Hurricane Charley took my town.

It was on Friday, if I'm not mistaken. Hurricane Charley took a turn towards our home town of Port Charlotte (And over the rest of Charlotte county) and left us with what looks like a warzone. truchs were pushed along the ground like a child's toy and houses either crumbled or gave way in the 170+ MPH winds. I heard it was one of the worst hurricanes to hit Florida since Andrew.

Our house is fine, according to sources back in Port Charlotte. But Dad's house had the ever-lovin' shit spanked out of it, and his boat (The place he slept and pretty much lived) is now at the bottom of the ocean at the hotel/marina. The marina is also demolished.

Mom, Dad and I had evacuated on Friday before the storm turned towards land, and I am now using my Opa's old coal-driven Piece-O-Shite (Seriously, that'sm the name on the CPU) to type this. Dad left for Fort Lauderdale on Sunday to look for an apartment. Mom and I will head back on Wednesday to a town with no electricity. I can't contact my friend Mike, since I think phones are down.

So begins a new chapter in my life, as this all took place on the weekend of my 18th birthday.

If anyone can offer their condolences (which I probably spelled wrong), please do. If you don't care, that's fine.

Well anyway, I should go. I'll be on later.

Holy crap! Good thing you got out of there!

The only natural disaster to hit my town(old town) was a tornado...and my house was fine.

Sucks to be you.

Hurricanes are mother nature's way of calling people stupid for living in Florida.

Awww, I'm just really glad you're alright, Dipstikk. I thought of you and Oddsville when it dawned on me where this Hurricane Charley was headed, and hoped you'd both be okay. Someone was using Oddsville's MSN account the other day, so I presume that it's a member of his household, and they're all fine.

Anyway, I hope the misfortunes that have struck you can be survived. Good luck!

Dipstikk 08-17-2004 06:11 AM

Thanks, Max. I'm sure we'll be fine.

Lucky your alright! The last thing that these forums needs is for a member to leave behind a big festering carcass!

Statikk HDM 08-17-2004 07:12 AM

Damn son. Same thing happened to John, a friend of mine. Charley pretty much raped the town and posted pictures of it over the internet. It was brutal.

Actually, it would make no difference because there is a small chance of us finding out about such a predicament.

BUT WHAT HAPPENED WITH MY COUSIN???!!!! I DON'T CHAT WITH HER FOR A LONG TIME AGO!!!

DarkHoodness 08-20-2004 01:01 PM

Oh. . . Sorry to hear that you got hit, Dipstikk. I had another friend online whom the hurricane was meant to hit, but fortunately it changed direction and missed her by a few miles. She should think herself lucky.
Shame you weren't unaffected by it. *pats* But at least you managed to evacuate and still have your life, right?

Although I do not live in Florida, I was on holiday (Vacation) and it just missed my Vacation villa.
I was staying in a place called 'Bass Lake' in 'Polk County' and had to evacuate. Although I was not in a mobil home, I evacuated due to the Hurricane changing cousre.

On the TV it said that there was a Tornado warning. It was far away from where I was so didn't go. Later on it said that the Tornado was going towards north of Polk county. We looked out the window and we could see a massive Tornado only two miles away from us. This is when we decided to Evacuate. When we were in the shelter, my Mum thought that it was ok to go out and get our belongings from the villa since on the Radio they said everything was fine. Just as she left, the Tornado hit again, only 200 yrds down the road from us!!!

Once she came back the Radio told us that it was an F5 Tornado that had just blew out north of Polk County. (Although since the Radio said that it was Ok to go out in a F5 Tornado, I doubt it was F5)

The Hurricaine changed cause and it was now catorgry 5. The eye was supposed to go directly over the shelter. And the walls were rattling. Most people were standing up at the window filming (Including me 'Typical Film Director'). When it got more powerful I went in the hall with my family and putm y head between my knees. The Eye just missed us but destroyed most of Polk County and Orlando. I went to Universal the next day, and most of the rides where damaged.

Safe at home now. Definately got to make a movie of this!

Glad you are Ok Dipstikk

I lived in oklahoma for 8 years and saw 12 tornados. The biggest one I ever saw was the F5 and it took out the entire town of brige creek and tore our roof apart but It wasnt so bad. 1 1/2 mile wide and getting bigger by the second, kinna cool actualaly. Hurracane Charly......WOW your very luckey, 1 to have a computer, 2 to have your family there with you, and 3 to be alive. Good luck with recovery and take care.

Sekto Springs 09-06-2004 06:19 AM

Bah, tornadoes are scarier than hurricanes. My friend saw a water spout tornado and he said it almost made him shit himself. I mean really, it's scarier to see the anger of a storm in physical form hurling itself at your town than to get hit by a 10+ tropical storm.

oddguy 09-06-2004 08:55 AM

Wow...Hurricane Frances is being a biyatch to Florida right now. That's a shame, especially since Florida allready went through a recent hurricane!

Fuzzle Guy 09-06-2004 09:56 AM

It's strange as I wanted to go back to Florida as it just didn't seem right not being in the Hurricane when it's on.

:

Bah, tornadoes are scarier than hurricanes.

Well, that is the only reason i was in the shelter.

misty 09-06-2004 04:32 PM

hmmm..... I think sligslinger is right I am deathly afraid of tornados but not so as huracanes..........cool, and then not so cool

Majic 09-06-2004 04:50 PM

In Dallas, the only thing a Hurricane can possibly equate to is a little extra rainfall; always welcome. Tornado's can be pretty nasty around here, but there's hasn't really been any heavy hits close to me personally. There was one in the middle of Fort Worth, I know, and there's always reports of petty little towns getting struck, but nothing much. I do remember, though, up in Oklahoma a few years ago. There 27, or some other unreasonable number, of tornados in 2 nights I believe. Heavy hitting storms in the Spring/Fall do some damage, getting some wicked winds. Last year I believe, there was this massive storm with huge chunks of hail, oftentimes still see cars driving around covered in dents.

So, in short. Hurricanes matter nothing. Tornado's matter little. Severe thunderstorms are a bitch.

Seargentbig 09-07-2004 12:11 AM

Um... is everyone alive? Are we all good? Let me rephrase that - will we all recover?
Yes? Good. Recover soon!

paramiteabe 09-07-2004 03:22 AM

Well glad to hear your alive. I have family who live in Punta Gorda Flordia the place that was hardest hit. Luckly they were alive and their place was still standing. But the yard was a mess. U can replace yards but you can't replace lives.

Paramiteabe... :fuzblink:

Fuzzle Guy 09-07-2004 07:09 AM

Well said Paramiteabe.
