MMO's...
Is it just me, or do they suck in general?
Almost every massively-multiplayer game is an RPG with a D&D style combat system (click and watch), so no matter how much they preach their originality (Ooh! This creature is new!) they still end up being the same damn game. Who decided that all MMORPG's had to have turn-based combat? I would absolutely love to have an MMO that followed in the steps of Ninja Gaiden. That would be totally fun, especially if it was an RPG. It would give the actual illusion that you are controlling your character. I'd love it to pieces. Now, I've learned that one awesome Korean development group (Webzen Games) is making an MMOFPS for the PC and Xbox 360 using the Unreal 3 engine. I'm totally physced! More developers need to realize that the Internet is not only for RPG's, but for all sorts of games. I personally hope other developers take note of Webzen's ingenuity and start expanding the MMO world. Here's a link to the Korean game. It's called Huxley. Post McEdited, complete with New (And Ultimately More Reliable) Huxley Linkage |
Ummm WoW isnt turn based.... same with GW....
Also not all online games are RPG, such as BF2, Call Of Combat, Chess (lol its fun). |
:
And BF2 and Call of Combat aren't MMO's. |
World of Warcraft is different, you can't just click once and watch, you've gotta use lots of special techniques and moves, not to mention items like dynamite. Though I do hate just killing constantly, mostly in WoW I just hang around in a tuxedo in a city, role=playing or whatever.
|
:
|
Well, you can click and watch, but then you get killed, which I'm sure any logical person wouldn't want.
|
:
Anyway, that's not what this thread is about. This thread is about ingenuity in the MMO world. So what new genres would y'all folks like to see hit the world of massively multiplayer games? |
I always wanted to play Everquest, but I think it's dying, but I don't for sure. Does anyone on here play Everquest?
|
Kimon, that link just gave me a list of games, none of which is called "Huxley".
I am so digging what you're saying. I used to play D2, until I realized it's the most God-awful thing in existence. The fighting is, as you say, "click and watch", except it's a bit more like... "just keep clicking the f*ck away on it until it dies!". Also, there's the whole thing of items. D2 is one of those games that seems to be based solely on items. "Dude, you've gotta get three Tard runes, a Bastard sword, a perfect ruby and have a strength rating of 100000^x, and then you have to transmute all the items in the Horadric Cube and you'll have Bonecleaver's Magical Sword of Killing!". One month later, "Hey, check it out! I finally got it!". "Dude, no one uses that piece of crap anymore." ARGH! I want to see a online Fable 2. Almost everything about the first one was perfect. If there had been more customization available for your character, and if it had had an online option, and if had been longer and more open-ended, it would have been the perfect MMORPG. |
:
:
However, Fable had a certain charm that I think would be ruined with l33t-speak and other such Internet foibles. I suppose if there was some way to filter that kind of thing out, then I'd let Fable touch the now-dirty waters of MMO-ism. |
:
Reliable Huxley link. Kimon, you devil, you! As for MMORPGs, I guess I cant comment, as I haven't played many of the new krappenfests. (Alpha) Build Wars, World of Snorecraft, meh. I played Runescape back in the day, when it wasn't so overun with n00bettes, but yeah, it had the "I'll click on you until you die, bitch" thing. |
:
"Sorry, you're too much of a dumbass. EJECTED!" Anyway, there would still be good ole single player. And yes, they could perhaps do without the whole partitioning thing. There would still have to be some boundaries for enemies, though. I mean, you wouldn't want a pack of Balverines tearing through Oakvale, munching on people and attacking you while you have your armor off to show off your tattoos. ..... for example. |
I used to play Diablo 2 LoD about three years ago a lot. Then I played Star Wars Galaxies about a year and a half ago. However, SWG I never really got into it for some reason. It may have been that my computer was crap for playing it at the time but I just never had the time during the school year with all the commitments I had that made me running around all the time from one place to another.
|
That's all fine and dandy, Al, but this is a thread discussing how MMO's should change and innovate, not which ones you play. As a mod, you should know not to respond to a thread by it's title... :nonono:
:p Anyway, as for dealing with idiots, I personally would make it impossible to have a name start in lower-case, or have numbers mixed with letters in the same word, aside from things like '12th' and '1st'. I'd also make it so that a character wouldn't be shown by his/her name floating above his/her head, but rather through chatting and looks. This would require a very extensive character customization system, but making a character is one of the most fun things about RPG's, so why not have it? |
Here's the answer to all your dreams, prayers, and general desires:
www.eve-online.com Won more awards than you can shake a stick at, along the lines of best graphics, most original, best mmo, etc. It also holds the record for most people on one server. It's not turn based, and although you tell your ship what to do and it goes and does it, it works like a starship commander style thing, and basically you win fights by the strategies you employ, the ship setups you use, and the skills you have. You have complete control over what goes on. The universe is conquerable, destructable, and vast (the game map is the size of a small galaxy). You can take over or even build stations, outposts, etc. and there's an ever increasing range of ships, weapons, gadgets, and careers to choose from. Anything from a covert ops stealth ship, to a heavy missile anti-battleship bountyhunter vessel. You can go hunt NPC pirates, work for agents, join a corporation, form a corporation, or just go mining... it's totally up to you. Since playing it, I've honestly never found a reason to play any other game. It ticks every box with me. All other MMOs just suck compared. Especially in terms of how mature, organised, and well developed they are. Eve is really -advanced- for a game. Some people have said it's more like having a second life. Wars are fought and won there, massive empires are built and destroyed... it really is like nothing else. If you seriously want a great MMO in your life, try eve. Just, try it. |
Yes, I have heard of this eve. From what I've heard and seen, it sounds awsome, but I've also heard that hardly anyone plays it. So it's basically you just doing the activities provided.
