Fan Art: It's as easy as 1-2-3!

Here's a request to all you regular fan artists. I'm curious as to the steps you take when drawing something. So maybe you can scan your picture in during various stages of developement. I don't know why, but I think that would be very cool...I'd do it, but my steps are pretty much Step 1: Draw picture...

Alector 11-22-2001 06:14 PM

That was a cool idea, Fuzzy! i started to draw this creature after i saw this topic :D
it's a creature of our fourth comic - the pet of the vampires
k, i'll start now:

Step 1:
This scetch is how i start my drawings
http://alectorsenshi.piranho.com/step1.jpg

Step 2:
You see, i drew the eyes darker and muscles
http://alectorsenshi.piranho.com/step2.jpg

Step 3:
I made more details with an other pencil there
http://alectorsenshi.piranho.com/step3.jpg

Step 4:
The first shade
http://alectorsenshi.piranho.com/step4.jpg

Step 5:
I shaded the spikes black
http://alectorsenshi.piranho.com/step5.jpg

Step 6:
The details are in a darker shading than the body
http://alectorsenshi.piranho.com/step6.jpg

Step 7:
Ok, that's the 7th, and the last step of this drawing. I used an other pencil (again) to draw this creature a little bit darker
http://alectorsenshi.piranho.com/step7.jpg

I used 3 different pencils totaling

Step1: Outline.
Step2: Detail
Step3: Coulor in.

Wow, that's facinating, Alector!

Alector 11-26-2001 06:47 PM

well, this topic isn't very active...what a bummer!
I really would like to see the drawings steps of the other artists around here

Andrea 11-26-2001 07:05 PM

Anyone seen my two Oddworld fan arts at the Oddworld web page? I think most of you will like my Disco Abe...

Nyeh, I keep forgetting to scan as I go along... and now I'm out of ideas to draw... Wait, wait, I think there's an idea halfway to forming... *squints* Yeah, I'll draw that. It's suitably mad...

Maybe I'll go fight with my cralfrappy scanner tonight and see if I can force a scan of a pencil drawing out of it. Although I doubt it. Ho hum.

Gluk Schmuck 12-01-2001 10:49 AM

1. draw main details
2. draw smaller details

There you go, and I only used one black pen. Hmm, no wonder my drawings are rubbish!
Hmm, pencils, you say? I think I've heard of those. I'll have to try that next time I have graphics (It's the only lesson I take both a HB and a 2B pencil to).

***Blah, this picture's taking too long to colour, so I'll upload what I've got so far... This is Slate and one of Rach's characters, BTW (Zilathoga), I just forgot Zil was meant to be more dragonny, so she's a winged jaguar-thing in this...

***Right. This is obviously not a scan of the actual picture, as I always start off reaaly lightly in pencil, and my scanner won't scan pencil Maybe I need a new scanner... *beats it*)
***Anyway. First off I scribble out a very very rough outline, just so I can get everyone/everything where I want it... (Yes, I know it's bad. Isn't that the whole idea...?)

***Once I've got that far I start to work in the details. I like using a mechanical/propelling pencil for this, as you don't have to sharpen it. I usually use a 0.3mm with 2H lead, as it's light, and the lines are always nice and crisp...
***I never stay in one place for very long as I work, which means I always end up scuffing the pencil work if I lean on it (another advantage of using 2H lead - 4B gets very messy). So I don't lose the bits I like, I work those in in ink. I ususally use a 0.1mm technical pen (UniPin pens are nice). I try to never ever work at a table, as I always end up pressing too hard and losing detail; I instead sit on the sofa or on my bed, tuck my knees up and use them to press on. As an example, the picture on the right is part of the semi-finished version, the one on the left is just as a comparison (this is how my pictures look if I lean on a table - ugh). I think it's really just an excuse to crash out on the sofa and watch telly, but hey. *shrugs*

******

This is the "halfway" scan...

There's a LOT of pencil going on in the background of this (you may be able to see little "ghost" lines all over the place, that's all the pencil my scanner managed to scan), you just can't see it...

Eventually I'll have worked in all the detail, and it looks like this. Voila:

(Scanner ate a few of the lines, but never mind.) I'm currently working on colouring it, so maybe I'll have a scan or two of them after the weekend... I forgot how tricky it was to colour black things.

Xavier 12-01-2001 12:55 PM

wow amasing, good...
I like all yours sketches, they are very beautifull

Sl'askia 12-01-2001 01:51 PM

heres mine. (BTW this is Teal's Slate, my version of him *grins*)

First I start out with an outline...seperating the areas of the body into sections.

http://www.angelfire.com/art/dragado...ons/Slate1.gif

Then I go in and add in the details and erase all the 'unwanted' lines.

http://www.angelfire.com/art/dragado...ons/Slate2.gif

After that it depends on what I wanted to do with the pic; whether I shade it using pencil or to color it. In this case I plan to color it so I inked it and erased all the pencil. (unfortunately...my scanner decided it wasn't going to be nice and not scan anymore until I do a complete restart *growls* so the two final pics will have to wait...)

Xavier 12-01-2001 02:17 PM

hey cool, one, I like it very much!

Alector 12-01-2001 05:57 PM

This topic is really interesting! I hope more people will come and show us their steps! *can't wait*

Sl'askia 12-01-2001 09:21 PM

ok here is the rest.

this is the inked one.

http://www.angelfire.com/art/dragado...ons/Slate3.gif

and when I color (on the computer anyway), I start out with the main colors. (main skin color first, then stripe and underside coloration(if applicable), followed by the eye, claw, and spine/horn coloration (if applicable))

http://www.angelfire.com/art/dragado...ons/Slate4.gif

After that, if I feel like it (which in this case I didn't) I shade and highlight using white and a much darker shade of the skin color (I hardly ever use black...I find it too strong a color for shading purposes). BTW I use Photoshop for coloring mainly, though sometimes I'll use another median.

Alector 09-14-2002 05:33 PM

*is afraid of atusiya@*

Well, this topic is quite old. And because of the last webspace I used here, it won't show you the drawings on this board anymore because Piranho crashed for a long time ago. But you can try to copy the link and paste it to your searching bar.

Otherwise I'm going to upload them again.

atusiya@ 09-16-2002 04:08 AM

TANX! Alector

We ( my father and me) can try to copy the link and paste it to our searching bar.!!
We look your pic (step1.2.3.4.5.6 and@7)

We are waiting for your new upload to pleasure.!!
:D
