How do I tell if I have diabetes?
 

Hi all.

Bit worried here. I was watching Holby City(A British Hospital drama soap) and somebody had diabetes. It made me realise SHIT! I have a lot of sugar. I know you'll all think I'm stupid or paranoid, but I'm just concerned. My friend is a GP and she told me that all people who are diagnosed with diabetes show symptoms first, it can't be hidden-but I'm still worried. Loads of people have told me that I'm fine and to cut down on sugar and I have but I am still worried. Anybody know about diabetes here?

a) This is a bit gross but taste a bit of your piss (don't worry, a little won't make you sick). If it tastes sweet then you could have diabetes.
b) Go to a doctor for a test. All you need to do is piss in a cup and they stir in some powder. It turns into different colours if you do or don't have diabetes.

In any case eating a lot of sugar is not a symptom of diabetes. Lethargy and drinking a lot of water are better signs.

The doctor also takes a blood sample for testing; when I was tested that's what they did at least.

Lethargy and water? Wow, I'm a prime candidate. Although I haven't tasted my pee, so I can't be sure.

I drink alot of water, but thats because we get free bottles of water at my school, and I'm like "what the hell?" and I get like five.....

Or do you mean the urge to drink water constantly, due to dehydration?

Free water at your school? Rock on. You must live somewhere cool.

There was a free supply of water at my school. It was called a tap.

Oh, how clever. No one who has ever seen the tap water at my school would even consider it. My school, Eisenhower High School, was probably actually built while Eisenhower was in office, and the pipes are so old and rusted that the water comes out yellow when you first turn on a faucet. There is no filtration system for the drinking fountains. The water that comes out looks like and is as warm as piss, and might well be for all I know, considering the taste.

I eat alot of sugar, i mean alot by like a tonne. But i think one of the symptons is feeling lightheaded.

I was going to say I'm about two symptoms away from showing all the signs of type 1 diabetes, but most of them can be explained by the fact that I hardly eat anything and that I'm a very sedentary person. And when they say weight loss they probably mean something drastic. Five pounds over a period of several months is nothing drastic, I have come to realize. :p
