Best and Worst Novel
Seeing as there is a best and worst movie thread I thought I'd start a best and worst book thread. My fav novels are: Starship Troopers, Catch-22, Jurassic Park and Raptor Red. I don't really have a book that I hate.
|
Best: Dan Brown - Angels and Demons.
Worst: tied Philip Pullman - Amber Spyglass vs anything in the Harry Potter series. |
Whats Angels and Demons about?
|
My fav is the Harry Potter and don't know any novel's that sucked because I usely stop reading them if they suck.
|
I also don't really have any 'worst' novels..but some of my faves:
Matilda - Roald Dahl (ok it's a kids' book but not really! lol) Confesssions of a Shopahoilc (nice light reading) The Professor's House - Willa Cather Red Dragon |
i liked reading The lord of the rings, alot. The worst are probably those we have to read in school. They always choose the boring ones :(
|
I usually stpped reading the C.S. Lewis ones, I liked The lord of the rings and harry potter.
|
Fav - Dune/ 1984
Least fav - I'm very picky. I hate a lot of books. |
Some of my favorites are The River Why, 1984, A Clockwork Orange, and uhm . . . The Amber Spyglass. Oh, and anything by Christopher Moore (Lamb, Coyote Blue, Island of the Sequined Love Nun, et cetera). The River Why is the best.
Probably the worst book I ever read was Slaughterhouse 5. I know it's a classic, but really, I hated that book. Maybe someday I'll read it again and try to figure out what I missed. There must have been something meaningful in that book to make it such a classic, but apparently I overlooked it. |
Favorite - Lord of the rings, American Gods, The great and secret show (or something like that) and Ender's Game.
Least favorite - Some weird dragon book. Mostly about violence and naked women, which is just sad. And some other fantasy book, but I must have missed what made it fantasy. I read 30 pages and all I got to know was that the chef was drunk. |
The best AND worst novel according to me is "Bible Code II The Countdown" by Michael Drosnin, were he explains have found crypted codes in the Holy Bible in some way, codes like "twin", "tower", "Bush","nuclear war" and "2006" along with "end of days". Perhaps its mumbo jumbo, but the Bible Code has forseen Arafat's death, the differens was though, according to the Bible Code he was shot, in present time, he died by disease. It has also forseen Clintons denyal and the war on Iran. It's a little creepy, believe me.
I'm still reading it, I'll tell ya how it ends:-) |
I hate the way the harry potter movies ###### up the books now there are hundreds of harry potter haters thanks to thoughs overated movies.
|
I also love Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs.
|
I recently read a novel trilogy about 700 pages a piece (my gawd), called The Wayfarer Redemption.
The trilogy is based in medieval times. It follows the story of Axis, a military Battleaxe, which is the equivilent of a general, and Faraday, a woman who is to be married to Duke *I forget his name.... let's call him Bob.* It's a rather complicated book, spanning over years of different events. .... it's very complicated, and it would take me well over an hour to summarize it. Anyway, it's a very good series, and I highly recommend it. the first book in the series is called The Wayfarer Redemption then Enchanter then Starman as I said, they are very, very good books, but may take a while to complete, due to their length. They are written by Sara Douglas |
I've heard of some of Sarah Douglas' books. Sounds good, I might read that when I've finished the book I'm reading now.
|
And now, for some kick-awesomeness novels: Lord of the Rings, Catch-22, To Kill a Mockingbird.
|
Harry Potter used to be great until the movie came out and they made these wonderfully crappy toys.
Harry Potter sucks now! |
:
I LOVE Edgar Allen Poe, I have his complete works, his stories are so very creepy (much more so on paper than on film). |
I also love H.P Lovecrafts books. His best story (I think) is The Shadow Over Innsmouth, very creepy.
|
Best: Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas.
The Ratmans Notebook. Worst: Harry frickin' Potter. |
Dino, I know what Angels and Devils is now. My friend lent it to me today and what I've read so far is great!
|
I too, like the LOTR books.
But there's another serie I really like. I believe it's called the Sword of Truth, a series consisting of (now)10 books, of which I have read the first 7, not counting the prequel (see here: http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/au...y_Goodkind.htm ). Unfortunately, the latest two books aren't available in The Netherlands. Yet... |
I like the Chris Ryan Alpha Team books, I'm currently reading his book called Hunted
|
OK, my favourite novelist is Benjamin Zephaniah (I'm not sure if you get him in America.) I like Banana Yoshimoto and Haruki Murakami too, especially his 'Behind the masks of the Geisha' book. I love Maya Angelou, although she writes autobiography. I know it's silly, but reading 'I know why the caged bird sings' brought tears to my eyes. Her books are amazingly inspirational.

Davinci Code is cool too. I'm in the middle of Digital Fortress at the moment, which is a very cool book that plays out like an episode of 24... an awesome read indeed. |
Best-Anything from H.P. Lovecraft or Steven King.
Worst-Harry Potter books (didn't read them, I think it's the fandom that bugs me). |
Favorites
Dune-Frank Herbert A Wizard of Earthsea-Ursula LeGuine Brave New World-Aldous Huxley The Gunslinger-Stephen King Baddies Anything written by Clive Barker The Dune prequels by Herbert's son Anything by Anne Rice The Dark Tower-Stephen King (this was the final book that began with The Gunslinger and was just so godawfull that I felt violated. |
The Dark Tower ass-raped you?

I like Stephen King a lot. Even if the plot isn't interesting...or just plain stupid, I still like his way to create characters. It's kinda hard to explain...but sad thing is that Stephen King has a tendency to ruin his books at the last few pages, it looks just like he has no heart to write the ending. But I still like The Dark Tower series, even if a lot of people think it's crap :)
I also like "Pan Tadeusz" (Mister Tadeusz) by Adam Mickiewicz, "Narrenturm" by Andrzej Sapkowski, "Mistrz i Malgorzata" (Master and Malgorzata) by Michal Bulhakow and some other books that I don't remember at the moment... The worst thing I had to read probably was "W pustyni i w puszczy" by Henryk Sienkiewicz....how much I suffered from pure boredom when reading every single page...sadly, I had to do this...for school, for school........ |
