Forum Statuses: A question of authority?

Hi everyone

I think it might be a good idea to let everyone know (and I wanna know too) how the status system works. Now, we all know that everyone starts off as a slurg, and at the moment I am a slig slacker. But what comes next? And how does it change? And what comes after that? I think maybe a list is in order, do it something like this:

Status: How you get to that status:
slurg. register.

Something like that anyway, so we can all see how it works...

If you look at the thread above this one its there

http://www.oddworldforums.net/forums...&threadid=6164

Well here it is by the way...

Alcar 05-08-2003 07:25 AM

The ranks used to be secret, so that getting a new one was more exciting, or special. But they were published some time ago in that thread happyguy936 posted.

The ranks are periodically changed, usually when a new Oddworld game comes out. So as to have the ranks updated with current and new Oddworld creatures.

And actually, if Xavier weren't a Moderator we'd have to create a new rank just for him! As he has over 7000 posts

Alcar...

Reese Charles 05-08-2003 08:07 AM

And what about the ranks that don't appear in the normal ones, do you guys give those out as special merits etc.?

Alcar 05-08-2003 08:24 AM

Exactly :)

Ooo, that sounds very cool. Perhaps mine would be OWF Game Author. Actually, I dunno what mine would be. Bah, oh well, thanks for telling me Alc.

Reese Charles 05-08-2003 09:25 AM

Baah! I am going to have to double post AGAIN! It won't let me edit the same post twice. Oh well.

:

[in a post Abe Babe wrote:[/i] A member should never try to spam just to try and get a higher post count, as it's not the number of posts you have that is relevant, but it's all about being part of the OWF community and making it a great place for all.
Relating to the above, because it relates to this thread, here is some advice: In my old forums, when people wanted to make their post count higher, me and the other mods encouraged them to do "Forum Rounds". This involves going to every single thread and posting a comment on each one (not posting spam or nothing at all, but adding their opinion on a matter). The result is a really high post count, and subscription to every single thread, so you can go back and post some more. This all adds up quite nicely.

Hope that makes a difference to people...

Reese

PS: I just thought of a good custom rank, OWF Double Poster LOL!

Facsimile 05-08-2003 10:12 AM

Awwww I love you guys.

By the way, I think that after you get the highest rank, you should get a custom one, that you can choose yourself but Alcar can see if appropriate.

Reese Charles 05-08-2003 10:14 AM

Yeah thats a good idea. After all, after giving the forum that much good service, you would have thought you would be entitled to some sort of reward...

Reese

EDIT: PS: Facsimile do you play LoD, or just D2? If so, whats your battle.net name?

Cloverfield 05-08-2003 11:52 AM

Technically anyone can get a custom title ... all they have to do is ask. ;) And if we agree that they are a good member (i.e. they're not a constant spammer) ... then we don't have a problem putting it in place for them.

Abe Babe...

Reese Charles 05-08-2003 12:00 PM

Hehe!

Abe Babe, you are now going to have a PM from every single member that reads this thread! :D Great news that your not really that bothered about it though, I think everyone here that makes a valuable contribution should have something in return that identifies him/her for his/her usefulness. I wouldn't mind a custom rank with something along the lines of "OWF Fan Game Expert". That would fit me nicely, as I am currently maintaining quite a popular thread of that nature (which I plan to keep going for ages and ages). But I would like to think that I have worked for that title, at least.

As i think that this thread would make quite a good place of disscussion for some ideas of new ranking systems, I wish to ask everybody: What ideas do you have (if any) about the OWF ranking system?

It's added. :) Although you have only been a member for a short time, you have already contributed a lot to the forums. I've been reading your post over in GD, and you certainly have some awesome ideas ... not to mention that you are very talented too.

Abe Babe...

Reese Charles 05-08-2003 12:25 PM

Wow thanks, I'm stoked! I gained an enormous grin when I heard my aol telling me I have mail, and then seeing my rank read OWF Fan Game Expert. Hehe, thanks.

Thankyou very, very much! I am so glad you appreciate my work, there will definately be more to come...

Yours Immensely gratefully, Reese

PS: Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou, thankyou, thankyou, thankyou! :D

Hobo 05-08-2003 03:39 PM

I'm quite happy without a custom title. Because eaqch rank gained makes me feel that much happier.

Question for Mod's :

Is there anyway of finding out who has the highest post rate??

