Xbox minimised?
I was thinking about how the hot game systems of today would end up obsolete like the NES in the future. Do you think that maybe the major companies like Microsoft and Sony will advance onto miniaturised systems like the Gameboy? Like an Xbox would become the size of it's controller with a built-in screen and everything. I was wondering what your input is on this matter. We all know that in the near future a new system(s) will take it's place above all the rest, and then another will take it's place, and so on. I suppose that the gaming industry will be about until the day we die. Maybe video games will become so real that they become a danger to minds.

I saw this one story on the news a while back, that had someone experimenting playing a game with thier mind. It was a simple snowboarding type game...just left, right and jump. This person had all sorts of devices connected to them, but they could steer the boarder somewhat acurately just by thought. I wonder if games in the future could harness such a technology, but make it more advanced. -oddguy  |
I remember I went to some amusement park and they had these video games that had the same principal as Eye-Toys only advanced. Proof that such technology is a simplicity in the future.
|
Yeah, about a year ago I think I mentioned that too. I mean think of a miniturized xbox being able to link up with friends and play linked halo on a hand held would be pretty damn cool if they made it like the graphics of the system itself. I mean microsoft has the money and resources to definately create and ultimate handheld in my opinion.
|
Yes to all. It will happen. More will happen, in my opinion. Think about how much technology has advanced in the last 250 years (that's about when the Industrial Revolution began, I believe). Imagine how different our technology will be in another 250 (barring some sort of Battlefield Earth or Transall Saga scenario). You can't really, can you? Unless you're some kind of Jules Verne or Isaac Asimov. In a quarter of a millenium, things will be so different, we probably wouldn't recognize a video game from that time period as being a video game. I just hope I can live to see VR games and flying cars being marketed to the public.

That is totally possible. Look at the PSP from Sony. The cover of the Gran Turismo 4 Mobile has this confident quote..."It's product quality is not at all inferior to its PS2 counterpart..." On the PSP, you can play friends over a wireless LAN, and I believe it can connect to a Wi-Fi Internet connection, for wireless online play. The Nintendo DS can do this as well. -oddguy  |
Uh-oh. Nintendo and Sony are getting one up on Microsoft. C'mon people, get moving on a handheld!
|
Sony will probly move up to handhelds before Microsoft, they've already miniaturised the PS1 with a built-in screen and aren't far off to a handheld. Xbox is Microsoft's first real system and still have a ways to go before they shrink that mammoth-sized system down to a hand sized. We also have systems like the Phantom and such coming out (Xbox 2?) and they will make the systems of today obsolete. I think that the older systems have some of the best games created and will have some more customers for years to come. PS2 has indeed made PS1 obsolete since it can act as a platform for both games, I'm even going to sell my PS1 on E-bay though I doubt anyone will take it, it's had such a beating.

No, they need to focus on their next console. The hand-held market is lost. There is absolutely no way MS can convince the increasingly small hand-held community of players that their system would be better than Sony's or Nintendo's current systems.
With talk of no hard drive and no backwards compatibility on MS's new console, the Xenon, it's obvious they need to keep their current market happy instead of trying to seduce a new one with some hackneyed hand-held garbage. |
Yes, but because of the increasing competition (even though MS is currently on top in my opinion) they may eventually have to resort to drastic measures for marketing, but it won't happen any day soon. Like Nintendo, they may have to make a hand-held system. I would actually like to see a hand-held Xbox. Nintendo made a mistake by frantically releasing newer versions of the Gameboy to raise stock and customer satisfaction (Gameboy, Gameboy pocket, Gameboy colour, Gameboy advanced, Gameboy SP Is that many really necessary?) but finally got back on the good foot with Gamecube (even though I hate it). Microsoft's Xenon is just a "step-up" like I mentioned and will probly be replaced by another soon following. Gameboy was basically the SNES re-released after the N64, who's to say that they won't re-release the Xbox in the same format as a marketing gesture. Man, I must be crazy, I'm actually suggesting that MS will become an underdog.

