Irrational Fears Mark II

The last Irrational Fears thread got a bit hijacked by persons who will not be named but may well have included yours truly. So for ease of whatever, I've started a new one for people who do not wish to wade through piles of neo-theological philosophy. [I just made that phrase up - does it sound like I know what I'm talking about?]

In any case here is a link to the original thread http://www.oddworldforums.net/showth...1&page=1&pp=30
and here is my original introduction:

:

Everyone has one irrational fear. It could even be a phobia. I'm not talking about well known ones like claustraphobia or agoraphobia. Also not rational fears like snakes or spiders. Just weird things to be afraid of.

My theory is that most are hang-overs from childhood, like I hate having the curtains in my bedroom fully closed because I like some light to see that there are no axe-murderers sneaking up on me in bed.

My other one is that sometimes when I sit on the toilet, I get paranoid that there is something in the bowl that is going to attack me, like a snake or something. This could come from either the outback legend of redbacks under the toilet seat or that episode of the X-Files with the stretchy, liver-eating bloke.

So come one everyone: share and gain some catharsis

Facsimile 11-29-2004 11:45 PM

I really don't think a new one is neccessary. They stopped their offtopicness.

Nate 11-30-2004 12:45 PM

Not really. All the last page of posts are off-topic. Plus anyone who may want to contribute for the first time may be scared off by the rubbishness of the whole thing.

But to prevent this thread getting off-track, I'll just say that I'm really scared of insinkerators. Even when they're turned off I refuse to put my hand down one.

Leto 11-30-2004 01:04 PM

I'm scared of woodworks machines, that a piece of wood is going to fly out and rip my face apart :P

OANST 11-30-2004 02:49 PM

I have a fear that I may have started the rubbishnes of the whole thing.;)

Al the Glukkon 11-30-2004 03:17 PM

I have a fear that all threads will turn into the same.

Nepharski 11-30-2004 04:37 PM

I have a most unusual fear...of sailboating.

TheRaisin 11-30-2004 08:22 PM

I have a fear that someday I'll be watching The Ring again and the phone will ring after the movie ends and I'll pick it up and the voice will say "Seven days." Or that the creepy evil little girl will crawl out of MY televiso-gramomatic contraption and kill me. Brrr.

Nate 11-30-2004 08:24 PM

Yeah, I avoid horror movies cos for weeks afterwards I get paranoid that they'll come true, or some idiot is going to try and recreate it.

TheRaisin 11-30-2004 08:32 PM

Do I hear a sequel coming on? "Scream 4! This time, the terror is REAL!!!"

Choking on a Lifesaver or other hard candy. Once a Lifesaver dissolved in my mouth until it was really thin and then it broke in two and both pieces slid down my throat and I couldn't breath and I think I would've died if my brother hadn't been in the room and gotten me a glass of water. And I'm always accidentally swallowing hard candies when they're still big and that hurts like heck.

Dipstikk 11-30-2004 09:11 PM

I have a fear of being eaten by midgets.

Why? I dunno. BUT I DO.

Alcar 11-30-2004 10:27 PM

I haven't watched the Exorcist for the sole reason that I've believed that the creators and some of the actors in the film died after its making. I'm still yet to get a friend to tell me the truth.

I'm afraid off ants, becouse i think they are yucki, and that i saw once saw a horror movie about them, where they ate a whole town :S

I also accidently put my foot on an ant-hill or whatever they're called, while i was barefooted. I guess you can imagine the results. I screamed like hell.

Cyber-Slig 12-01-2004 11:27 AM

Me ? Bikes . First my mum tells me to go down a hill . What happens ? I get a handle bar in the belly . Then I was at a canal and a bike ran me over . I hate the things . Whenever I see one I have to go over the other side of the road or onto a safe spot

Oddish 12-01-2004 11:30 AM

Yeah but it aint the bikes fualt, the your balance and gravity sklls.

Fuzzle Guy 12-01-2004 11:33 AM

Stop talking about horror movies, this thread is turning to be like the last as
Al the Glukkon predicted. Horror movies are not an irrational fear :fuzmad:

Cyber-Slig 12-01-2004 11:38 AM

Yes they are . Beleive it or not some horror movies/games can have a scary , emotional effect on you . For days . At day you're not scared . At night though if you're alone then you imagine shit . Project Zero(Fatal Frame) most certainly affected me

Fuzzle Guy 12-01-2004 11:42 AM

That's what I['m trying to say, millions of people are scarred of them, so they're not irrational!

