Favourite Classic Game
 

What is your favourite classic computer game? My definition of 'classic' is nothing that has come out in the last five years - so pre-2000 and pre the current generation of consoles. I'm also going to place a ban on any Oddworld games so we don't get too much repetition.

Rather than giving a long list of games - which is what seems to happen every time we discuss our favourite games - name one game and describe why it is so special.

I'm going to have to go with Grim Fandango. Whilst all of Tim Schafer's games for Lucasarts were lobbying for the number one position, Grim won out due to its incredible art, style and the mood that they managed to set. In parts it is laugh-out-loud funny and in others heart-wrenchingly sad. This is the only game I've seen that competes with Oddworld for the quality of the cutscenes and it beats all comers on the soundtrack.

So go out and get it - you won't regret it.

Galaga, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and any game featuring Yoshi.

Pong. Word up.

In 10 years time, Halo 2. Yay!

Descent. It's sort of hard to explain , but I've always liked Descent, and I've got all 3 of the series (but not all the add-ons). It had quite a good storyline (I thought so, anyway), even though the aim of every level in the first two games was essentially the same.

I can't really think at the moment, but I love the Sonic games on the Mega Drive.

Starcraft for me. Methinks it's the one game that inspired others to make great RTS's.

I really like the classic Point&Click adventure games, so I say Woodruff and the Schnibble of Azimuth for first place. The characters are humourous, and nothing goes right with normal logic.
For second place, there's Day of the Tentacle. Another great one, a bit older than Woodruff. The graphics are simple, but good.

Jazz Jackrabbit - The ultimate 'classic' game. I really love this game. It was a part of my childhood, and i really loved the storyline and gameplay. I still play it from time to time.

The Zelda game for snes. Can't remember the subtitle.

Rocks & Gems

I first played it on a PS1 freebee disk and I seemed to find the word ass extremely funny at the time. I can remember that you could walk up to somebody and that they would tell you that you were stupid, and if they did this you can tell them to sod off and poke em' into the river. I'm amazed I ever laughed at that but I was young.

Mr. Potoato Head- Disaster in Veggie Valley
I first pkayed this game when I was young. Another clicking game with the mouse. I didn't understand why Mr. Potato Head didn't sound like Don Wrikles, as I only thought that Mr. Potato Head came from Toy Story.

(I only like Rocks & Gems out of those two)

My best classic game woulld have to be either the first Sonic game on the Megadrive, Street Fighter (I've forgotten what console it was on) or Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the N64.

Age of Empires: My first dip in the RTS genre was an immersive and amazing one. It mixed history with amazingly fun gameplay, which has evolved unprecedantly in the past years as more RTS games have hit the shelves, from Age of Empires II to the more recent Empires: DMW and by the current looks of things, Age of Empires III.
The main pull initially for me was the appearance of brilliant looking battles, but then I realised just how historical the game was, and it has helped me become mroe and more interested in the periods involved in those games.

After Ensemble Studios began creating RTS games, the genre has become more and more innovative and every RTS game is now compared to ES' gem.

Probably Tim Schafer's Full Throttle, Crash Bandicoot Warped, FFIX, or Sonic 3 & Knuckles. If Red Alert 2 was made before 2000 (can't recall), I count that too.

Yeah, Full Throttle is great too. A bit short though.

Can you suggest a better definition? I just wanted to stop all the people who were going to list Halo2 or Doom3 as if they were classics. They may be one day, but they are not yet.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has always had a special place in my heart. Man, I loved that game. Sega Genesis all the way! Woo! Heh, I loved just about every little game I had for that thing.

I've also liked all the Sims games made since I was little, even the extremely old ones. They gave/give me a God-like feeling of power... :evil:

Gotta be System Shock 1 & 2. Those were scary at the time and great RPG/Action FPS games. They paved the way for games like Chronicles of Riddick, Dues Ex 1 & 2 as well as Bloodlines. Truly an unknown god game.

I can't think of a better name for what you want, but I consider classics to be anything on old systems like Sega Master System, Mega Drive, Nintendo, SNES, and older.

So many... Alex the Kidd. It was the game on my Master System when you just turned it on without a cartridge.
Then, Elder Scrolls: Arena. I may have been a young-in, but I still enjoyed it. (RELEASE IT ON PSP, YOU BASTARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Thirdly, Mortal Kombat 1. So much better than all the rest.
Lastly, Doom 1 and Day of the Tentacle. SO great...
