28,317 Copies of OSW sold?

:

On a completely different note, it's also worth noting that the exclusive Xbox game, Oddworld Stranger's Wrath, which scored well (8.8 on xbox.ign.com) and grabbed an average media score of 8.8, didn't rent or sell well, with 28,317 units sold all told.
http://xbox.ign.com/articles/589/589751p1.html

If only they marketed teh game earlier.

Cyber-Slig 03-05-2005 03:03 AM

This doesn't surprise me. Oddworld is not a big game. Very few actually know of it's existence. Only 'cos OWI is a small company.

_GrubHunter_ 03-05-2005 03:23 AM

Not good :/

I disagree. In my experience, the majority of people who actually buy games (even rarely) know what Oddworld is. Even if all they know is that it's about Abe and "Mudekens".

OANST 03-05-2005 06:59 AM

This game was so poorly marketed that I'm not surprised. Not a single commercial! This game is twice as good as MO and they ate up the airwaves for that game. This does not bode well for OI. I hope they pull out of this okay.

Wil 03-05-2005 07:17 AM

What? That's ultra poor! That's worse than Munch's Oddysee, although OSW has only been out a month. Hmmm. Well, we the fans can all blame the EA machine for not getting up off their laurels and advertising the game. I'm actaully really surprised, because there hasn't been a single bad review for this game.

Scrubs 03-05-2005 08:44 AM

man what is wrong with people, its a great game, guess they dont know that though.

demos are great for advertising games thats how i discovered AO

Abe16 03-05-2005 08:56 AM

One of my uncles cousiens, i forgot gave me AO and AE, When I first played it Man i was hooked!

MojoMan220 03-05-2005 10:11 AM

That is a damn shame! I am speechless. Either EA sucks at advertising, or OWI kept the game too quiet for too long. If only Microsoft had held onto Oddworld, they might have advertised it as a big contender, instead of just another game in the EA lineup. Stranger may not be in the next game after all. What a dissapointment...

Dualist 03-05-2005 11:08 AM

or OWI kept the game too quiet for too long.

I think that is pretty much what happened sales wise to OSW. I mean you've all seen the advertisements on websites of OSW a week before it was about to ship...I mean the ads were everywhere. But I think it was way to late to start advertising it.

I know Lorne Lanning and OWI didn't want to hype up OSW like they did MO, but I really think they should have. If they did, it wouldn't be overrated, I mean we absloultley love OSW and we've hyped every little piece of information we could get our hands on.

Tis a shame, I wish CREATIVE and ORIGINAL games would sell more than sequels. But that would very unlikely happen.

thatbluebastard 03-05-2005 11:10 AM

it isn't a big loss, if it even IS a loss.

there were no commercial trailers[that i know of] aired on even AMERICAN television.

i think the game will sell more after the initial sales. that seems to be the leitmotif of Oddworld.

Dualist 03-05-2005 11:13 AM

Now I don't know much about economics, but I'm curious if EA will suffer from this loss...or OWI.

Xavier 03-05-2005 11:26 AM

I'm revolted! Are you sure that source is trustable?
that awfully less then what I tought it would sale

*Blames EA USA!!!

IGN.com is very reliable when it comes to sales (Biggest game site out there).

Xavier 03-05-2005 11:39 AM

I hope it will go a lot better in Europe
It has to sell better over here!

thatbluebastard 03-05-2005 11:40 AM

another theory i have is that people don't want intelligent games anymore.

they want Halo and all those other retarded games.

Killing civilians, stealing things, jacking cars. The #1 game sold last year had all of that...can you guess the obvious game?

WineDarkSea 03-05-2005 12:09 PM

I have never been a big fan of EA Games, and this is not helping it out at all. EA is the ones responsible for the advertising and they seriously dropped the ball. They really should have pushed this game. I see EA advertising for all kinds of crap on tv all the time, and I never heard a word about OSW. The worst part is that this is a harder hit of OI than it is for EA.

Cyber-Slig 03-05-2005 12:14 PM

Yeah. It's the infamous, ''Barney takes a stroll down the park'' ;) . But seriously, GTA only gets it's buys from the level of freedon, goriness, and the damn, creepy easter eggs. I've been trying to find them on my cousin's PS2. If oddworld had more freedom around it, it would attract more. Oddworld already has it's fair share of gore (Body bits going flying away guys get chopped up, or depossessed.

Shinjara 03-05-2005 12:24 PM

That's really disappointing.. Perhaps sales over here in Europe will be more promising as Xavier said.

I'd buy OSW, if I had a X-Box :P

Same happened to Beyond Good and Evil, loaded with 'artisticness' and good reviews, and it fell falt on its face. Stranger seems marveous from what I've heard and yet here we go, down the path of 'falling-on-your-face'. It should have been hyped a bit more, I agree, but not to the level of Munch.

I guess general gamers don't want anything where more mental effort than 'will I go here and kill this guy or go there and kill that guy?'

Dark Oddworld 03-05-2005 12:59 PM

Wow thats crap. Im starting to hate EA.

well, Vice City was a pretty hot game if you do all the missions and such.

i'm a fan of Vice City and new wave music, so that game killed me.

but once you get past that, it's boring. Oddworld games are so much better, in all aspects.

they have character, artistic value, and a very involving plot.

i've heard Stranger's Wrath isn't worth buying because it has no 'online play', but these statements seem to be coming from people who don't remember when online console gaming wasn't a convenience. back when there were games like Super Punch-Out!!, Donkey Kong Country, Chrono Trigger, and Super Mario RPG.

i think a great plot combined with fun gameplay is waaay more important than online play.

Alf's Assistant 03-05-2005 01:47 PM

I believe that's units sold for the first week of launch.

The article is misleading.

Oddish 03-05-2005 01:54 PM

Thanks AA.

Now theres nothing to worry about. It's been 6 weeks since the first luanch.

Dualist 03-05-2005 04:50 PM

Since AA corrected me, I will be sending IGN a correction notification.

Cloverfield 03-05-2005 09:08 PM

Ack, I had something typed up, but I didn't see Alf's Assistant's post. I guess I need to edit and delete and all of that.

I did want to say though that over here it's not really got any promotion in the stores [at least where I live anyways]. I haven't seen a single poster or anything for it in my area, which is a shame. Hell, when Abe's Exoddus came out, they had billboards for it. I know, because I own one... erm don't ask.

But if it's selling well then all is good. I still am under the belief that this game appeals to a more broader audience due to the FPS elements.

Abe babe...

Xavier 03-06-2005 12:58 AM

Thanks AA...
anyway I'd like to know how much units are sold to this day in the USA and in Europe

Nate 03-06-2005 04:44 PM

Yeah, Abe Babe, it's really been pathetic here. I mean, it was even impossible to get a release date and it's not even up on ea's local website.

:

Ads and marketing are EA's responsibility, not OWI's.

:

Now I don't know much about economics, but I'm curious if EA will suffer from this loss...or OWI.

EA would take the loss. They paid OWI for the production of the game and they get paid back through sales. OWI probably don't earn any royalties at all until EA breaks even. That would be a fairly standard publishing deal.

Alcar 03-07-2005 04:32 AM

I made a fuss about EA's lack of advertising a while ago, and it looks as if I was correct. 28,317 copies seems rather low, even just for the first week. Hopefully it will rise quicker as word spreads, helping the poor situation with advertising.
