MO Vs. AO + AE: The Debate.
Hi.
Which gaming type do you prefer and why? Awkward camera angles, worse graphics, and Xbox exclusivity? Or lush, diverse backgrounds, challenging problems, adrenaline rushing chases, and intrigueing storylines? Please remember to state WHY you you made that choice, and what you think of the ones you didn't choose... EDIT: Oh crap I put my topic in the wrong place. Could a mod please move this? Thanks... |
i think this is for GD

ahum after 5 replies I will be ther first one who will actuall talk about the topic....
I prefer the Abe Games... especially because of their ambiances, they are for more Dark, and that's what I prefer |
Simple: I prefer the Abe games for all the reason mentioned above: intricate plot, diverse and inspiring environments and backgrounds, lush sound effects and graphics, greater difficulty level, characters that were actually ALIVE, the darkness and spiritual presence, enemies that actually seemed threatening, lack of cartooniness, natives that had some innocence about them, puzzles and problems that actually brought satisfaction upon completion...

Well, like just about everyone else I love all the Abe games for mainly the same reasons as Max and Xav. I really loved AO for its darkness and I loved AE because it introduced us deeper into Oddworld and what it would be like there (i.e- MOM news, the more intracate locations, etc.).

The buffer system is a lot better, but sometimes you still get caught on random, and in some cases, invisible things, plus when you're running along a thin platform, it jolts you down into the dangers below, which is irritating. The 'recognition' system fails miserably too. It is nice not having to align perfectly with the vending machines whenever you want an Expresso, but when it comes to picking up Mudokons, it's one heck of a hassle. Sometimes you'll jump and all the Muds will turn round to face you, which is not the easiest way to pick them up, sometimes Abe will walk halfway across the room to go and have another Expresso. |
I prefer all of the games. Even MO, but I don't have it yet! :D
|
Can I ask what you mean by "buffer system"? I didn't think that game had a buffer system, or at least, I can't see where it would use it...
|
Buffer system, helps guide Abe and Munch without them walking into walls. I know I complained about it, but it's really very good. I think the best place to notice it is the Boiler Room level. Drink some invisible, go to pick up a sleeping Slig and run back towards the crane. The corridor that leads from the area full of explosives - run straight down it, and without moving the control stick, Abe should swerve to the right to avoid walking into the wall. Genious.
|
That isn't buffering, that is clipping physics. It's still good though, that abe doesn't run into walls. Hehe, I love blind muds! :D
Buffers store information. It reads info off of a disc, puts it in the buffer and then gives it to the computer when it asks for it. If the buffer overflows, the game slows down and lags, and if it has less info than the computer wants or needs, then it has an underrun and crashes. This is when "viods" open up in the game and your character falls into nowhere, because the correct landscape detail was not loaded into the buffer before the level loaded. The same thing happens with typing, writing CD's, viewing images and listening to audio. |
Yeah!!! Debate is in!!!
|
Ah, my mistake, then. Well, I had seen it called a buffer system with reference to what I was talking about, but now I know better.
Debate is in? This is a discussion forum, no? |

Personally I like MO best! Maybe cause it's 3D but it's just so cool! But I wish it was longer and I do realize that it could have been cooler. But I like all of them! |
My taste in games are in how good a design a character is given.
Take the early concepts for Abe (4-finger), for example. His hand looked kind of like an Iguanodon, with the huge thumb and tiny pinky finger, and his reptillian appearance with a feather topknot reminded me of the bird-dinosaurs, halfway from dinosaur to bird (evolutionarily speaking). I imagine that the Mudokon race hasn't finished fully evolving quite yet. I also liked how the Eyelids continuously display facial emotion without the help of eyebrows, i.e. with most characters in the game. And then came Latimare Munch. I thought: "He's a beefed-up cane toad with a bug-zapper in his head. So what?" It wasn't until I took the time to really look at his anatomy that I got a good understanding of what he really was. The large area between the eyes reminded me of the forhead (Melon) of a cetacean. The eyes, which elipse off the head, are a great asset for any animal (especially an aquatic one) because it gives him the ability to see in all directions. His jaw is double-hindged, to allow prey in large groups to be scooped up. And the five fins on his head were not only used for directional purposed, but display emotions with little speech. I also think that his head port goes deeper in his skull, probably a long rod of circutry attached to different areas of his brain. Munch spawned many character designs for me. The first was a Star Wars character and looked cross-bred with Ed from Ed, Edd n Eddy. This, of corse was before I knew the boundarys for Copyright infringement. So, I understand where you guys are coming from. Munch seems kind of cartoony (but to me it still retains a morbid atmosphere that Oddworld tries to keep us in contact with), but I feel that if I ever DO get Munch's Oddysee, I will be as happy with it as I was with Abe's games. |
well, abe games...no furthur comment
|
I understand about the camera angles you guys are talking about in MO... I didn't like it when I wanted to look in a certain position, the the view just bounced away from it or wouldn't go near it so I couldn't see properly.
Despite that, I really enjoyed the whole game. The movies are still great and I think Munch has kinda added a new side to Oddworld gaming.... might be a little different, but that can be a good thing! And those fuzzles are darn cuties.:fuzwink: |
I like them all, but I liked how in AO/AE you had to search so much to find the secrets. It was far too easy to find the couple of hidden, if you can even call them hidden, mudokons in MO. I do like how you can earn FMV's in MO though. Very cool.
|
Yeah, I guess the movie thing is cool! I don't like the evil fog in MO!:flames:
|
Isn't there another thread exactly like this? "things i missed in mo"
|
"I dunno, I never thought about it?" *Looks at gabiar*
|
I know this is slightly ignorant, but I prefer Abe's games.
Why? Because I don't have an Xbox but do have a PC. (Also cause I still haven't bothered getting the perfect endings) |
I dont know why you wouldn't be bothered, MO is a really easy game.

