COULD be a PROBLEM

This may be a problem for some of us, Xbox put out an artical today about
unsafe power cords on many boxes. If this is not the right forum will the mods.
please move it to the correct one.

If the link does not work, you know the drill, copy and paste in your browser

It involves some 14 million Xboxes. Could yours be one??

The Xbox is so powerful that burns up. Well I have an Xbox, everything is ok for now.

sligster 02-17-2005 02:18 PM

hm. I've had mine since the 'box came out, no problem yet...

just to be on the safe side, though, I'll order the cables.

This could've saved my life, thx Voodoo Hand!

If you're not in the US, just go to your local xbox website (.com.au/.co.uk/whatever) and follow the links. So nice of Microsoft to worry about their customers dying a horrible flaming death.

Dino 02-18-2005 03:30 AM

Wow, I had no idea about this... I hope my Xbox doesn't go poof too.

I don't think I've seen an Xbox turn gay as of yet, so rest assured, you are safe ;)

As for the more serious topic, I'm amazed, and admittedly, glad that Microsoft have actually taken action. It just seems so out of character, and I doubt the lawsuits they could face from power cord failure are so great that they pose a thread to Microsoft - so why? Kindness? Or the battle to beat the PlayStation? Either way, I'm getting a replacement because I like the way they design stuff :P

Microsoft have always had a good track history making sure Xboxes are safe and working. Back when people were still loudly denouncing a games console by MS, I heard tales of how rapidly repair crews picked up broken Xboxes and fixed and returned them.

I ordered the new cables as soon as I read that they were free.

Mojo 02-18-2005 09:09 AM

Heh, have got my Xbox from the start, so no new cables for me, but when it DID break down, due to overheating, I sent it to the repairing factory, and I got it back in 2 days, with an extra bonus of a free sticker (wow), a CD case, and an Xbox beanie! Talk about service!

You don't want to know where mine's been inserting the controller jack.

MojoMan220 02-22-2005 05:30 PM

Damn. I was under the impression this problem only appeard in recently manufactured Xbox consoles. I was surprised after reading the email they sent me, that this affects only the older ones. I purchased mine a month after it was released, so it's probably in my best interest to uptain these replacement cords. Just finished placing my order, hopefully my Xbox can be salvaged.

Dark Oddworld 02-27-2005 04:06 PM

I think I don't want to play my X-box anymore.....

Godlesswanderer 02-27-2005 04:22 PM

Just placed my order, hopefully it should come within the next week or so. :)

Cloverfield 02-27-2005 07:33 PM

I wonder where this leaves my Xbox. My Xbox was purchased on release, so it is very likely affected by the problem. Although being in Australia, will Microsoft recognize that I have a US Xbox?

How about- heres a radical idea- use different power chords? I have never, once used my Xbox power cord. They are just standard power cords, so when I lost my Xbox one, I just stole the one from my schools printer. Works a charm. Or just buy one from an electrical store- they are pretty darn cheap. I don't want to wait for a week or so for them to send me a cord I already own...

Fuzzle Guy 02-28-2005 11:02 AM

I know about this, and I know someone who's Xbox burst into flames whiles playing Munch (I'm gonna Cry :()

Why would I buy new cords, it's Microsofts problem. My Xbox hasn't burst into flames since I got it years ago so, I'm not worried.

Microsoft are too retarded to understand complex things like that. I got my power cords today, but despite clearly living in the U.K., mine had a Continental plug, so I can't even use it. It was even sent to me from within the U.K.! Morons, or what?

That'll be because a power cord grabbed from any other device is even less safe.

That's actually really…bad reasoning. My house has never burnt to the ground with me inside it, either, but you don't see me throwing away my smoke detector.

Al the Glukkon 02-28-2005 03:05 PM

Got, an E-mail about this. I will probably only use my X-box for Half Life 2.

Abe Babe...

when you order the cord, you put in the serial number thingy on the bottom of the Xbox, which determines if your Xbox is in danger of poofing, or if your Xbox is, indeed, a U.S. model. If your's is a U.S. model, I'm sure they'll send you some.

I literally got mine 2 days after I ordered. THEM MICROSOFTS IS FAST

EDIT: although, what Max's cord situation shows, is that it's not guaranteed to work.

Cloverfield 03-01-2005 05:03 PM

Thanks for the info Sligster! I'll try that. I guess if they won't send a US cord to Australia, I can always get them to ship it to my friend in the US and have them send it to me.

Why use reasoning when I've got all this reckless naiveté at my disposal.

Leto 03-01-2005 08:16 PM

Max, how so would the cables be even less safe? I am positive that all of the Xbox power cables are just salvaged cords from their PC models, you know, to save money. If they did make new ones- that was a pointless waste of several dollars. Ah well.

Futhermore, I shall not be ordering a replacement cable anytime soon. If I haven't experienced any abnormailities at all, I think it is nout to worry about. This whole issue may have been brought up becuase some stupid child left his or her Xbox on for 18 hours, then then exclaimed "Hey, Mum, my Xbox is sort of on, fire.". I'm going to worry about something as petty as this... :-O

Fuzzles! 03-03-2005 07:26 AM

Got a letter in the mail yesterday about this (though I'd already read about it online). Nice that MS actually took the time to mail (snail mail at that) about this. I own 2 Xboxes and one power cord will be replaced, although I am not even using the original Xbox power chord either.

MojoMan220 03-03-2005 01:10 PM

Just got my replacement cord yesterday. It's bigger than the Xbox! It does look pretty neat though.

Cloverfield 03-04-2005 12:26 AM

Well seeing there is no cost involved in obtaining a replacement cord [or is there? I haven't got as far as ordering yet, but it appears to be for free], I really don't see why you wouldn't want to obtain one. I mean if something is free, it's not costing you anything.

It's free, you don't even have to send in the old one, they are just mass replacing them if the console is older than Oct 2003.

And I agree, I'm definitely getting mine!

CarboN 03-04-2005 10:21 AM

Ah, thank you.
I heard these news a while ago, but I forgot to check my xbox. Now I got to know that my xbox was one of these dangerous ones. Eep! Thanksiish. :p

Wil 03-05-2005 07:19 AM

I'm still continuing to play Stranger's Wrath without this cord. If Microsoft are going to be ignorant, I'm going to be belligerent.