|
:
I dunno where you heard that, but it's inherantly wrong. Nearly every single item in game (ships to equipment) has been manufactured by someone somewhere in game. So if there was barely anyone, then there would be no items of any kind, and the game would be impossible to play. There's actually usually about 8-10 thousand players online at the same time. Eve sets the world record for the most players on one server and in the same persistant world at the same time, which is about 13.5k players. And there are no "activities provided", you make your own way in eve. You conquer the universe and carve your own destiny by yourself. There's no levels, there's no "experience", there's no endgame. It's not finite like some other games. |
Well, I heard it on Xplay. But like I said in the Hot Coffee thread, half of what they say is pure propaganda. *smites self*
Is there any way I can download this? It sounds pretty cool from the way you've described it. EDIT: *smites self for not reading previous posts* I shall possibly consider creating an account tomorrow. |
:
I'll upload some screenshots of the game later for you guys to stare in amazement at. |
Oi, I don't know. 14 Mazuma, sounds a little bit pricey. I've been well trained in the art of Parental Mooching, I will see if I can use my talents for this.
|
Here's a few of my screenshots, just until Dino gets his up.
The first is just a picture of my EVE-mail inbox. http://oddworldforums.net/attachment...tid=3571&stc=1 Next, my hauler ship. The Iteron Mark 2. I've been using this ship quite a lot lately, mainly because my corporation have stationed me about 17 jumps away from my old location So I've had to bring all my equipment and ships to the new station. http://oddworldforums.net/attachment...tid=3572&stc=1 Finally, a pretty picture of my Iteron warping :). http://oddworldforums.net/attachment...tid=3573&stc=1 I'll show you my other 3 ships when I've finished hauling this stuff. I'll probably be a while :). |
Damn, now my desire for Eve has just gone up quite a lot.
|
1. A rather nice Succubus faction frigate (Sansha's Nation pirate ship).
2. Zoomed out view of the station, it's moon and the moon's planet. 3. The station, with planets behind and in the distance. 4. Flying around outside the station in a Vigil frigate. 5. A thorax cruiser, and some random open windows. http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...tid=3578&stc=1 http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...tid=3577&stc=1 http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...tid=3576&stc=1 http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...tid=3575&stc=1http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...tid=3574&stc=1 |
A couple screenshots of the galaxy map.
Each one of those dots represents one solar system. The ones that are coloured yellow represent the solar systems that have space stations. From the side: http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...tid=3580&stc=1 And from the front: http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...tid=3579&stc=1 |
Holy crap, I thought Eve was some sort of 'omg phantasii' MMO. Now <3.
I will look into it. |
That looks very good. Definitely a 7 or higher on the rate of pants creaming. :p
|
I'll stick up some more screenshots later. At the moment, CCP (the developers) are installing a new patch so I won't be able to post any more until about 4pm at the earliest.
|
:
I'll get some more ship pictures up here later. I'll reduce the picture size so they don't take up so much bandwidth. |
I recently had a run in with the Amarr Empire Customs Officals. I pressed enter to switch to Fullview but at the same time a contraband message came up so the Amarr thought I had refused to hand over the 'Small Arms' and 'Plutonium' (both of which are illegal items in Amarr space). So this happened,
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y11.../destroyed.jpg Now I'm stuck with no Iteron and all my cargo vaporised. :( Here's a copy of the killmail I got... ------------------------------- 2005.09.12 13:54:00 Victim: Godlesswanderer Alliance: Unbrella Alliance Corporation: Digital Mercenaries Inc. You don't have to pay anything if they've confiscated your stuff and shot your ship to pieces.
But that cargo was still really worthless. The most expensive thing was the iteron and even that isn't worth much. What's worse is losing a 27 million isk battlecruiser and 5 million isk worth of equipment because of lag. Even when you've boosted the armour hitpoints to 4.5k it still doesn't take long when you're fighting guristas goons in low sec space. Thankfully that's only happened to me once, but you shouldn't be so hung up about losing so little. |
