HEAVY METAL!
This is a type of musical discussionationizzybizzybominationargleminnargleflarklefloo.... uh... But it's only Metal, Alt Metal, Gothic Metal, Industrial Metal, Math Metal, Tech Metal, etcetra etcetra related.
I guess all we really talk about is our favorite metal bands... I like for example: Old (keyword: OLD) Metallica, Iron Maiden, Otep, Slipknot, MuDvAyNe, Meshuggah, and Cradle of Filth... |
Holy crap. Kill the caps on the titles.
Anyway, I'm not a huge fan of Metal, although some of it is tolerable for me. Just about the only band I like enough to by CDs from that is remotely metal would be System of Down, although they've kinda gone all poppy/alt rock/metal or whatever the Hell you want to call it. Their self-titled album though... that was killer. They need to leave the singing to Serj. That guy can turn anything into gold. The only real problem I had with their new double album thing was that the little weasely guy got WAY too much singing time. Stick to songwriting and backup lyrics, Daron. |

I love heavy metal. I don't care what band plays it I just like it. It's so destructive and gives me evil thoughts. (And i'm christian. Heh ironic. :P) I also like the music style. Just plain out crazy :).
|
I don't know if I would call that ironic. Just.....confused.
|
General Music Chatter anyone?
I generally dislike heavy metal, as it sounds terribely monotonous. It's just not my thang. People who go on about Led Zeppelin being the first heavy metal band are stupid. Is that supposed to make them good? |
Zeppelin weren't metal.
I don't mean to sound... Whatever, but have you really given metal a chance? There is so much out there, it's hard for it to all sound the same. My personal recommendation to you do help you sample it, is Dream Theater - Pull Me Under. |
I gave a bit of Dream Theater a chance. There were some ok songs, like the mellowish complete Muse ripoff stuff for instance. But stuff like Panic, that kind of metal I just dun like.
I was raised on metally things, since my brother was into it muchly. Now I think he's into that romanitc gothic metal? Opera-esque stuff. |
Some of my favourite heavy metals include Uranium, Molybdenum, Tungsten, and Iron.

Dino, you're still here? And you've actually gotten lamer?! |
Wow! Facsimile is being an ass! What a complete and utter surprise.
|
Heh, I was gonna say a similar thing like Dino...
|
I'm with leto and his opinions on the beardy metal people.
|

:) |
How about you stop following Dino around, then we'll talk.
|
There wasn't any following involved. I read a thread and Lo and Behold! you were being an ass yet again! I was just shocked to see it.
|
OK. Stop, peoples. Really now.

I don't see how people can say heavy metal sounds the "same". Thats preposterous to me. There are so many different sub genres, views, ways to sing and play that I have a hard time believing it. I guess I liek the older stuff better. My thoughts on the current music on the radio and what is "hardcore" is as follows:
Why do you play so fast...to be cool? If you think you'll last...you're just fools You try to be something...that you're not And all you do is fill our ears...with rot You claim to play hardcore Well that's a bunch of shit You're just a bunch of snot nosed kids A real group of tits You make your bed you lay in I bet it's made of shit You think you're all so macho I bet you all have clits You're just a douche crew You're just a douche crew You're just a douche crew You're just a douche crew We offered you our hands You just turned your backs You're just a bunch of poser douchbag Faggot, dickless, hacks Wearing all their douchy clothes They like to watch each other pose They're all the same, so ****in' lame We'll shove their spikes right up their holes |

Hell, I think that all rap/hip-hop sounds identical, even though I know for a fact that it all of it couldn't possibly be the same. I'm just not familiar enough with genre to tell the difference between bands and singers. It all blends together, simply because the style doesn't interest me. |
Testament are a rather good band. As are any other band which use good guitar solos and complex drumming, rather than just the usual beatkeeping crap. But Testament in particular, who kinda remind me of White Zombie mixed with American Head Charge and Lamb of God. Anyone into this sort of thing?
|
Yeah, they're a friggin' great band. Chuck Billy has a great voice. Early on he could do the yells, screams, and whines like that and later on when he went heavier with his band he sounds like a damn demon. The playing is really tight, too from the Scholnik days of big time solos. They've also had some tremendous drummers, Hoglan, Lombardo, Tempesta, Bostaph. All around a great band start to finish.
Metalheads should be discussing a Big 5, in my opinion. |
:
None of this aesthetic stuff, trying to sound like something in particular, they're throwing in stuff that sounds good to them, to make a song that has meaning. I don't mean to be stereotypical here but there's something really special about a band that's really way better than all the others, that doesn't try to be like anyone but themselves, that not many people know about today... I nod my head to the rythem that bit harder when it's coming from a band like that. This is why I've actually stopped listening to emo completely, as I was just realising more and more as the days passed that the bands on my playlist had barely any interesting or new ideas between them. Don't get me wrong I know all about working within conventions and how music is a contradiction in those terms, but I just wasn't getting the same feeling with that music that I was and still am getting with metal like Testament. So yeah... there's hope for this thread yet if we can get a few more people talking about this stuff. |
I just downloaded some Testament songs, Electric Crown, Return to Serenity, and The Legacy among them. Are these good songs? I really like Return to Serenity, because, as you said, Dino, it's really different. There are some awesome vocals, pump-me-up guitar riffs, and really solid drumbeats. The other stuff reminds me pretty heavily of Metallica though. I'm not sure if it's because I don't listen to much metal or if there actually are some startling similarities. Either way, Return to Serenity ****ing rocks.
By the way, does Coheed and Cambria count as metal? Their lyrics are screechy and emo and shitty, but they have some pretty fabulously rockin' riffs and such. |
Coheed and Cambria are experimental emo... it seems that the emo, scene, and that general direction has merged with the "intellectual" outlook, in that electro, IDM, experimental, and other similar intellectualist mishmash has barged it's way in, in a creative outburst, and been latched onto with permanent grip. Seems the kids like that sort of thing.
Reason why I bring up electro and IDM is that they're part of experimental movements, and they're associated with intelligence, and quite intellectual people. There's a whole aesthetic going on with it, quite unfortunate really because there's some good stuff lurking in there, and the snobbery is something that just surrounds it and makes a nuisance of itself. But it's there. This snobbish, aesthetic of intellectuals, has become part of what it is to be emo at the moment... it's very "scene" to like experimental, and weird indy stuff. Coheed and Cambria is basically just a really accessible version of that. |
Kimon:
in it and having lower, sinister vocals. Demonic is a good album, but for people who don't reNew World Order is a great Testament album, its what is now called Bay Area Thrash. Good riffing and some showy solos. They continued along in that vein for a while and did pretty good. They started to get "heavier" that is ramping up the amount of drumming ally like that type of metal or are used to the Bay Are Testament stuff it can be quite a surprise. My favorite album is The Gathering, however. Its not that popular of an opinion among Testament fans but the line up is just insane. Best song on it is probably Down For Life. Quick beats, great hook, and some intelligent and introspective lyrics. Other songs to Download Over The Wall Hail Mary What does anybody think of the new Cryptopsy album? I got it about a month ago and I have to say its on of their best albums. The drumming as is fitting is absolutely mindboggling. |
