shrykull

What would have the quintology been like if it wasn't Abe who ventured out to save the mudoken race? Shrykull played a crucial part in Abes journey, but is Abe the only one who can harness the mystic powers of those tattoos? And there's Abes color, as we all know he is a pale blue instead of the traditional green, is this a trait of a unique new breed of Mudoken whose molecular structure is slightly unstable? enabling them to undergo a strange metamorphosis?

yup these are the things i think about when i get bored, i would like to know your theories and comments.

Esus 12-26-2004 01:49 PM

shrykul is not unique to Abe, that much I remember from the Art book.

Musica 12-26-2004 01:53 PM

okay then if you're right then are the others blue as well? did they have to go through the trials that Abe did to recive the tattoos? is Abe part of a new breed? they're all questions that need answering!! so please more posts

Rich 12-27-2004 04:03 AM

Abe is blue as a mark that he is the messiah. Other than that Bigface could have given anyone the same powers and there would be little difference. Abe is strongwilled compared to the other Mudokons. Bigface is more powerful than Abe and so are the other Mudokon leaders.

Xavier 12-27-2004 04:41 AM

well Abe is the only blue mud, who succeeded the tests, from who we heard, there maybe be others, or not

Rich 12-27-2004 06:44 AM

If remember in AO, monsaic lines, a story stone says: "Only one shall be so bold".
Abe is that one, however bigface could have helped any Mud do the trials.

Xavier 12-27-2004 06:47 AM

I don't remember such a thing...
I only remember a stone saying only a blue mud would succeed to pass the tests

Stuv 12-27-2004 04:55 PM

I read something in the art book that his skin color had something to do with working at rupture farms. Maybe that is the reason he is a different color, but then again still all the others are green so I'm still am not really sure.

Can you get the books in the US yet....I wanna get one

Godlesswanderer 12-27-2004 07:13 PM

You can get them everywhere. You could from the start I think.

Necrum Miner 12-27-2004 07:59 PM

There were other blue mudokons, at the beginning of AO, working the levers. Also, Mudokon Pops were blue.

The Shrykull was an ancient half-scrab, half-paramite god. That's why it's so powerful.

We asume Abe is the only one that could've used the Shrykull's powers, since he's the only one that has power in his chants.

Rich 12-28-2004 09:41 AM

I think that Bigface and the Shamen can possess stuff. And many normal Mudokons chanting at once can produce lots of power.

go here, it's the easiest way ;)

Volsung 12-28-2004 12:10 PM

Abe can't be the only mudokon to be able to possess things. He may be preternaturally good at it, but there are anti-possession orbs all over the games, why go to that trouble if there was only one who could do it? And ignoring that, in hand of odd there were going to be mudokons chanting to regrow forests, so its clear that they all have "power". So yes, I agree with Rich, here. But somehow I doubt that Abe is the beginning of a new genetic trend.

In classic "saviour" form Abe has been set apart from the rest of the mudokons, if it were suggested he was able to lead them because he was the first of a new breed, if would cheapen him personally, (I think); and if it is his goal to free the rest of the mudokons, then it causes a shift in the way he's percieved. Can he save all the normal Mudokons, or mightn't he just wait for the new and improved ones? Abe is one of a kind, but its nothing genetic that sets him apart. Its just him.

I was going to say something similar.

Possible theory: Abe is blue as Lorne wanted to put in a slight hint about skin colour, racism and racial equality?

Volsung 12-28-2004 02:56 PM

Maybe, but if having different skin color made Abe the saviour then it doesn't bode well for racial equality. I think it probably just originated as the easiest way to separate Abe from the crowd. I mean, if they're all slaves, identically attired, without any ornamentation then you have to find some kind of birthmark to distinguish your character. I think Lorne's "hints" about racial equality can probably be seen via the amount of species equality. Kind of like animal farm without the socialism. Or with it, if you prefer.

Wil 01-01-2005 05:43 AM

Abe was created blue so that on the gamescreen he would be easily identifiable. It's just like the lights that float or eminate around possessed characters. Inside the Oddworld universe, Abe is blue as prophecised, making him the Saviour of the Mudokons. However, there are other blue Mudokons at Monsaic Lines. One wonders why they didn't undergo the same initiation rites as Abe - if they did, they either died or cowarded out.

Most all Mudokons can use their chant, though slaves and scrubs may not know how to. Native Mudokons can shift mountains with their mystic chant, so it's not like there's no power behind it. It's not been made clear whether other Mudokons can possess characters, but Volsung voices a good observation. There must be other Mudokons who have the ability to possess.

