We're All Going To Die

Bird flu is going to kill humanity. Well thats what the medias saying, but what do you think? Overblown rubbish or real threat?

I think there's a good chance of it causing havoc in some countries, but i get the feeling it'll be SARS all over again, some people will die, but not as many as everyone thinks...

metroixer 10-17-2005 09:14 AM

Meh I ain't worried. As long as my journey in life ends well then I won't mind...

Dipstikk 10-17-2005 09:21 AM

I knew the birds were out to get us! That sinister gleam in their emotionless eyes...

Bird flu? Is this the same flu that was making such a big stink in the Canadian bread basket last summer? When we were supposed to report every dead bird we found so the government could come pick them up and do tests?

If it is, it's probably just big overblown rubbish. I think the medical world just wants to keep everyone frightened, medicated and inside their homes. Conspiracy and all that.

Currently, you can only contract it by physically dealing with birds who have it. It is not contagious among humans, and may never be.

Mojo 10-17-2005 09:52 AM

Currently, I am studying Influenza, for school. I have learnt that common human flu is consisted of five types of proteins: H1, H2 and H3, in combination with N1 or N2. That means there are 6 types of common human flu.
Usually, people who say they have the flu, only have flu-symptoms. The real flu can be lethal.

Usually, Avian-Flu (bird flu), isn't contagious for humans. HOWEVER, the components of human flu, and avian flu CAN be mixed, for example in a pig. Let's call this the "transport vessel" This has happened before, and the outcome was an avian/human flu known as H5 (avian flu)/N1 (human flu). This will make humans suseptible for this kind of flu. If this flu could be transmitted between humans, we would have a big problem. And since there is no prevention/vaccination for that, simply because we haven't seen this type of flu before, the chances are great that there will be a massive outbreak of this flu, namely an epidemy, or worse, a pandemy. Many humans will die, simply because there's no cure. Fortunately, this flu was almost harmless, killing only 6 people, because it wasn't transmittable between humans.

BUT, and this is the tricky part, there are known cases of humans acting as "transport vessels", where the human flu is mixed with avian flu. And this means that there is a chance that this new form of flu (let's call it H6/N2, fictional name, not yet seen in real life), can be transmitted from one human to the other.

Currently, the birdflu has been found in Greece as well. Researchers are now testing of this avian-flu is the H5/N1 type, or another.

So yeah, this Bird-Flu ISN'T like Sars. It can be worse. MUCH worse. Think Plague. A little less dangerous, fortunately, but still a large threat.

This is just one of the many scare tactics used by the media to increase ratings. This sort of thing happens so often, you really can't take it too seriously.

I heard a lot about bird flu recently, that they found a lot of dead birds in Romania, and it might come to the western countries, but we don't have to worry, because this flu is only harmful to birds, etc. I don't really know what to belive.

Ooh. How cinematic this is all becoming.

Honestly, I don't think much of this thing. If it turns out to be nothing, well, at least it will have spiced up the news for a bit. If it becomes some sort of huge epidemic or pandemic, well, we'll just have to see how that goes, shan't we? But there have been scares before, and they've never amounted to anything in my lifetime.

It's cool that we have a resident pathological expert. Disease is so much more interesting from a medical and scientific standpoint.

Ehh, Bird flu, Hurricanes, massive flooding...

I hope I get to see it...

MojoMan220 10-17-2005 04:33 PM

What really gets me, are all these nuts that believe it's the end days...

I think the Bible says that along with the natural disasters, animals will turn on man, or something along those lines. Keep in mind I'm no expert on the Bible.

metroixer 10-17-2005 05:08 PM

Well before any real stuff happens to us like the bible says first all christians/God Believers/and children to young to decide their path will all dissapear in thin air. Anyone left behind. Is forever screwed...

Well, I think we are at the very beginnig of the great decline. Iyt all started whn we elected Bush. I thought 2000 was going to be a dawn of prosperity, but instead, everything has gone downhill.
