Metal Music
I wanted to share my favourite groups with you... so here I go:
Here is the first featured group: http://main.megatherion.com/get.ojpg?photoid=47&f=1 Therion is one of the few groups left that dare creating their own sound and that succeeds quite well with it. They started with a Heavy Doom Ambiance, and evolved to an unique Symphonic Orchestral Metal sound. Their lyrics are some of the most in depth to this day, including tons of references to mythology, occultism, ledgends, mythes and so on, and all of it is accurate. you can visit their site over here: http://www.megatherion.com my reccomendation to start with is Secret of the Runes |
Ah, now this is my sort of thread. What sorts of metal are you mainly into Xav?
|
Female Voice Metal, Symphonic Metal, Orchestral Metal, Gothic Metal, Power Metal, Doom Metal, Epic Metal, Dark Metal, Black Metal, Death Metal (a bit less), and some regular metal too...
that's about it I think |
Ah that's grand, i think womens voices do wonders for metal. As i find that male vocals can be a bit dull and monotonus. Not that i have anything against the majority of the male vocalists.
Though i'd probably say the opposite if nearly every band had a female vocalist, as i'm sure i'd get bored of them too. |
So what bands do you like then? Guessing you've got a lot of Florida metal. If you don't, do.
|
I don't know Florida metal, what's it like?
anyway I'm a bit disapointed nobody tried Therion out. |
American Head Charge is my "thing" at the moment.
|
I just bought the new Dredg album and god was I let down. I haven't talked to those guys in about three years. I was actually one of the studio musicians on their last album El Cielo (which in my opinion is one of the greatest rock albums ever made which could have something to do with me playing guitar on almost every song:)) but the new one is just cheesetastic. I never thought Gavin would become so damn cheesey. BUT HE DID! All of you must own El Cielo but don't get Catch Without Arms. It just isn't a good representative of their talent.
|
Found this quote on DecoyMusic and thought OANST would be interested. And for the record I was only looking for Dredg info and isn't down with emo/experimental post-rock music. Cranking Heathen right now, so take that.
"Catch Without Arms has enough cheese to make any nacho lover sour cream his pants." |
Yeah. One of the lyrics is "Lets sail away on a ship built from trust." I about crapped my pants when I heard that.
|
This is somewhat on topic.
Allow me to pimp Heathen. They stream 2 of their albums and allow you to download them in mp3 format. This is totally legit and band-sanctioned. Check it out, they are good. |
:
|
then you sould check out another album...
there are only a few that have female opera singers. I'm glad I'm not the only one who knows therion here :D |
Florida metal is fantastic. Those iconic growlings and "arrrggrhs" really grow on you. It also has a bit of hardcore like element to it and can be mind-bendingly technical at times. Like most "extreme" metal it has a lot of blast beats and really crazy leads and bass lines. Florida bands to check out
Death: Get individual Thought Patterns first. Every single member at the time is a phenom at what they do. Hoglan and Digiorgio do some insane things on it. Other bands Morbid Angel:Covenant, Blessed are the Sick, and Domination are crazy. Azagtoth and Sandoval are a tremendos combo. Malevolent Creation: Get Ten Commandments. Multiple Stab Wounds is the ticket price right there. Obituary: Very good band, every release is strong. While I'm at it, if you dug Therion "viking metal" could be just the thing for you. Check out bands like Immortal and Bathory's Twilight of the Gods trilogy, you'll flip over them. |

Morbid Angel? Death? Obituary? I am sorry and I really don't mean any disrespect but not only did these bands choose the dumbest names available in the english language but THEY SUCK. A huge misconception that a lot of people have is that if a band knows how to play their instruments really well then they must be good. This could not be farther from the truth. What is the point of having talent if you squander it on meaningless drivel and pure unadalterated stupidity? Screaming about how angry you are is not only a defeatist attitude but it is extraordinarily ignorant.
|
I like system of a down. What is your favorite System of a down song?
|
ahh, metal... gotta love it. My favorite groups are Odd Project, and Six Feet Under. But Odd Project is a mix of emo, metal, and rock.
|
I dig Wagner.
|
:
Thank you for opening everybody's eyes. :
Oh wait, we don't have a rock board... Either way, System of a Down aren't metal. Bloody brilliant band though. |
They don't suck. And knowing how to play your instrument, being it your voice or your gear, goes a long way to making your group NOT SUCK. Oh, and considering the subject matter the names are appropriate. If you listened to them and said, "Hey, this just isn't my thing." fine. But if you just slagged and dismissed something that other people here might enjoy out of spite without out knowing thing ****ing one out of them thats pretty small and immature of you.
