Which do you prefer Digital or Traditional art!
Which kind of art do you artists and illustrators out there prefer best to work with?
Traditional media or Digital media? With me I like both worlds and I believe I have an advantage with knowing both worlds of art because I could be sitting at my desktop one day working on a design when all of a sudden my computer crashes. Uh oh what do I do then? Well since I know traditional media I can simply get out my old brushes and pencils and do the design very quickly because I know how to do everything without the computer. I always do my creative stuff in my own studio with traditional media like doing a painting or airbrushing, and then scan it in or photograghing it because it may be too big for scanning. All my digital art starts off as a traditional drawing I do then I simply go ahead and paint the scanned line drawing on the computer that way I know that my art is genunie and not some cheap clipart. Now that I have an account at e-bay I will start selling some of my work on e-bay for like $74.00. But of course e-bay is most certainly not easy money. How do you like to work in your art? |
I like both too.
Many people think that digital art is easier than traditional, but it's wrong. I've seen some amazing pictures made with a 2D software (like PSP, Photoshop, or even Painter), the artist took a lot of time to create it. It's same for traditional art. You use different ways (real ways I could say), but you spend so much time, like digital's. Moreover, you can't do digital work (I mean a pro work, not a kid work) without having knowledges in traditional. I love both, I love the mixture of periods, so poetic. |
I'd have to say I prefer digital art. The main reason being that I'm only any good with digital art. I can't draw traditionally to save my live. You wouldn't believe how bad I am.

In front of me, I'd like a piece of traditional art over digital art, because it tends to have more texture and depth on the canvas - or paper.
Both types can produce equally stunning piece of work, though. |
They both take large amounts of creativity but my vibe is that traditional art requires more innate skill.
And I'd have to agree with Esus; traditional art feels deeper and can touch you (or at least me) more, whilst digital art often feels clean, cold and disconnected. EDIT: just realised this thread was about what we like to work with. I was talking about what I like to view. Truth is, I don't create any art because I don't have the talent. |
I do love pencil skethes, but I like usally doing Digital Painting. It's realy makes my pictures look fantastic, and with lot' of detail, and nice to look at .If only my Program wound't crash. It's new to me too, I still done some pictures, and I'm looking forward to my progress.
I tried doing a painting with acril/ poster paint, but my painting never turn out the way I wanted to be, and it's hard to out those little details, I just like doing detailed pictures. I have made a painting not to long ago, of Necrum, I going to take a picture and show to Fan corner. But my drawing always start with pencels and ink, and them I start to scan them. :

I prefer digital, mainly because of two reasons: 1)I'm really bad at colouring real pictures, and 2)in digital art it is easier to correct a mistake.
That's what I think anyway. |
Here is my critisisem towards people who only know digital art. I say they need to rethink what they want to do. My advice learn fine art before jumping onto the computer. Because if you can't draw with a pencil then you shouldn't be an artist. I don't care what anyone says without basic art skills the computer is only half the battle.
|
=> Virtually every interview I've ever read with a professional computer artist or animator says you should learn traditional skills first.
|
I wasn't saying that I only know digital art, I just prefer it. I can draw with pencil and all of that, I just can't colour very well with real paints.
|
I like Traditional Art. I think Asian Art is also really exotic. I really like this picture, I have a Batik of it at home. It's some kind of mythical Indian beast called a 'Yali' and is enshrouded in Hindu and Buddhist myth and is seen a lot in India and Thailand.

Acually, all my drawings, and digital pictures are done in pencil first, digital I use for colouring. It's hard to make great picture drawing with the computer, unless your using photos.
|
I like Traditional art, It feels like it has more control. I'm working on a serialism drawing right now, and having a great time doing it. :D

I think it's important to learn both, at the very least so as you can do one when it's not possible to do the other.
Personally, I'm a keen painter, both digitally and traditionally. I interpret the finished work of both in the same way, so I don't think it has a great effect on your work. Traditional art is possibly less hassle though, you can use your paints or pencils in so many more situations than a computer and tablet. Digital art is cheaper, mainly one-time costs with little maintenance. |