Shrykull is a godling, it is only described as half-god. Alf has spoken of it as if it can be a living creature. He can seem pretty obscure and distant in the game, but I think I recall that Shrykull favours Abe: for the temple trials and for rescuing Mudokons (in the game this is represented as Shrykull portals). Don't quote me on that bit, though.

No molecular instability; no different breeds or species. ;)

Xavier 01-01-2005 06:36 AM

wow, that was very intresting Max... I didn't knew that those things about the shrykull.

I can't wait to see the muds actually shift mountains, or something big like that

Leeum 01-01-2005 10:24 AM

When Abe is just about to be dropped into the meat saw at the end of AO, donesn't bigface and the muds save him with some sort of a shrykull power? I don't see anyone actually turn into it, just the connection with the blue lightning.

Xavier 01-01-2005 10:31 AM

well it's the "chant" power... the same power used by the shrykull I think

The Shadowman 01-01-2005 10:37 AM

I wanted to see the shrykull in MO. Oh well, in MO I think Abe must be on steroids because he can beat a slig to death easily, all he could do before was knock em' over in the dark by pressing 5. And he is tougher in combat, he can take multiple hits from bullets and Blitz Packers and still withstand it.

It's because MO was rushed and cartoony and didn't bode well for the future of Oddworld.

Max, your attempts at explanation are commendable.

Wil 01-02-2005 02:02 AM

Thank you, Rich. It's my pleasure. Sadly.

BlitzPacker weaponry isn't designed to kill, it's designed to get the firee addicted to Brew. One result of Munch's Oddysee's rushed development was that this never became a big part of the gameplay as was intended.

Rich 01-02-2005 02:10 AM

I'm still disapointed by the Sobe vendos. Oddworld is supposed to be a parody of Earth! Not have real Earth stuff in it!

Also if the names "Outlaws" and "Outlaw minions" are names of the species I shall lose faith in OWI. The least they could do is think up decent names.

Mudokons and Glukkons (having a slight reference to Gluttony?) are original names. Steef is an original name.

Wil 01-02-2005 02:20 AM

That's a sentiment I share deeply. The name “Interns” was bad enough. “Chroniclers” isn't much better, either.

I was never affected by the SoBe vendos as I had the European version, as I would have thought you would, Rich. I had no problem with the partnership whatsoever, as SoBe seems to be a very good company. Sheesh, I wouldn't have minded an advert in the manual, as long as it was tucked away somewhere at the back, but in the game it's only going to intrude on the Oddworld universe.

I don't own the game, nor have I played it. Judging by the opinions of others, screenshots and audio clips it seems to be an insult compared with the Abe games.

Wil 01-02-2005 02:48 AM

An insult? Personally, I think a lot of people over reacted to it, but I can sympathise. I wouldn't want real-life products in the game. But some people even abandoned Oddworld forever just because of it, and I think that's just daft. They probably still play the games of other video game developers. Why desert a company for falling short of its own standards when it's still so far ahead of anything else.

Rich 01-02-2005 02:02 PM

True, I do want to play the game. I just can't. Yet. :p

Oddish 01-02-2005 03:04 PM

Prehaps In Citizen Siege they can add other companys thing as much as they like, becuase it is set on Earth. I have noticed that Oddworld is becomeing Earthly, than oddworldly. Even in Oddworld:Stranger's Wrath. Oddworld should carry on bieng a creative world.

Volsung 01-03-2005 06:02 PM

Which is all the more reason they should do Citizen siege. (Is that what you're sugesting?) I think the game requirements for OSW lent themselves to a more "earthly" design scheme because of the macho-overtones they've included. If you want to give the people something to visually relate to in terms of gesturing, its easier if there're a recognizable number of arms and legs. It would be difficult for a gabbit to look tough, aloof, and menacing if it also had to move around and fire projectiles. What with the hopping.

Needless to say, I'd prefer if there weren't any humanoids and the giant chickens weren't just giant chickens (with breasts, which does make it odd). But they were gonna go humanoid with some of the races, why not the ones in this game, where they can make the most sense. Better Stranger than the quintology. (Although once published they will become established and part of the quintology by proxy). And for their more directly earth-considered problems, better Citizen Siege than Oddworld. No matter how much you love the Oddworld universe, it would be unfair to dilute the brand by introducing problems and concerns Oddworld wasn't adequately equipped to deal with.

Just imagine Abe voicing concern over fraudulent elections and you'll see what I mean. It would be funny, but unrealistic and likely inneffective. The reasons for Citizen Siege are too specific for Oddworld to effectively handle. And if thats what the company wants to do, I want them to do it with citizen siege. (But I'd like to note that if OI had been concerned about a proliferation of humanoids, they could have, with relative ease, created original characters whose actions read as human.)