How is talking about anger, past religions and cultures, and literature ignorant? Nobody said that I can only like something if it has uplifting, happy themes that edify my life. If I wanted poetry, I'd listen to poetry. I'f I wanted something that would make me rethink my life I'd go down to the library and plop myself in the Philsophy section. If I wanted someone to rip my head off with a solo I'd listen to the metal bands I suggested. What about Bathory and Immortal? Surely they suck because the playing is tight and the names aren't very moving. |
:
and I must say...agreed! :p |
I'm more into the melodic kind of Metal.
Does anybody knows Lacrimosa? http://www.lacrimosa.de/img/splashmetal.jpg It's a wonderfull crossing between Metal and Classic music. Sounds weird? I can assure you the result is absolutly amazing! The guy is auto-producing himself because no one dared to produce such a unique and special kind of music 15 years ago, and he is still carrying on. The lyrics are grey poetry and in a wonderfull Gothic feel. site: http://www.lacrimosa.de/ my advise to start with: Echoes |
I've heard of them, but I've never looked into them or listened to 'em.
|
Metal? Nah...
To each his own, but I just can't appreciate it. I'm afraid I'll have to agree with OANST's views. |
Metal doesn't do much for me. Sure, I'll causually listen to something like Metallica or Iron Maiden, but it's nothing I get really into. Now smite me as I go listen to some more ska. Nyah.
One last closing thought is that there's like, too many sub genres of metal. All of these terms being thrown around... it gets confusing for the ignorant, like myself. Makes me suspect you people just love pulling out random works out of your ass to describe a band's specific brand of music. I mean honestly, you can only go so far into genre classification before it becomes ridiculous:p |
Too true. But every sub-genre of a sub genre has its own little quirks.
Nobody would confuse Hair/Glam, NWOBHM, East Coast thrash or Gothendeath with one another if they listened to them. But it does get a little silly at times. |
it's because there are tons and tons of subtilities in metal ;)
way more then in rap or in Hip hop or R*B |
Static: I have listened to these bands. I have a friend that is into the darkest metal ever made. He knows how I feel about it and we are still friends. I said I didn't mean any disrespect and I meant that. We were discussing metal and so I put in my two cents. I have listened extensively to Morbid Angel and I have to say that not a single original or interesting word is uttered on any of their albums. There is nothing wrong with being angry and saying it per say but there is something wrong with stupid, thoughtless anger which is all these bands are. They are angry because it is what their fans expect of them or becuase they are too moronic to coexist in society the way it is and they feel their anger truly sets them apart. It doesn't. 99 percent of a functioning adults life is spent in desperation but the ability to plow our way through it is what sets apart the men from the boys. On the bright side if I'm ever in the mood to throw kittens in a river I know which music to set it to. I do understand if that makes you upset but please don't think that I think less of you for liking this as I would hope you don't think less of me for not liking it. Facsimile: Your sarcasm is duly noted. In the future if you don't agree with something I say-tell me. Making comments about how I've opened everyones eyes isn't helpfull. Especially since that wasn't what I was going for.
|
Its not about originality, its about a high degree of playing and each bands sound. I admire the bands a lot for their dedication. They take the time to really, really, learn how to play their instruments and give you amazing shows. Like I've said before, its not something to get into because of the message or the lyrics. I am the first to admit that. But I think it sounds amazing. Maybe I'm overvaluing playing and writing and you're overvaluing "originality." I'm glad you at least gave it a chance, and I'm sorry if I sounded excessivly on edge in my last few posts. Its just something I really enjoy.
