it takes. I've actually made a little BETA in wich I put a few characters and some controls. I haven't done the animations yet, and I need to put in sound. But hey, it's a beta!
If ya wanna try this little beta i've posted it as an attachment. There's still a lot of bugs though. To exit the game walk into the mine. :D Oh, and to people who say, what's this piece of crap?, don't worry the sprite's will get better. EDIT: ah it's too big. I'll com up with something... |
Can i get a copy when you've completed it?
|
BETA1 will give everyone a main idea of what I'm trying to get here.
http://rapidshare.de/files/13015340/...BETA1.zip.html scroll down, click free and wait for a ticket/code, then type it in the little box. |
You use gamemaker?
I'm guessing you took the platform tutorial and changed the sprites. hey, you can get some OW sprites to make it look a whole lot better I'm making A Super Smash Bros game, and tons of other games. It'll take me a while, but the games will rock |
BETA2 is out. This is the final BETA. After this I'll just make the demo. And as I said, the sprites will get way better.
http://rapidshare.de/files/13154621/...BETA2.exe.html Controls: Left, Right and Space. |
After I Download it, it still wont work.
|
what do you mean? it doesn't start or what?
|
I dont know. I Downloaded it, but then it wont do anything after that.
|
We have had a lot of fan projects. They are all pretty fun, but nothing I would be interested in realy.
I'm still hoping that OWF will make their AO engine (A.L.I.V.E, I think is what it's called) public for fans to use. Since they closed down the game department, and the engine isn't realy usable for the real gaming industry anymore, you'd think they can do all us fans a favour and let us mess around with the engine a bit :D. |

sorry for double posting but, Abeguy, you say I can get actual OW sprites?
|
Use the edit button mate ;).
I don't think Oddworld ever used sprites. Even though it's a 2D game, I think the character sprites are actualy small 3D models. But I only base that on the fact that the sprites in the game make very smooth movements when turning and stuff which you couldn't realy get with old school sprites. |
Ooooh!:) I say "Of course" for this. I'm searching everywhere for Oddowrld fan projects to extend the Oddworld universe and still keep me happy, but it's very hard to find any. Oh, oddveteran, will this only be for windows, of can Mac people donwload it and play it? Maybe that's why I've played none, because their all made on windows.:( I 'm not able to play your BETA. Yeah and the models for AO and AE look like small 3d models, but maybe they are sprites..not sure. Oh, Havoc, it is called A.L.I.V.E(Aware Lifeforms In Virtual Enviroments) Good luck in the final version.
|
Thank you. I'll do the best I can to make it compatible for other OSs. I might make some support DLLs.

I do believe they are sprites. Certainly not old school ... but sprites none the less. It's possible to make such fluid movement with sprites if you take your time to create each sprite.
Now: I played the betas. Not a bad start. However, there are a few things you may or may not want to fix: -When I died, the program closed. I suggest you change this so that it starts you again at the level opening. -I attached a screenshot of what happened when I jumped at the wrong angle at the platform. Although with a single picture it's hard to tell, I got stuck on the side of the platform (though not permanently, pressing left got me down). This also happens on the lower platform. I don't know if it was intended, but... I thought I'd point it out. And though I can't find it again, there is definately a picture on the web somewhere of Abe's individual sprites. If you hunt hard enough, you'll find it. Lastly, I'd like to be a tester for you. Good luck! |
I just played your beta. It was good, but like other people said, use the oddworld sprites. I have most of the abe actions: (Hope it helps)
|
Last night I searched around for proof if these are sprites or not, and I found a review of Ae talking about how they are actually sprites. If you think about, the oddowrld sprites work in similar ways like thes 3d - ish sprites in the Donkey Kong country games for the GBA and SNES. Too bad I'm posting this after you guys already found out. Thought you'd guys want to hear... Oh well....
|
Thanks for the support guys. I'll make sure my game will be awesome in the end. Since I have a lot of animation and other software just lying around, I might even make FMVs (movies/cutscenes).
EDIT: BETA 2 with installer tell me if it works people! http://rapidshare.de/files/13383789/install.exe.html |
It does indeed. I see you fixed the death problem.
For future beta releases, I suggest: See if you can - at least for now - change the sprites direction when they turn around. Like, they always face right, even if moving left. You should change that. The slig should - if possible - actually shoot. Just touching a slig isn't quite "getting shot." See if you can make it so that if you enter a certain part of his line of sight, he shoots at you. And I must again point out the sticking to the ledge glitch. If it was possible to make a video out of my gameplay, I'd show you what I mean. But if you miss a jump, you sometimes cling to the wall. Was this an intended element? If so, I'll shut up about it. In any case, something I wanted to mention before but somehow overlooked: I like the background. I assume it's supposed to be a Paramonia-type level? |
Ugh... I hope you make a BETA for Mac OS soon. The new one you had is still a .exe file. You should make 2 versions one for Windows, and one for Mac if you can. Paramonia is my favorite landscape so I must play! Mac support is needed.
|
Wow, that is pretty good!
I really love it for just screwing around, but it would be great if you could make some more levels, but make those much harder. I would have to agree with Dave on every point made, exept the edge one. I really like that. It's kinda like Abe is hoisting. But as I've said, this is great and I think you should continue with more levels. May I ask, how many hours have you spent TOTAL on this??? Keep up the great work! |
I think Game maker games work on all os's
But guys, remember, this is Game Maker, it is Oh so hard to make game maker games Mac compatible if it isn't, so chill and if you get the macs with the intel processors, it might work, cause they'll probably be able to run Windows XP on it and other things previously only working on PC's and the slig thing, make it so In the Slig object in the step action make it so if object_abe is at postion, say, x:100 y:0 and set it to relative(abe is to the right), then make the slig shoot, however you need another one that says if object_abe is at postion x:-70, y:0(abe is to the left) and set it to relative. and then make the abe die thing. that should help |
Cullen Heath, I spent like 30 min making that one level with all the controls and stuff. Then I just kept screwing around withe the settings and made the installer (about 20 mins). So If you consider getting the rescources and stuff, about one hour.
The problem I'm having now is that I can't come up with a proper title or a good storyline. I should've written a script before starting this project. |
