Is oddworld being copied?

A couple of days ago and i was looking around and i came across this this: http://infam.antville.org/static/inf...vil_fuzzle.jpg

Have all of oddworld's creatures been copyrighted or not? :fuzconf:

Abe16 05-05-2005 08:58 PM

Oh...my...god, did they even ask for permisson?

Nath 05-06-2005 03:03 AM

they've called it a fuzzle, but it has feet.

Dipstikk 05-06-2005 04:08 AM

People do the darndest things when they don't have any origonal ideas of their own.

What the hell kind of card game is that, anyway? Don't tell me it's that goddamn Neopets shit.

T-nex 05-06-2005 04:13 AM

Ehm... I've seen fuzzles like these alot of places.. I don't think that enyone's copying anyone...
Just that the name Fuzzle fits on a... a fuzzly fur-ball..... O.o

mudling 05-06-2005 04:38 AM

yeah, i agree. it has a differnet design, just a common name, and that site was made before year 2 thousand, i think, so that design could have been made before munches oddysee.

stingbee 05-06-2005 07:10 AM

how can a fuzzle eat a spaceship. It needs oxygen.

Abe16 05-06-2005 07:19 AM

Well, it's their own creation,(Doubtfully) and it's probably an alien to them. And being an alien they must breath in space.

big bro boogie 05-06-2005 07:29 AM

well, i'd say let them be
but if it aint legal... not a prob for me

General Dripikk 05-06-2005 07:32 AM

Yeah, i've seen stuff like that. I don't think it's actually coping at all.

Oddish 05-06-2005 07:35 AM

You got that right.

Very unoriginal indeed, and what's even more un original is the name "fuzzle". But yeah, fuzzle is a common things funnly enought, I have seen a few fuzzy like little criters in film and TV. I wounder if oddworld inhabitants know about this, if they don't then there might be trouble. It's unlikey that it could just be a coincidence. They just added feet, other than that it's pretty much a fuzzle.

Teal 05-06-2005 09:01 AM

Like someone before said, "fuzzle" isn't exactly the most original of names. I mean, Neopets is supposed to be some cutesy game with huggable fluffikins animals, and it doesn't take a leap of imagination to go from "fuzzy" or "fuzz-ball" to "fuzzle". I mean, another forum I post on (most of whom probably haven't even HEARD of Oddworld uses the word "confuzzled" as part of its forum-lingo (and yes, before anyone asks, *I* suggested the name for the puzzled fuzzle-icon on here that's called "confuzzled", and I can confirm the SB used it before it became an icon name on here. It was too tempting an idea not to doodle it, as I thought it suitable). After all, the Tolkien universe has sligs (which I think are swamp dwellers, or something) and I don't think OWI copied Tolkien or vice versa.

I think it's simply a coincidence. *shrugs* This reaction is a bit like the knee-jerk "OMG U COPYED ME U ART THEEF BLUE DOGS ARE MINE OMG I'M GOING TO COME KILL U WIT AN AX NOW!!!!11! AN NOBODY WILL LIEK YU NEMORE BECOSE YOU PLAGERISED ME!!!one!!" that's rife in the art community. The self-appointed Art Police (aka fanboys) even jump on people for "concept theft" or "style theft" these days. Something inspired OWI to create a fuzzle - is it that unrealistic that someone else could have had the same inspiration? Very little in the world is truly original these days. Sure, it may be inspired by Oddworld - but I'd be more inclined to think it was "stolen" if they had mudokons or glukkons on there.

As an aside, I've heard it said that anything you create is automatically copyright to you - it's just proving it that's the hard bit. And you can't copyright a name; you can trademark it, and if it's unusual enough it's hardly likely a potential plagiarist will get away with the whole "but *I* made that up myself!" if there's a dispute, but you can't copyright names or common words.

It is from neopets, it said on the card. My friend plays it, but it's some trading card game as well I think.

Xavier 05-06-2005 12:43 PM

actually those Fuzzles existed before Munch's Oddysee I believe...
this has allready been discussed

OddAlchemist 05-06-2005 02:41 PM

yea i saw it to on another website i was on. i dont think there copying it just resembles the fur and vicious teeth, and it has green chicken feet.

big bro slig #1 05-06-2005 02:48 PM

Well don't you think it's a little suspisous that they look almost EXACTLY the same as the original?

It did, Neopets was up in like... 1999 and the fuzzles were one of the first things out.

sligco 05-06-2005 04:31 PM

Coolmanbizkit 05-06-2005 04:33 PM

sligco 05-06-2005 04:34 PM

Neopets' Fuzzles were out way before MO's

big bro slig #1 05-06-2005 05:38 PM

I need somebody to get me proof that the fuzzle was made after 97.

Leto 05-06-2005 06:52 PM

At first the neopets 'fuzzles' were called Jib Jibs, so shut yer yaps.

And I mean, c'mon, it's a frickin' ball of hair with eyes. I see no one is defending the Tribbles, eh? Who ripped off them?

:nonono:

sligco 05-06-2005 09:37 PM

jib jibs are now jub jubs and fuzzle ar petpets or watever

Leto 05-06-2005 09:41 PM

But they were origionally actual pets, along with the Macy Grays.

God, it was actually worth going there once.

sligco 05-06-2005 09:41 PM

i dunno i still use the boards

the fuzzles were among the last creatures designed in MO... and in 97 OWI was working on AE (it came out the 23rd November 1998)

Androideka 05-07-2005 07:43 AM

I can't be sure but I thought fuzzles started out as petpets... still.... I think OWI had them at first. I remember reading it on a billboard LCD screen in Abes Exoddus

OddAlchemist 05-07-2005 11:36 AM

why would neopets want to try and copy Fuzzles anyway. ints just a simple name for a simple fuzz thing. just a coincidence there the same.