AO, it's simply the best. It has that unique dark atmosphere... Scary-- I might say.
....yeah... |
Munch seems to having a tough time, I think MO was great because it was different to Abe games, and that's the point I think. Two different characters with two different oddysees. The Movie sequences were great. And I missed it when I finished it, I even dreamt there were more levels!
|
I do often dream of Oddworld.
I like how in AO/AE a lot of the time you had to hide in the shadows. I think this was going to be implemented in MO, but never happend. Remember that Sligtoss movie where Abe throws that Slig into the recycler? If you watch it again, you'll notice that Abe was hiding in the shadows while the Slig was lighting himself a cigerette. Very cool. |
I have to agree on the issue of somewhat bad camara angles....that got to be a bit frustrating during game play in MO....I have not yet completed the PC versions of AO & AE so it's not fair for me to make a final judgement about which is better....can't wait to do so since I upgraded the graphics card on my computer..... but I see things that I like about each version..... one thing I can say for sure, the Oddworld sreies is one of my favorite games....Thxx OWI....

Welcome to the forums.
|
As far as story goes, MO has a better story and more emotion than the other 2 games. Of course this is all OPINION and does not say which game is better.
But I can see where OWI is going.....what they have done and where they want to go. AO was a strange game.....odd to say the least. It's structured around tradition 2D platforms, but it has very good art, fantasy art that cannot be beat...only matched, and the tasks you must do in the game, while becoming familiar over several attempts, leaves the player enthusiastic in coming back to the same task . And you have such interesting characters......odd as they may be, you feel for them, so you will be ready to get them across that pit or meat saw on the first try next time because oyu can't possibly see them cut into little piece and fly all over the place (though these physics do look cool and don't get old themselves) The character design is Oddworld's strong point....that and the art. The characters are the best characters I have ever come across. (granted I dont play games too much anymore, but from what I do play, Oddworld is the best) When I first saw the opening movie for Munch, I was moved. I felt so bad for the gabbits and for Munch. That really never happened before from a video game. (No, sorry, none of the Final Fantasy games really moved me.....just had to stretch after a while ;) ) The dark, deviant art left with the 3D conversion, which was a disappointment, but the brightly colored world and cleaner factories still offered awe. The griminess of the 2D games may return later on, but that griminess is most suitable to a 2D backdrop.....like a painting. The art in AO and AE were paintings of grime. The art in MO were painitngs that got a 3D face lift and became art with depth. It's really a matter of opinion, but I liked the 2D grime better than the 3D crispness. I hope OWI can find a way to make the 3D crispness as grimy as possible in the future. And the motif of Oddworld of greedy industrialists fighitng fanatical environmentalists parrallels todays world all too well. PLus you have the mysterious "Khanzumers" who are not yet revealed. They are the drive behind the industry.......Abe is the leader of the movment against the industrial force. The world of Oddworld is a fantasy world, but one that is modeled ofter our own world, and it's a big allegory that really makes you think in terms of our own technologically advancing world. so whihc do I like better? AO and AE, just because I'm grimy :D |
I like them all but I prefer AO and AE because its so inspireing with their incredable envirorments. I love painting stuff like that.
Here is a question what do you think of the design for Steef? Big difference from what we saw before. In many ways it reminds me of a sort Oddworld slash greek mythical creature in which Steef is. |
Thxx for the welcome "Death".....nice to be here.....
|
I like AO and AE better. Why?? Well, Mo was a bit disapointing.
I think its too funny, and that doesn't fit in oddworld. Oddworld games should be dark, scary and exiting, like in Abe's games. I just hate that BOING sound that comes from Munch when he jumps. And i noticed those clips with Abe throwing the slig in the recycler, was this supposed to be in the game??? Did they cut out very much, out of MO?? In that case: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! |
:
That was because Abe is very vunerable, and Sligs are very trigger-happy. Alcar... |