Rich 12-01-2004 11:45 AM

Being scared of horror movies is not irrational. However, being scared of flying dustbins is. Can you see the difference?

Fuzzle Guy 12-01-2004 11:48 AM

Flying Dustbins? I've seen one in a Hurricane

Rich 12-01-2004 11:51 AM

I mean dustbins with wings, being afraid of a hurricane blowing stuff about is not irrational, many people would be scared.

TheRaisin 12-01-2004 01:30 PM

Arthropods. Doesn't matter how small they are, or how harmless. Insects, arachnids, little beach critters, anything with an exoskeleton (or the larva of something that will later have an exoskeleton) freaks the hell out of me. And that is an irrational fear. A lot of people might have phobias about insects and arachnids, but that doesn't make it any less irrational.

This might be partially caused by the fact that, living in the 'burbs, the few times I've come in contact with insects have been A) when I'm standing outside, minding my own business, and a bee suddenly buzzes deafeningly in my ear; B) when a spider decides that while I'm taking a shower is the best time to come out of hiding, preferrably by way of dropping onto my head; and C) the time I stood still on a hot summer's day in my driveway and, unbeknownst to me, perhaps three or four earwigs (or possibly centipedes) crawled up my roller blades and remained undetected until they were spread out across my arms, back, and legs.

EEK!! Oh god, the paranoia that movie creates is definitely credible because it actually involves the creepy girl coming through the television. I loved the movie when I saw it in the theater, but when I bought it (on vhs, which made it so much worse), Samara's(sp?) film starts playing... so I was like, "Agh! What if this is her real video and she's going to come out and kill me?!" My mom didn't understand that this wasn't the beginning of the actual movie, so she wouldn't let me fast-forward. I began to cry, and she yelled that I was making her miss it. So then she kept replaying it over and over because the more I cried, the more she "missed", and the more she replayed it, the more I cried. Such a traumatic cycle...

SeaRex 12-01-2004 04:15 PM

I'll tell you what scares the hell out of me. Spiders. Damnit, I hate spiders. And centipedes... especially the shorter ones with the longer, spindly legs and antennae.

Just the feeling of anything like a bug touching my skin freaks me out. Come to think of it, any unwelcome element, human or not, makes me jump.

I don't like to be touched.

Majic 12-01-2004 04:44 PM

:

I don't like to be touched.

I must be getting rusty. A quick response to that should come naturally for a bastard like me. And you left yourself wide open there, too.

So let's see... irrational fears, me? I have many rational ones, ones to be considered normal by everyday standards. Damnit, this is being troublesome. Ah, here we go. Should've been obvious. But, I'm constantly paranoid about people thinking I have bad breath. Despite the fact I eat, roughly anywhere from 2-8 Altoids an hour, depending on what class I'm in.

TheRaisin 12-01-2004 05:38 PM

Wouldn't it be ironic if all the sugar from all those Altoids started rotting your teeth and giving you bad breath? Ha ha ha. That would be great.

I had the same fear, but just like two days ago I started using Listerine again and my teeth and breath have never been better. Mmmyep.

Nate 12-02-2004 01:47 PM

Continuing on from TheRaisin, I get a little scared every time I eat steamed bok choi because one time a piece slid down my throat and cut off my breathing. I was choking and signalling my family for help but they just thought I was being dramatic (guess I cried wolf one time too many, huh?). Eventually I had to reach down my throat and pull it out with my fingers.

Facsimile 12-03-2004 12:11 AM

A fear of ideas in a video game or horror movie are irrational if it is something that couldn't happen. Eg. living dolls. Just because it is feared by many people, doesn't make it an actual threat. Therefore it is irrational.

Alcar 12-03-2004 02:26 AM

Everytime I enter a train I can't help but fear that it'll crash, or blow up. So I tend to choose the safest carriage to sit on :p

I know what you mean!

I really hate unwanted human contact. I totally flip at that. Which is a funny sight.
