Dolphins as a sex symbol?
A couple of weeks ago a guy-friend asked me what was the whole thing about women and dolphins. I didn't know what he was talking about. What "thing?" He looked sort of sly and embarrassed and half-smiled and said something like "you know...how dolphins are like, kind of sexual, to women?" I had never heard of this before. He said that when he went to the sex toy store he'd seen a ton of dolphin-themed sex toys designed for women. And he said women always seemed to really like the dolphin image. He figured it was the bottlenose. I don't know, maybe. Maybe Dolphins look like one giant, sleek, muscular, undulating, marine dwelling penis. I had never thought about it before. I figured everyone liked Dolphins because they have that friendly looking smile and the squeaky laugh, and they look playful and stuff.
Turns out Dolphins are the asshole frat dudes of the ocean who, although very attractive, are also bullies and will gang up on sharks and on other dolphins. Groups of young male dolphins will surround a young female and harass her. Anyway, did you all know this sexual use of the dolphin? Did anyone else ever think it was gross and weird in Greek mythology when Gods disguised themselves as animals and raped women? Women were raped left and right back then and that was horrible but it really gets you thinking about how horrifying and bewildering it would be if a freaking SWAN started coming on to you! What a nightmare. - Rexy |
Dolphins are really intelligent, and with intelligence, comes bullying, killing for fun, blood sports - all that stuff.
I thought it was quite strange when people like Zeus disguised themselves as animals and 'raped' women. Yes I did. Anyway, I would know about the dolphin/women thing. It's the first I've heard of it. |
To be honnest I never heard of how dolphins are supposed to be kind of sexual to women. And thats coming from a guy who is active in a community where human-animal relations are taken to the max...
I've met plenty of people who feel attracted to them, but never have I heard about it being a 'general' thing, or that dolphins are by definition a symbol. And in addition to Rexy's story: Dolphin Toy... And yea, I guess that with inteligence comes brutality. Dolphins can indeed be very aggresive creatures when cornerd, or even in the wild. Tho I think the harrasing is more of a instinct then an inteligence thing. |
That must be why you like dolphins so much, Ambi.
:p |
I've never really heard of dolphins being sexual at all (except for that one story I read...) but I always thought the whole greek myth thing was really odd. I never considered it 'raping' so much as freaky women being seduced by swans or bowls of petunias.

Or falling whales.

Oh noez! You've finally figured out my OTHER secret, Luke! (The first being my undying love for Rexy.)
I can't ever recall hearing that dolphins are sexual symbols to women, but I want to say I have. For some reason, it seems like I have... But I think people are drawn to them for their friendly-lookingness, intelligence, grace, etc. Dolphins are one the wild animals people can feel most connected to and whatnot. I can sort of see how they could be a symbol for a strong woman because the traits one can describe for a dolphin could also apply to a woman. Intelligent, strong, graceful, beautiful, curvy, playful... and who can deny the mysteriousness of both creatures? |
It could be a sex symbol, on a recent episode of Drawn Together, Foxy Love used a lightsaber as a sex toy to show Wooldor how to masterbate (sp) and little dolphin shaped blade jutted out of of the handle. So it is quite possible.

I think that is because of the dolphin-shaped dildos Rexy was talking about. I have seen some like that myself and wondered what was the point.

I just think that there's some sort of strange connection to penises. Long, thing, strong, smooth... Or perhaps that's a phallusy. *boom tish* |
It could be cause it sells, if you like something your more inclined to buy it, and if its a dolphin, and women like it, then they have a higher chance to buy it. Seems like a marketing scheme to me.

EDIT: Oh, I thought of another trait. Dolphins are often used to symbolize freedom, and usually women are thought of as seeking someone they can be sexually free with. This could be taken as their being attracted to the dolphins, but I think it's more likely that they want to be as free as the dolphins. Again, another situation in which women can identify with the creature. |
I've....never noticed that before.....
Just goes to show how bizarre this world really is.... |
