I'm bored, girlfriend has gone home and I'm not tired enough to go to bed, so this is just to kill some time and provide a few laughs.

My most recent observation; The oddworld forums is a game.

The reason for this theory? Think about it - you log on each day, and by posting entertaining content designed to earn the respect of others, you work your way further up or down (but preferably up) the ranks. If you command enough respect among the forum leaders, you can make it all the way up to being a moderator, which is a highly saught after sacred status.

Modship increases your % chance of earning respect after making a comment, as well as giving you certain god powers that give you a serious advantage over other gamers. Also, it carries an inherant advantage, in that suckups hoping to fast-track their way to high status will automatically side with you, adding weight to your arguments and alienating your opponent, thus removing his respect. Modship also has one other inherant advantage, in that you have the unconditional support of the most powerful members of the forum - this allows you to effect powerful "moves" that are beyond your sole abilities.

The following goals are all inherant in the sacred modship, but may also be persued in seperate quests - custom titles, access to the employee lounge, the ability to break the rules without consequence, etc.

Above all, respect is the currency of the game. And like it or not, if you've spent any amount of time trying to gain respect, you've played the game.

So have you played the game?

I generaly don't see forums as a power game. I get along better with forum members who have been around longer and who generaly don't behave like a retard. But I don't see them as my superiour or something. Just becouse someone has seven stars and I have 4, or of someone is a moderator, doesn't make me respect that person any more then he/she deserves. If I think someone is a retard, I'm likely to just say that when the situation permits it.

Building up respect is something you do all the time. Not just on forums and not just online. ou try to build respect at work, at home and at the bar as well.
I think there is a certain amount of people here who have earned their respect fair and square. But no, I don't think being on a forum is the same as a game.

..."Goodbye" means "lurk around and gloat from time to time" now? Why was I not informed of this? Seems like a pretty big change for the english language as we knew it.

You're not proving anything to the members of this forum beyond the fact that you're incapable of saying something and then doing it. You're either here or you're not, not both.

You also seem to think you've claimed victory over us in some way, and you've been rubbing this dilusion in our faces, trying to make us look foolish. You're living a blissful little fantasy in which you believe that you've toppled the Oddworld Forums like a monument of some kind, and we're all crying and lost and begging you to help us see the light. It's not happening, it most likely never will, and you're only making yourself look stupid.

Who's more the idiot here: the forum or the guy who won't leave the forum, no matter how many times he's said he would?

You're forgetting that most people on forums do not care in the least what other members think, because its all just entertainment/fun. And everyone knows conflict = fun for everyone.

Ah. So I see this thread is turning into quite the 'I hate Dino Thread (237 v7)'.

God damnit, everyone. You all have to admit that the forums have been very dull and boring recently. So Dino comes back, then everyone comes to say "OMFG DINO U SED U LEAF NOW DO IT OR U SUXXOR". Now don't you think driving a member away who puts up a good fight and adds to arguements longevity is a tad idiotic when the forums are so stale? As JesusCheese said, conflict is fun.

If nobody listens to this guy, then that will be it, I'll just spend all my bored hours on myspace, while tabbing guitar and sending it to my band-mates over msn.

Anyways, I must disagree with you on this point, Dino. Because it isn't really a game or anything, ppl just post and stuff. And I can prove you wrong. Mods aren't always powerful and stuff... Take me. I'm a mod but have i ever been treated like any god-mod or whatever?? Nope, and i prefer to stick that way. There are just ppl who like power and ppl who don't... If you're saying this is a game, then we could pretty much clasify evrything as a game...
But it's and interesting theory anyways :)