Reese Charles 05-08-2003 03:42 PM

I quite like it, I think I will enjoy being OWFs resident game-maker...
I feel like I now have a genuine purpose here.

Reese

Hobo 05-08-2003 03:44 PM

But a standerd rank shows just how much you've contributed. I know a custom title sort of does the same thing. But it's more impressive knowing that they got 5 stars by being dedicated, rather than being liked.

Reese Charles 05-08-2003 03:49 PM

Well, yes, I would wish I had done the same if I hadn't already spent 5 years climbing up the ranks of other forums...
But as you can probably imagine, I would rather be liked than make an excess of posts. I think it shows more to make such an impression so early on than it does to make such a large contribution of a long period of time...

I dunno, maybe I am weird like that, but to me its quality not quantity, although of course I respect the contribution you have made, as without people like you threads like mine would be unread...

Reese

Hobo 05-08-2003 03:58 PM

Wow, i can see why people like you. You have a way with words. *Is hypnotised*

Reese Charles 05-08-2003 04:00 PM

Thankyou very much :). I like to think I can communicate in a rational manner...

Changing my question *glares at xav for having 11+ posts a day*
Which NON-MOD has the highest post rate...........

Reese Charles 05-08-2003 04:45 PM

thats easy:

just find someone who has all 6 stars without promotion or custom ranks...

Hobo 05-08-2003 04:47 PM

no i meant posts/day.................

Majic 05-08-2003 11:59 PM

Thats pretty easy, except it maily depends on the timing. Check the profiles of people who have recently been posting quite a bit. For example, it used to be Kaimana, at another point it was Morphius, as a whole though, I'd say Xavier has the highest and steadiest.

Reese Charles 05-09-2003 04:14 AM

Xavier has over 7000 posts, as he has had to deal with masses of picture requests. I also have the same problem, I get lots of people asking me for pictures as I have a large archive of screenshots, I plan to put it all on a bunch of CDs and hand them out to worth Oddworld fans. Still needs to build up though. But thats off topic...

Reese

Joshy 05-09-2003 05:03 AM

I think the highest post counter per day is reese now...

(15.86 posts per day)

Reese Charles 05-09-2003 05:04 AM

Hehehehehehe! I am taking over! MWAHAHAHAHAHA! :D

Alcar 05-09-2003 05:19 AM

That's just because you've posted quite a lot since you've been here :)

About the custom title, yes you've deserved it! And you're also the first member to get a title THAT quickly!

Alcar...

Reese Charles 05-09-2003 05:22 AM

Wow cool. :)

I have a postcount of something like 16 posts a day now. lol!

Joshy 05-09-2003 05:30 AM

You're our newest spammer:D

Jking :p

Reese Charles 05-09-2003 05:47 AM

Hehehe! :D

Joshy 05-09-2003 05:51 AM

wow nearly 17 post per day now....

Got to catch up!!!! hmmmmm i need to post 3760 post to raise my post per day to 17..... well better get a move on:D

Reese Charles 05-09-2003 06:02 AM

Well, anything is possible. But don't simply do that to raise your post count. I didn't intend to get that many posts/day, it just happened. The highest I have ever had in a forum was 298 posts per day. That was on a day when I subscribed to every thread in the entire forum, and posted my thoughts on each one, great fun but it clogged my inbox...

Reese

Joshy 05-09-2003 06:05 AM

298 post per day...... then you must have alot of opionion:p

LOD. But I don't - ahem - can't play on battle.net. Apparantly game designers don't want people playing their games for free.

Reese Charles 05-09-2003 10:22 AM

That doesn't make any sense. So you have a hacked copy or something?

You bad bad boy!

Reese

Joshy 05-09-2003 12:10 PM

wats wrong with hacked copies? its way cheaper... heh

Reese Charles 05-09-2003 12:12 PM

the only thing I have a problem with, is that if someone like me made a game, and someone like you went and duped it, I wouldn't get any money for my hard work. See what I am sayin?

It's not my fault I can't get a job!
I know it sounds weird but I feel bad everytime I copy myself a music CD and like it. But the only thing I find bad about copied games is sometimes you can't play on the net or something.

Reese Charles 05-09-2003 12:24 PM

Its a good job that my Oddworld game will be free!

I feel bad about riping copies of software, ie: PhotoShop and Paint Shop Pro.

But then, I realise that I'm under 18 and can't be prosecuted in an adult court of law ;)