People will want to play games on a tv, I think. So perhaps the small screen will be optional, but I think the small consoles is inevitable.
|
Microsoft should make an xbox/mp3 player/music video watcher/mobile phone thingy......yes.
|
That would be awesome, but unrealistic as of now.
|
I was watching G4 yesterday and they had graphs on times from console launch to console launch. X-box 2, if released next year, would put a 4 year span between while sony and the big N have a 5 to 6 year span.
Microsoft will not make a Microsoft X Boy(?). They were asked if they would in an interview and said no. On PSP's price: If it's $250, I'll get it and my bro will get a DS. If it goes above, they're losing a customer (me). |

Oh, and here's something I'd like to see on a console. You know how car cd players just suck up the disc without a tray? You know, you just stick it in the little crack and the cd player pulls it in? I'd love to see a console do that! :D -oddguy  |
Good idea. I love that, especially how the little rubber flaps wipe the CD as it goes in. Heh heh heh, your description of it sounded a little funny, though.

Again, speculation. But if the rumors are true, it would seem that consoles might be moving farther away from PCs instead of closer. |
The PSP is amazing from what I saw of it at E3. Of course I am somewhat bias because I got to see Advent Chidren [trailer] running on it, and it looked absolutely amazing. The PSP will support movies, games and music. So basically it will be able to do everything that ferill said, but not a mobile phone. Although Japan are already leading the world in mobile phone technology, as Before Crisis will only be playable on Japanese mobile phones, because no technology outside Japan currently would be able to support it. But back on the PSP, the quality is like watching a mini HD/digital TV. So basically anything you can get that is DVD quality and PS2 quality should run on it. I saw GTA on it as well, but I didn't get to play.
As for an Xbox handheld, does anyone remember after the launch of the Xbox, there was talk of an Xbox handheld. It was even on all the major gaming sites. If I can find a link, I'll edit my post to add it. I guess it never eventuated. :
I've heard that the PS3 won't be backwards compatible with PSOne games. I kind of hope this is true, because Square-Enix said they will consider re-making Final Fantasy VII when it is not able to be played by the latest console. So while the consoles can play the game, no remake is likely to occur. But apart from that, backwards incompatibility doesn't worry me, because it's not hard to hook up multiple consoles to your TV, just get a system switcher [which I currently have to support my multiple consoles]. You just play your new games on the newer console and use your old console for your old games. Abe Babe... |

Since when has it been called 'Xenon'? Last I heard the working title was Xbox Next, but I haven't been on the internet in a couple of days.
|
thats what i was wandering
|
Whats backwards compatibility mean?

I'm not against a handheld from Xbox..but as for an all-in-one...remember the disaster that was the N'Gage? Yikes! Frankly I'm into gaming in my living room on my comfy couch with my big TV and surround sound...so handhelds hold no draw for me personally. |

To quote a report from my site, The Community, which covers a large chunk of gaming industry (this is caled advertising you guys :D):

Something about the Phantom: :
|
Yes. There's a thread in OT somewhere about the Phantom. I guess it may be a hot seller for PC gamers, however, it's pretty pointless selling a PC to PC gamers. They already have fucking PCs they're proud of! Why would they buy it? To increase RAM space? To replace and old PC? Fucking ridiculous! Buy a new PC, it's better anyway.

Yoyoyo, i'm talking about the xbox, it could be smaller then ya cocks, it'll have a tiny tiny box and......something to do with socks the PSP its cool something decent from the sony crap pool it looks like a big ass mirror with lots of games you can play on it? so, backwards combatability yeah thats decent almost as good as human combatability you know what I mean ;) If you watch how i walk you'll think i'm a gimp cause i fell down the stairs and now i have a limp. So thats my rap about this thread and now i'll go and tread on CJ's head cause hes a prick. PEACE! out... |
