A big change.
Don't you think that Oddworld games have changed from dark and scary, to light and happy?
Abe's Oddysee was pretty scary the first time you play it and even in the good ending it is still dark and scary. Though take Munches Oddysee for example, its just a bit to light and happy even in the bad ending. And the bad ending is more funny than sad. Whats your thoughts? |
I agree. The darkness and mystery of Abe's Oddysee has been absent from every game since, and pretty much diluted further in every game since. That said, I thought the bad ending for Munch's Oddysee was brilliantly dark, in particular the final sequence in the Pit.
Stranger's Wrath, while not exactly darker than Munch's Oddysee, takes itself a lot more seriously, which I for one am highly grateful for. |
Realy? I reackond it was funny.
But OW should make it Dark and Scary again. I think the reason it was scary was the way they presented Molluck, compare that to the Glukkons at the auction. |
I kind of agree on that. AO was the best game ever. Evryone was presented well, and they stuck to their character. But in MO, all the mudokons changed from Mysterious, and spiritual, to lazy and dumb. I really hated that. The glukkons changed from dark and scary to, stupid, confused and slightly goofy. But not as exaggerated as Lulu...

I do think that Stranger was fairly dark. He certainly had a lot of baggage and we had a nice intimidating (and mysterious) bad-guy once again. Too bad it was so easy to kill him
I'd like to think that Munch was a blip on the light-meter rather than a permanent change in style. |
Yup thats true, Abe's oddysee was dark; Abe's exoddus was dark yet with a bit more funny things to note on, instead of scary things and Munch's oddysee switched from dark to funny.
Stranger indeed is a bit dark, but thats becouse it is 3d, it's hard to make things dark in 3d without make it look like horror. I think the games also lost hardness within them: I never finished abe's oddysee before i finished abe's exoddus, not to speak about munch. they did a better job with stranger, so i took about 3 weeks to play it at first. |
I don't think it's any harder to make things dark in 3D. It is the story that dictates that aspect. Not to say that the sound and visuals don't play a big part as well, I find it hard to believe that they couldn't have altered a few things to make MO darker.

I guess OWI was more aiming towards the kids...
that's why it's less dark and more cartoony. |
errhm.. wasn't abe's oddysee directed to children or was i born a little gothic
|
Yea, i started playing Ao when i was.... 8-9 years or so... don't remember though... But i was young, and i loved the style, but i only got to paramonia, after that it took me about 3 years to get past it, and yet another month to get past Scrabania....
|
"wasn't abe's oddysee directed to children"
Well, kinda. But you gotta remember games were different then. The most 'adult' thing out there was the shitty top-down GTA. But nowadays, with games like Manhunt, and Silent Hill, and ...various other violent games: They could have produced an adult game with no problem, instead, they made Munchs Oddysee. (^^^Also the problem of the game cube: about 16 adult games out of....77 Game cube games ever made :-P) And BEFORE someone says "GameCube has way more than 77 games"; I was talking the piss out of GCs un-popularity |
If I rememberd, Lorne saying that he wanted to bring MO more to japanese aduance and saying that they pefer lighter games than the darker ones.
Yeah Abe's Oddysee was dark, AE wasn't as dark but was still dark. Even sligs were more scary in AO. |
They do!?
He obviously hasnt played Final Fantasy Or seen any good Anime... |
Stupid fastly crying japanese children(no offence LoL:D)... probably final fantasy is absolutely forbidden to have there, if you are under 18.
PS: i saw a slig walking backwards in AO when i walked into him, probably a bug, cuz when i passed him, he said: what, instead of shooting |
AO = good dark, but could be darker. AE = even less so. MO = 'Mina san! Kite, kite! *fart*' styled humor. SW = Traveling the good ol' path of darkness, but still isn't on the verge of oblivion.
Honestly here, we need more dark games. Seriously, games that aren't 'OMG ZOMBIE YUS DARK LOL' dark. We need phreeeky shit. The sleep prevention stuff. :
|
If Oddworld games were for children, why are they M15+ (even though I started playing it when I was 6).
|
OW games are getting easier and less dark, when i first played AO (i was young) i was scared of abes face in the begining screen, im not sure what audience OW games are for........
p.s lorne lanning closed owi if u didnt know |
WHAT?!?! I DON"T BELIVE YOU!!!
|
:
For the love of god, don't start up another "Oddworld is leik totally ovar!!!111one" scare... |
I knew it wasn't true.
Isn't the movie about the Quintology? |
The only thing we know is that the movie has something to do with Abe ;)
|
There are plenty of threads that discuss that. Go there and don't fill this one with off-topic spamalot.

The problem with Munch is that the difficulty is inconsistent. Many levels are way too easy but there are some that are nigh on impossible (eg the first one in the return to Vykker's Lab where Munch has to make that huge jump and kill all the Vykkers with huge axes, or the intro to Flub Fuels where Abe has to jump from island to island). But on the whole I was pretty satisfied with Munch, difficultywise. |
That is sooo true! Those are the fun parts of MO.
And i guess the quicksaves in AE indeed made it a lot easier, but i think the bookmark points in AO 'were just another type of puzzleing. |

Anyway Lorne said some time ago the movies will definatively be darker then the games. I suspect oddworld to want to be among the first to do some Strong CG, I mean not the childish ones we see all the time now. |
