Self Portrait

Here's something that started off as a quick sketch and soon turned into a depiction of me lookin' all dorky as usual - only with a huge ass sword. Anyway, this is what I have so far, but I'd like some input as to how I can improve upon it; particularly the blade seeing as I can't digitally colour a bladed weapon worth nuts.

Hey thats cool! What do you use to make this? Photoshop or Flash? (Looks photoshop to me, due to the sun filter I see on the sword :P).
Looks pretty cool, I like the cell shading, and the comic look. Very nice, keep it up :D.

TomFrogman 01-18-2006 11:16 PM

Yeah, it was hand drawn picture that got scanned into Photoshop CS for editing. The cheesy lens flare filter was a dead give away but I had no where else to go with it :P

I like how it looks! Although taking a closer look it seems like the left hand only had 4 fingers. Or is it supposed to be like that?

Havoc 01-19-2006 07:41 AM

It's supposed to be like that. Havn't you ever noticed with most cartoons characters only have 4 fingers? That was once made up to make it easier for artists to draw a hand and animate it. It's hardly being used now in big animated pictures, but you still see it every now and then in art and TV cartoon shows.

TomFrogman 01-19-2006 08:19 AM

Yeah, I'm quite a big fan of old-school western animation, cartoons and drawing style. I find it hard to watch anime and more recent animated flicks (unless it's CGI) because everyone's such a stickler for keeping things realistic and boring now. :P

Having said that, the arms and left hand in my own picture are placed on really awkward angles and that bugs me. But I'm always my own worst critic.

This is realy good, awsome stuff. It looks very smooth, nicely done. Does have that professional quality.

Keep up the good work!

Thats a very good habbit, actualy. I have the exact same. I keep making art, and when it's done I keep seeing stuff that needs to be better the next time. So I improve the next time and I see more flaws I need to improve on. And so it goes on, and you only get better and better at it. So it's not a bad thing to have at all ;).

Heh, thanks for the kind words.
I don't have any others relating to the theme of 'Self Portraits' but I may post up some unrelated art sometime...
