A Cure For Cancer....AIDs?!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4257783.stm
The irony that one of the world's biggest killers can be used to fight another massive killer.

he

thats strange...
where do you get to know such things?

TheRaisin 02-14-2005 02:15 PM

I would be laughing my ass off if AIDS and cancer weren't such serious subjects. Aw hell, I'll laugh my ass off anyway.

*TheRaisin does so*

I love irony. Irony is the spice of life.

Can't laugh... I read today a news that a new and much more dangerous type of AIDS recently was discovered in New York. Incubation time: 2 to 20 months instead up to 10 years of the 'normal' type...

Alcar 02-14-2005 11:22 PM

That is pretty ironic. Though, if it works, it'll save a lot of people. But if fails, and somehow mutates into the harmful AIDs version, world destruction!

Alcar...

hehe

its just not to do...You know what!
but that maybe hard for some peoples.

TheRaisin 02-15-2005 03:44 PM

And needles too. But that's probably not such a big part of it. And I don't really expect junkies to stop before injecting and say "All right, now we've gotta sterilize it to make it save to use again."

But yeah, how hard is it to remember to wear one of them there things? Jeezus. They're what, twenty-five cents if you get one out of a vending machine? There's no excuse for failing to adequately protect oneself when they're so readily available.

And to get back on topic, I read that link and it's some incredible stuff. It makes sense though. Both HIV and cancer target the same type of cells, so you turn one into a weapon against the other. I don't pretend to know much about this sort of thing, but from a logical standpoint and with the information the link provides, it sounds pretty realistic to me. Now what would be really great is if they could take this benign form of HIV and use it to destroy malevolent HIV. That would be excellent.

On a slightly related note, I read in the newspaper yesterday that men who are circumcised are 7 times less likely to catch aids through their penis than those with an intact foreskin. They are also less likely to get penis cancer or give their partner cervical cancer because the virus that causes both of them incubates under the foreskin.

Havoc 02-16-2005 07:38 PM

Heh, thats strange. One would expect it to be vice versa. Ah well.

I read a while ago that the cure agains AIDS is going into third stage of testing. I dunno how much stages there are, but the fact that it made the paper means that its special :).
Im afraid cancer is still something that can't be cured... maybe in 10 or 20 years :(.

The problem with cancer is that every type needs its own cure. Some have better techniques than others.
