Oddworld & Microsoft

With the new systems comming in, do you think Oddworld Inhabitants will stick with Microsoft, or go with the new Playstation? I mean oddworld did start out on the PS. But since I haven't read anything about switching or not switching their is always a possiblity. I hope not though.

New light of the Xbox?! Geez people, its just a console. I know this is nothing to argue over, but these STUPID console wars must stop.

I personally think the next game will come on whichever console comes out first. Seems to be the ways of OWI.

*Eye twitch*

Kimon 01-31-2005 06:51 PM

I think it'll come out for both. OI has been trying to do this for years. But if it has to choose, I seriously doubt it will dump the Xbox audience.

Nate 01-31-2005 07:00 PM

I think the next game will still be for the Xbox, as I've said before.

But I think its too early to comment on where OWI will go once the next-next-gen systems are established. All of them are going to have power, which Mr Lorne wants. Industry gossip has hinted that the PS3 is going to be easier to program for than the PS2 (which should make him happy) whilst the Xbox Next looks to be stupidly complicated. But its still too early to pass judgement.

tsioc 01-31-2005 09:04 PM

I read an interview where Lorne said he was planning to do the next game for both Xbox 2 AND PS3... he said he wanted to with Stranger, but started on the PS2 version too late...

Alcar 02-01-2005 03:16 AM

From what I've heard, the Xbox 2 is being pushed to be released Christmas 2005. As a result, the specifications and developer useability will be poorer than that of the PlayStation 3, when it is released. Going along with Lorne's firm statement that he wants his games to be built on industry leading technology, we might see Oddworld shift back to Sony.

But I highly doubt that. It'll mean another shift, one that will make Lorne out to be a hypocrite, though only in the biased media. We'll know that he is simply using the best technology, but other people are stupid (read: general population). More interesting is that I'm going to have to buy new consoles, so I'll be starting a fund up very soon to contribute ;)

I think Oddworld are intending to use both the Xbox 2 and the PS3.
Whether they actually do depends on a lot of things, I suppose.

Fuzzles! 02-01-2005 08:22 AM

I really don't see them abandoning the Xbox or it's next gen version. I can see them opening up and making a multi-console game, but frankly I don't see them doing the console jump again.

OWI learned a lesson... Lorne said it
my money on the fact the next game will be multiplatform

Volsung 02-01-2005 06:19 PM

Now that EA's publishing (are they still in on the next game?) it will almost definitely be multi-platform. OWI will program for whichever console they prefer, and EA can deal with the port. I'd be happy with that.

But I won't be happy with buying a new console.

Xavier 02-02-2005 11:23 AM

EA was also supposed to make OSW multi consoles
but they failed...

Volsung 02-02-2005 02:09 PM

They got in too late. If they had been publishing since the beginning I'm sure the story would have been different. Don't get me wrong, EA sucks, but if they're in on the next game from the beginning a port is an inevitability. That's just the way they play the game.

tsioc 02-02-2005 09:07 PM

below is the quote that I read concerning the new consoles...

"We'll continue the Oddworld brand, but with the atmosphere of the world today we were inspired to birth another universe. This one's Earth in the future - and not too far in the future. It's a very intense gaming experience, and it's about martial law and the diminishment of civil liberties. It hits far closer to home than Oddworld does. I expect that if we're blessed enough to see it through that there'll be quite a few senators and congressmen who'll be really pissed off. And I hope they are, because we're really pissed off at their behaviour.

When we asked Lorne if these plans were for Xbox or Xbox 2 he told us, "We have plans for both Xbox and Xbox 2, and of course PS2 and PS3. We missed out on PS2 with Oddworld Stranger's Wrath because we got on board so late in the day, but we don't intend to miss the opportunity again."

that's what I was refferning to tsioc... thanx for finding the quote back ;)

Fuzzleman54321 03-03-2005 10:30 AM

I think that it won't just be on consels, it will be on PC too!

T-nex 03-03-2005 10:41 AM

I don't think it will be on PC. But it would be awesome if it did. I love my PC :)

WineDarkSea 03-03-2005 10:29 PM

I agree that the next game will most likely come out as a multiplatform game, but I highly doubt it will be released for PC. PC really seems to be less of EA's thing, but I do think their would be a market for a PC version.

The truth of the matter is that OWI probably chose to make Munch's Oddyssey for XBOX only because Microsoft was pumping cash into their company for exclusive rights.

Sure, Lanning said the XBOX was the best technology on the market, and that might be partially true, but think about it: why would OWI make Munch only for one console? Oddworld fans had been waiting for 3 years for a new Oddworld game. Had Munch been released on multiple platforms, OWI would have made a killing on the game. Therefore, in order for it to be exclusive, Microsoft had to be paying OWI in compensation.

It's either that, or someone devised a horrible marketing strategy (which I shouldn't be saying since I know the marketing director, and she's really nice).

Anywho, if OWI goes exclusive on the next generation consoles, expect ample compensation for whichever company wins them out.

I, of course, would love to see multi-platform. It will make my choice of a new system that much easier.
