Video Game Industry Going Downhill?
Did you notice that the game lineup at E3 is mainly sequels? Just games that are destined to sell. Being an OW fan goes hand in hand with creativity, and at E3 most of the games lacked this deeply. Microsoft not publishing OW4 sends a clear message that creativity is just too risky for them. Microsoft just wants mega-money-makers and so do Sony and Nintendo by the looks of it. You know what else sells very well? Sex. Looks like games with full frontal nudity are coming. If these games become popular, you can kiss creative games goodbye and hello to sex, sequels, and sexy sequels.

I wouldn't be surprised if that happened in the future, hobo.

Crap games don't sell oddguy. People are fed up with boring linear shootemups and 3d adventure games. They want a world to interact with, a character to customize, vehicles to drive, items to collect, skills to learn, and no ending.
Games that don't offer these things are starting to be seen as lame and lacking in experience and depth. Consoletoys will eventually make way for faster and more able PCs, that will dominate the scene with the ability to mod, edit, type, and so on. The futures bright, not grim. |
Well it all depends on the market of people Micrsoft is looking for. Damm Microsoft no respect to people like Lorne who want to make creative games.
Paramiteabe... :fuzblink: |
Um. Yes they do respect people like Lorne, otherwise they wouldn't have obtained a 3 game exclusive contract would they?
|
:
I do hope they switch to PC. It's such a more capable platform - but if they continue to make their releases consoletoy exclusive I'm afraid they won't be getting my business. |
Chill. Stranger will be amazing. Then you have to realize Xbox2 is projected to be the first console out, besting PS3 by a year. The console will probably be able to hold its own against most PCs out right now. If it tanks(That seems highly unlikely) PS3 will hold the mantle. Also, is it impossible to make an innovative, compelling sequel? Hell No! Part of the reason I'm so hyped up for this year when it comes to videogames is that a lot of amazing sequels are coming out that far surpass the original in every category and have even more new tricks, add-ons and renovations. It would be great, however, if Oddworld could break the chains of its console-only contract. It could make many more sales and in that way introduce even more people to Oddworld, probably getting many loyal customers.

Me? ... Uh, why? |
Personaly I think this whole console war should get a hold fire for a few years at least!
Back in the old days it took about 6 years before the SNES was followed up by the N64, another (what?) 3 years after that? I dunno, but where is the gaming industry comming to if their going to bring out a new console every year? In 2010 there would be the Xbox ultra 4 (Being named ultra after 10 sucueals to the normal Xbox) and I would still be playing my normal X box 3 becouse I don't have the freggin money to buy a new console every year! Let alone the game's for it. Not for these prices! It would be a verry stupid move if OWI is going to give out their new game's on the Xbox 2... they will lose bussines over it, I can tell you that. Cuz im not buying the Xbox 2 when it come's out, and neither will half the gaming population who have just spend their savings on this Xbox. |

 There...feel better? :
Anyway, the point I was trying to make with this thread was to say that creative games are being fought against, while games with sexual nature thrown in the mix are likely to be popular. Is this good? Will it turn the future of gaming into easy to please horn-dogs? -oddguy |

