Are Interns the juvenile form of Vykkers?
In the Oddworld art book amongst the Munch's Oddysee concept art, there's a little sketch that shows an Intern metamorphosing into a Vykker, with the caption "Interns evolve into Vykkers". Was that idea abandoned, or is that the accepted life cycle for those creatures? I know there are a LOT of physical differences between the two, but no more than the differences between a caterpillar and a butterfly. If they are the larva and adult of the same species, it would explain the Interns' name, as an Intern is a doctor who's still in training before full professional acceptance. It would also explain why these creatures are compliant to the Vykkers, as they're working their way up the totem poll to replace them.
While I'm talking about Interns, is there a purpose to their mouths being stapled shut? Are Interns notorious biters if left unaltered? I'm also very curious as to how an Intern's vertical slit mouth operates, and I wonder how they get their nutrition after the staples are put in. I may send these questions to Alf once he appears to be in operation again, but for the moment I'll welcome some intelligent fan speculation. |
I think that you may have something here. In fact, when I first played MO, I couldn't tell Vykkers and Interns apart.
|
Before I owned MO, I thought they were the same, just different rank.

interns have their mouthes sone together becuase they like to sing too much. all i know is that interns and vykers both envolved from the monkey-like creatures who stayed high up in the trees.
your point could explain why the interns don't escape though. |
it was a concept.
nobody knows if Lorne decided if it was oddworldish enough to be actually be a part of the Odd World we are only sure they tought about it :p |
A good observation, and an interesting thesis. It would explain a few things about them. I especially like the part about it explaining why Interns are called Interns, because I don't like it as a species name. For me, it ranks down there with Outlaws.

With the Intern>>>Vykker thing, I think it just meant that the Vykker model could be altered and used for the Interns, but I could be wrong.
|
Well, could be, but I don't think so. First of all, Vykkers have 3 legs, and Interns only have two. Also, while both have "tall" heads, they are very different structurally. The interns are somewhate triangular and have the eyes on top of their heads. Vykkers look like they're storing a huge brain (having a sort of egghead effect) and the eyes are in the "normal" place.
But in the art book, it does say that Vykkers just keep preserving themselves, and that's why they're all pale and have liver spots and stuff. I'm guessing for a Vykker, some plasctic surgery wouldn't be out of the question. So who knows? |
Yes, I understand the differences in limb number and head shape, etc. However, if you look at page 180 of the Oddworld art book, it shows a simple sketch of the Intern's head and limbs changing until it becomes a Vykker. It's a tiny sketch, I know...

This makes me wonder..........

*Phones for the Men-In-White.* Interesting concept. That would explain their names very nicely, which I also hate as much as Max does. |
