Oddworld: Movies or Video Games?
If you could make the decision, would you rather see Oddworld's next project as a full-length movie or another video game? I'm not talking about any specific characters or stories, just whether you'd enjoy another game or a CG movie more.
Personally, while I love the video games to death, I'm most of all a fan of the stories and characters, and would like to see an Oddworld film. This would introduce a whole new spectrum of people to Oddworld's message and storytelling craft, as well as flesh out the characters and scenarios much more. Plus, a successful animated movie (which, considering their level of artistry, it would be guaranteed to be) would be sure to have lots of merchandising, i.e. we could finally get our hands on some action figures. What do you think? |
I would definitly go to the movies to see AO and the behind the seens when you get to contol Abe. But then again, a new game would be awesome, hmmm, let's see, yeah I'd rather see an Oddworld movie.
|
I think most people who chose an Oddworld movie, aren't actually interested in the Oddworld games at all, meaning ANY of them. The way I see it, they're only in it for the story, and I can understand that; it's a very deep reason to get the game, IMO. However, I loved Stranger's Wrath and I enjoyed playing it. I enjoyed it so much, because the gameplay was almost flawless and really addicting. I would love nothing more than another game with the same addictive gameplay and the story comes second for me. Granted, I know I'll get both in a game, but a movie is not something I can play, so it just doesn't do it for me, as I am a gamer first and a movie goer second... or even 5th, whatever.
|
The stories, problems, personalities of the characters, and the depth of the games are the only reason why I play the games...while i love the cg clips, i still like for my fingers to have something to do...so games ^_^ But id still go see an oddworld movie :D

Putting down generalizations is a bad thing. |
Yeah, I thought that it was common sense that I meant "most people." I guess we're still not past that time yet. Well, here you go, "most people." Happy?
It's logical is all I'm saying. Would not you also believe so? I mean, who would want a movie more than a game? Someone who loves the stories more than the games. It's like point and click games. Do you think people actually enjoy playing those types of games? It's the story that pulls them in. I thought this was common knowledge. |
If it is common knowledge, then it's flawed.
I really enjoyed the gameplay in the first games and SW, the best video gaming experiences I've ever had. But I want to see Oddworld expand into a different area of digital art and make a movie. Most people have a balance between not-interactivity and interactivity, and when they have too much of one they want to see another. I know it's not very clear, but I'll try to give an example. In OSW, I liked the gameplay more than I did the story (although that was intriguing too). However, maybe I want to see the story expanded upon, new characters introduced, old characters brought to life, so on and so forth. I mean, did you honestly find the opening video excruciatingly boring? I could definetly stand an hour or so of that, even if I'd usually rather be shooting stuff. I don't know if you understand what I'm saying, I admit it's not the clearest argument, but that's what I have to say. |
OW movie? na...not for me, I think it just works better as a videogame, I'm afraid a movie might just become a bit too much about the humor (which is a bit too abused in the videogames IMO) and really make me bored, I mean yeah there's good story, but I feel like if I wanted a movie of OW it'd have to have more serious dialogue than the games do...and I dont see that happening :p

Yeah, your argument does make sense. I guess you're right. I just think a few hours of well-made Oddworld cinema would be like heaven.
|
I see what you mean. I mean, if you've pretty much got the gist of the Oddworld series, but just want to know more about the characters and stories in general, a CG movie could be a very welcome edition :)
|
They should make both, because I just can't decide which I would prefer...A movie would be cool, and another game would be just as cool...
|
I really don't know how to answer this. It's the same predicament I faced when Advent Children was announced, movie or game? *dreams about Sephiroth again*
On one hand a movie would be absolutely amazing. We all know what high quality CG OWI is able to produce, and I always have said that the quality of their FMVs exceeds that of many of the "popular" CG film studios which tend to always have that more rubbery look to their CG, OWI have a more realistic look to theirs. And based on how I went to see FF:TSW in the cinemas 16 times, I am sure that I would be doing the same, if not more when it comes to an Oddworld movie. But on the other hand, I am much more of a video game player than a movie watcher. I really don't watch too many movies at all. Well actually I don't play lots of games either, but if I had to generally choose between one form of entertainment to the other, I would choose playing a game over watching a movie. So adding another Oddworld game to the series would also be something to look forward to. Abe Babe... |
i just love interacting in the games and just playing them. i love the movies but you get movies in the games and i guess i like it better that way. imagine if they made games based off oddworld games, they wouldn't be as deep and good.
|
I want Oddworld games, but it would be nice for Oddworld to enter the CG films too, as it would be nice to have a CG film not aimed at a younger auidence first.
But games first, they give you more freedom games such as letting the player chose their own path and then trying something else (the good and bad ending) and each would bring a different experience to each player depending on their stlye of play. Games are the future entertainment, films would not be able to them, they will be absorb into them or maybe not. WHEN IS ADVENT CHILDREN COMING OUT, on a different note I want a FF film to show the world that Square does have some really great stories and characters and also to wash away FF:Spirit Within... |
Both please! :D

I would like to see an Oddworld movie. Weren't they supposed to be making one?
|
I'd rather have another video game. You get the story and the game so I think its a better way to go. Plus a most movies are about 2 hours, most video games are 10-12.
|
This is a difficult choice to make. The video games are amazing and bring originality into gaming with both gameplay and characters, but a movie would be great as well mainly because of the interesting stories that OWI develop. I guess I would have to say both! :D
|
both... definatly
I have the feeling that's possible |
:
|
then it's probably a game
but it's hard to choose |
A Game you would get hours of fun with, but a movie, we already know what happens if it's one in the series, but with the way Fangus is going, I think I better choose movie.

I am interested in the Oddworld games. I've enjoyed every single one of them; the first two moreso than any other game I have ever played. I am in mainly for the story, but not JUST the story, especially when I first started playing However, I always have been and always will love movies more than I love games. And we all know how good an Oddworld movie could potentially be. I would love to see some Oddworld short films, like how Pixar do short films. They'd be great while they still concentrated on games. |
:
and two music videos, too! But yeah, it's really different to see oddworld shortfilms and other stuff in big screen than in some mediaplayer in computer. |
Yes, those sort of films. However, ones with tiny little storylines would be even cooler.
Anyone remember that pixar shortfilm with the old man who plays chess with himself? |
Pixar does realluy cute and funny short films. It would be funny to see Alf struggling to get tea while doing hundreds of other things.
|
Well, since I really can't pick both, (like I'd really want to! :p) then I guess I will go with movies because I just think that it would be interesting to see Oddworld on the big screen. :)
|
I think that if oddworld for any reason would lose its position as a great gaming company, they will be a great asset for the movie industrie. They will bounce Pixar of their leading 3D animation position like its nothing. I would love to see a movie about oddworld in the traditional oddworld quality. A movie I say!
But untill Lorne can finaly get that to happan (and we all know we are not the only one's who want a movie, Lorne has been wanting it more then all of us combined) we will have to stick with the games. A movie will be made... some day. Mark my words... one day! One day I say!!! *Gets carried away my men in white jackets* One day!!! |