Man it really pisses me off when I'm trying to be serious but the other guy just wants me to laugh at his joke - he thinks that I take it "seriously" or something. I mean really, why can't he just fuck off and let me have a serious discussion? OK guys here is a tip to avoid being a lamer; tell your joke, but don't ffs expect everyone to change the tone of the entire thread just to give you their approval of your turning a decent thread into a spammy joke contest. |
I don't mind in-thread jokes as long as they don't create another topic of their own. I hate threads with dual topics. It's so darn confusing. I remember somebody saying on a thread that clones don't have soles. Well, Mac came by and was like, "Dear Lord! How will they walk on rocky surfaces?!" Stuff like that is good fun.
-oddguy |
Yeah but Oddguy, nobody wants stuff like that, they wan't people to take them seriously rather than make jokes out of their spelling mistakes.
It always ends in "That wasn't what I mean't" "Yeah I know, I know, I was just having a joke, but you clearly don't get it"... Then you end up with a flame war. |
I'm sorry death but I must disagree... witty intelligent sharp humour punctuating serious topic bases IS what a forum is all about!
Forums are frequented (generally) by pretty intelligent people (unlike chatrooms.. oooh controversial!) and as such we generally appreciate ironicle or abstract lines of thought... ie WE CAN COPE WITH THE ODD JOKE NOW AND AGAIN! As intelligent people we are often very self aware... achingly so in some cases... hense low self esteem and insecurities... hense Hobo's lament at people suposedly not laughing at his joke! We just need to appreciate the importance of humour and reassurance here... Anyhooo... I'll shut up now and this tread can get back on topic... If anyone wants to discuss this point further make a new thread if you think its relevant if not rant in the spam thread! |
Clairebear, not giving recognition to jokes is exactly the same thing as diverting the attention from someones well thought out serious comment by making a joke over one single spelling mistake - either way, you're not even paying attention to what the person has to say, and nobody ever will, he has just wasted his time and brainpower typing that up. And that infuriates me.
There is a fucking time and place for humour, a serious debate is NOT it. Also, if you put something in the wrong place, why should we pay any attention to it at all? |
:
I'm slightly dyslexic... it wasn't detected until I got to Uni by one of the Primary Ed teachers who did a PHD in the subject! it wasn't picked up because i was always in the top ability set for everything... my teachers thought i was just lazy probably! So those kinds of jokes... Tsk-tsk-tsk! Hobo... bad bad bad Hobo! No cookie for you! Real humour related to the topic or "serious debate" (play on words... making fun of a point of view... poking fun at the debate topic) is acceptable... anyone who is a memeber of a half decent debating society knows that in a real debate striking your apponent with a witty comment... rallies the audiance and throws he/she off balance! Recognising the joke (if there wasn't the stupid 10character limit) is easier elsewhere... a simple ROTFLMAO, LOL or just :D can be added by those reading... or the same can be aded to the top of those who are actually posting's responses... its just good manners... innit? |
Jokes are perfectly acceptable, unless they throw a really good debate off the rails, and place a completely different train on the track.
And posts containing no other content except a "ROFLMAO" or "LOL" are unacceptable. The whole idea of a forum is sharing your views and opinions - it's about content. If you aren't adding content then you shouldn't add at all. However, I don't see any problems with adding a "ROFLMAO" or "LOL" at the top of a post where you share your opinions and actually add content. |
:
In a forum with no karma (kisses or kicks!) rating for posters there is no other way of showing agreement or disagreement other than something like... "ROTFLMAO... I agree!" or " :D me too!" or "total bollocks!" That is opinion... no matter how limited the content!! And besides some posters may only have the confidence at first to reply to posts with a short sentence of agreement when they first register... deny them that right to find their feet and they may never post any "content" at all!! |
Yes but, clairebear, if you can't EXPLAIN or give REASONS for your opinion, then you shouldn't post them.
WHY don't you agree? Why do you think it's bollocks? etc. etc. etc. Just posting an "I agree" is very very arrogant. It's like "people don't need reasons for my opinion, since what I beleive is so important and everyone just loves it regardless". |
:
Like I said... its an important "training aid" one day it may be "I agree... Yeah cool" the next it may be "I disagree with you entirely Master Death and my reasons are threefold.... blah de blah" You can't force everyone to post lengthy posts when they may not feel confident to do it... no new posters + no fresh threads/ideas = NO OW FORUM! |
The Chill is directed at people who foresee a gaming apocalypse where innovation dies and boobie games fill up the vacuum. Simply not going to happen. I know this is a small sample but in Watertown a book shop is on the verge of closing because it sells the occasional porn. That would be Book World. The ratio of clean to dirty books is easily 20 or 30 to one but because it has couple of Penthouses and the like its totally getting the royal screwjob. Now imagine if a game with full frontal nudity comes out! The community would go MESHUGGAH! Wal-Mart edits off entire Wu-Tang Clan songs, do you really think they'll sell an Adult-rated game? Christ, they don't even sell Maxims without hassles anymore! What major retailer is going to want to take the image of being a purveyor of digital filth? Shopko? No bloody way. Radio Shack? Not an effin' chance. Every single major retailer's bottom line would be hurt dramatically if they sold those bullshit games.

And there you go again with this age crap. Really will you cut that out? I'm suprised we even let you say the word "age" at all now after your little episode when you first got here. |
:
Easy way to take the heat off I guess! Yes I've made a few frickin mistakes but rubbing my frickin NOSE IN IT 24/7 ain't gonna change anything other than making you feel superior! Like I said the rules are there but it doesn't mean everyone has to agree with them... I'm voicing an opinion. |
Then voice it in a way that doesn't break our rules.
Thanks. ;) |
Death, must you critise everything?
