Oddworld...a cult classic?

I have failed to be here for quite some time, so if there's already a thread on this, I offer my appologies. Anyway.

In a recent issue of, I believe, EGM magazine, they featured a list of the Top Ten Cult Classics of Gaming, defining a cult classic as, "A game that overachieves in the critic's minds, yet underpreforms in the mainstream."

In other words, a game that everyone agreed was totally awesome, but (almost) nobody played because it got buried in the hype of Behead Tournament 4, shall we say.

But all chit-chat and banter aside, it seems that Oddworld (Abe's oddysee, to be specific) ranks at #10 on the list.

Any thoughts?

Well, I've believed Oddworld had a cult-esque following and mythos from the minute I touched the forums, but in those terms, I absolutely agree.
Everyone who I've asked has fond memories of one of the Abe games. I rarely come across someone who hasn't heard of Abe and the mudokons - however badly the pronounce the word. :p

I had to give the magazine back, so I don't remember them all. Let's see...Gunstar Heros, NiGHTS, and Ico are all I remember.

i thought Ico would be on there.

I'd say that the series taken as a whole can be cultish but the Abe games were quite successful so I don't know if they individually count.

I'd've thought 'Beyond Good and Evil' would be on there, as well as 'Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy'. I hate the fact these games aren't going to get the sequels that where originally planned for them.

Hate. It. Hard.

Not too surprising, the Abe games were addictive, beautiful and different. And Abe is well known, and anyone I asked had a liking for the games, though I had to use the term 'the wee blue guy that farts' to get any recognition of our skinny blue hero. :p

What?! I thought that Beyond Good and Evil's sequal was underway! I saw a new-look Jade in a magizine a few months ago, honest. Has it been cancelled?

Oooohh!! Really? I didn't know that!! I shall go and check right after i change my moist trousers!!

I guess Mario World 1 is in there too, it's actually the first platformer I think.

After doing a quick check it seems that the BGaE sequel is still merely a rumour. Which is a shame, 'cos if any game is deserving of a sequel, it's that one.

How is that game less than 20 dollars...NEW. Completely beyond me.
But about Oddworld:Oddworld has a real color to it. If Lorne lived in a different time I think that lit. majors would be talking about a "Mudos Mythos."

If Leorne lived in a different time, he'd be ahead of it. Heck, sometimes I think he's already ahead of this one. Bah, whatever.

The guy in charge of BGaE (Michel Ancel) has been put in charge of the King Kong game tie-in with the movie after Peter Jackson saw how amazing BGaE is.

First tidbids released about Kong

The June issue of Playstation Magazine (PSM) has first scoop on the King Kong game that has Michel Ancel leading the project. Peter Jackson personally chose Ancel to create the game based on the upcoming movie, after he had played through Beyond Good & Evil. "Michel Ancel has a great storytelling skill in making you so involved in the game as a player that you actually become emotionally attached to the characters that you're playing." says Jackson.

The game is being developed with an updated version of the engine used in BG&E and Prince of Persia games. The development team at Ubisoft Montpellier has every bit of WETA's conceptual imagery at their disposal. "We've given Ubisoft absolutely unlimited access to every creative aspect of our film production." Jackson says. The magazine article also featured the first image of the game and it's an in-game scene image from Skull Island. The game is set to be released in December and it's going to arrive on every system from GBA to PC.

It might be a bit strange that Ubisoft was chosen to develop the game, when King Kong is a Universal Studios property and publisher Vivendi Universal Games should normally have first crack at it. Maybe Peter Jackson had a clause in his contract that King Kong would have to at least have a chance to be a good game, and at Ancel's hands it has a damn good chance to be one.
