Halo 2 was disappointing...

I've been reading a couple threads in OT, as well as doing a bit of googling on it out of sheer boredom, and I've just been considering all my experiences of Halo 2, between the time I first played it, right up to now, a time when me and my friend make the unstoppable multiplayer team, even 4 v 2.

I feel as though Halo 2 was like one of those very delicious looking sweets that simply disappeared in your mouth. Or like a great idea with a lot of potential, that ended up as a great game with too much unexplored potential. The game was good, a much needed improvement on Halo 1, but it always felt like it hadn't been taken far enough. It was too linear almost, even with all the new attacks that bungie added - there still wasn't enough to do.

There are a number of things that, when you think about them, really don't make sense at all. For instance, the only replayability of Halo 2 is in the multiplayer, since the singleplayer gameplay is too linear and not open ended enough. Multiplayer however, has been highly disregarded and ill-considered - a lack of customizable options plagues the setups, also you can only choose the covenant elite and the human Spartan cyborg. There are many other things which demonstrate the lack of imagination within bungie (or the abundance of inspiration killing time constraints), but none so glaringly obvious as the lack of multiplayer maps, and the total lack of decent multiplayer maps.

It is only now that I notice an unfortunate similarity between Halo 1 and Halo 2; When Halo 1 first came out, most of us were expecting it to be really good, and we weren't even considering the possibility of a sequal... but then, much as we liked it, we had to admit that it really wasn't good enough, and so we began looking forward to Halo 2. When Halo 2 came around, we felt just as we did when Halo 1 came out, we were full of optimism, and we thought this would be the good one - but now that we realise that it's not, we all look forward to Halo 3, just like we did with Halo 1, only this time we wonder to ourselves, whether it will be any good, or even worth buying. The optimism is now gone almost completely, and although most of us will remain devout fans of the Halo concept, most of us now hate, or at least dislike the games.

What are your thoughts on this?

Who are you speaking for? Halo 1 is considered one of the very best games of all time, so I don't know what that's all about. With Halo 2 the single player was not what many expected, but it was still one of the best. Nothing out there can touch its multiplayer, but that doesn't mean the game doesn't have problems. I was dissappointed the game didn't go far enough in terms of a covenant invasion (I still miss the E3 level...). Most gamers love the games, but that's why people are complainig like it sucked. I think they did too much wrong, many things should have been fixed, but I still love it.

He may be speaking of me. I have truly grown to hate the Halo series. I mean, I love playing them, but I hate them. Halo is so bland. "Let us take four years to make a standard FPS!" . I love the FPS genre- but it is stained with mediocrity.

One thing, the Master Cheif. He's a guy. With a green suit. Which is made of metal. And he has a helmet. Yay. Grunts are the highlight of the game.

Second thing. Halo 2's story(from MC's perspective). Do what you did in the last game, but be in space a bit longer. I mean, we start with an unexpected abrupt Convenant invasion. *Plays Pillar of Autumn, compares this level with the Cairo station*. Same shit, new place. *Looks at MC's Halo 2 ending, then looks at Halo 1's ending.* Big explosion, Master Cheif making a death defying escape. Ahem, is MC's Halo 2 story the first games story, but spell checked?

Thirdly- The gameplay. Hey- I remeber shooting that Grunt, Elite, Hunter, Jackal AND Flood from the first game! Good AI my anus. Who cares/ notices?

Official Halo Hater #1. And Halo liker. I like/hate it. I like playing it, but hate the game. ARGH!

This belongs in the Halo thread. I didn't think you were this stupid, mawk.

Leeum 02-16-2005 12:42 AM

I played Halo for the PC and hated it, not sure why i normally love FPS' but it just didn't do it for me. Doubt the second does either, too much conflict with Half-Life 2, everyone knows it kicked Halo 2's ass :D

I'm speaking for myself and for those who I know hate the games but love the concept.

And to be honest, you're just plain wrong. Half Life 2 blew Halo 2 away, no competition. It's better single player, and better multiplayer, hands down winner in both catagories. It's better thought out and more entertaining on both counts. And Halo 2 is really only one of the best on the Xbox. Which simply proves that the Xbox is just another mediocre console.

First mistake; assuming that I give a shit about what you do or don't think.

For the sake of unpolluting the truth, this thread is a completely seperate discussion to the Halo thread. The Halo thread deals with game info, hype, and other dull crap like that. This thread is an intelligent (well... potentially) debate dealing with specific subject matter, the Halo thread is not, and if you cannot discern that difference on your own, then it is you who is stupid.

MC get's aboard a covenant ship at the end of halo2 not escape from an explosion.

Second:obviously your'e gonna face the same enemie's from the first game every sequel does that(name's some) Kingdom heart's2, Final fantsy1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, etc.!

Third:It's a sequel of course there was gonna be a return of the main character.

MojoMan220 02-16-2005 01:20 PM

Most gamers think Halo 2 an Half-Life 2 are very good games, so why start a stupid debate thread. There's a lot of things I didn't like about both of them, but I don't feel the need to complain, it won't change anything.

Alpha 02-16-2005 01:24 PM

I'm not debating I'm pointing out and now I'm gonna stop posting in this thread

*SPOILER!**SPOILER!!*I seem to remember the cadet of the Cairo station (or whoever that guy was) saying that there was an unregistereed ship coming in, and MC was on it, then he said something like "Finishing this fight", or something cheesey along those lines.
(Escaping from something, on that ship.)

MO, then Stranger?

:

Kingdom heart's2
We don't even know that for sure. At least they are variants on the origional Darkness thingies, not just the same model with a re-texture.

:

Final fantsy1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, etc.!
What are you saying, man?! If you stop for a moment and play an RPG for a second, you'll notice Final Fantasy 1 has VERY different enemies opposed to Final Fantasy X-2, but I see where you are getting at.

:

Third:It's a sequel of course there was gonna be a return of the main character.
If just the Arbiter was in it, life would be a little more worth living. OK, mabye the game will just be a little bit better.

Just another note: MC in Halo 2 is supposedly more human. He makes wise cracks, and is over the Clint Eastwood of scifi video games. I mean- you're this macho guy with a mouth. Watch the scene where Arbiter and MC were captured by that flood thingy brain. You'll see what I mean.

Alpha 02-17-2005 08:21 AM

Yeah about MO and Stranger they are two diffrent Character's they don't count as Sequel's because Stranger was nver in MO.

Actually, Half Life is considered one of the best games of all time, Halo 1 doesn't come close. Not even in the top 10.
Halo is only loved by most XBOX gamers anyway. And XBOX gamers only make up about a quarter of the gaming world.

The X-box has only been out for about a year. And there are ton's of top ten best games of all time I've seen plenty with Halo at the top, well last year anyway now it's Halo2:p

Actually it's over 3 years old. It was released Nov 15 2001. And the reason people got PS2 instead is cos,

1. They were used to PS1
2. PS2 was out sooner

Alpha 02-17-2005 12:48 PM

Oh yeah 3 year's( I live in the past). But still Mawk you said that when halo came out we learned of halo2 we all new it was gonna be brill AND IT WAS!!!. I have never enjoyed multiplayer and single player like that my whole 13 year's of life. And the wealth of secret's is amazing you could eat lie royalty out of em and have second's third's fourt's ETC.!. And you said that we all wonder will halo3 be good enough? the answer yes and much more. end of story

Leto 02-17-2005 07:04 PM

Which is you completely missing my point. Yes there are demons- but demons are just a species. Many variants were made on the demons, but in Halo's case, the enemies weren't even being considered for a slight redesign.
