Birds

What is the Significance of the birds on the oddworld games.
I know they represent health, portals and shryskull powerups but is their any history to go with.:fuzconf:

Wil 10-21-2002 08:49 AM

Well firstly you have to understand that Mudokons evolved from birds, and share a very symbiotic and spiritual relationship with them. As for why we see them so often in the games, it's just the underlining of Oddworld. You know, like that red bag in The League of Gentlemen Series 3.

M.O.M 10-21-2002 08:54 AM

they evolved from birds? tell me more, i'm interested.

I dont watch the league of gentlemen

Wil 10-21-2002 09:01 AM

Well, they evolved from Birds. That's pretty much it. They still have lots of features left over from that stage in their existence, such as lightweight skulls and feathers.

I dont watch the league of gentlemen
Schade.

M.O.M 10-21-2002 09:02 AM

head feathers

So thats why sum Muds have head feathers and arm feathers

Wil 10-21-2002 09:06 AM

Yes. It's also why they don't appear to have teeth, and why their mouths can sometimes look like beaks. Although have you noticed that Mudokons evolved from birds to lizards, while on Earth evolution went the other way round (according to scientists, just in case you don't believe in evolution).

M.O.M 10-21-2002 09:07 AM

birds to lizards???????

Wil 10-21-2002 09:10 AM

Yes, Mudokons are very lizard-like. Although they have skin instead of scales and primate-like toes, I'm positive they're really cold blooded.

'Mammals', 'lizards' and 'insects' are such broad terms when talking about Oddworld.

M.O.M 10-21-2002 09:12 AM

strange but interesting theory, but really if their cold blodded they would have to spend a lot of time just doing nothing in the sun to get warm

brewmaster 10-21-2002 10:07 AM

I always thought Abe looked like a bird (sort of) but I never thought he evolved from one.

paramiteabe 10-21-2002 10:21 AM

Hmm I alweys thought Mudokins evolved from fish like creatures. They remind me of a fish by their mouths and bug eyes. Just like Glukkons could of evolved from some sort of Oddworld type octopus. And Vykkers remind me of crabs or some kind of shrimp or lobstar. I alweys thought races of Oddworld originated out of the sea which could explan why everyone wants to eat each other. But that bird theory is pretty cool.Maybe it was a combination of both?

Xavier 10-21-2002 03:33 PM

max, sorry if I didn't understood you very well but Mud's do have teeth... there is even one with a gold teeth in the uyi video clip

Wil 10-21-2002 03:51 PM

Really? Can I see it?

Xavier 10-21-2002 03:57 PM

well... Alector, said it in one of her posts, so I believe it's true, I haven't got the CD yet:(

M.O.M 10-21-2002 04:00 PM

its a good song

Wil 10-21-2002 04:00 PM

Have you got a blueprint of the Mudokon skeleton, Xavier? We could have a look at that. Or should this be in the picture request? It is related to this topic exclusivly.

Xavier 10-21-2002 04:02 PM

no I don't... sorry
and this was the right place to ask for.

I'm still searching:fuzwink:

M.O.M 10-21-2002 04:30 PM

That could help

**WARNING: SPLITTING HAIRS AHEAD** Actually, both birds and lizards evolved from a common ancestor that had some bird qualities and some lizard qualities. You can't really call the ancestor (be it a dinosaur or another creature) a lizard or a bird

TheKhanzumer 10-21-2002 10:05 PM

Mud's have teeth!

Yes Max, mudokons have teeth. I'm a bit shocked you didn't already know that. And yes, before you point it out, the mudokon skull sketch doesn't have teeth. I assume they fell out.

Proof (look closely at Alf):

Oddsville 10-21-2002 10:57 PM

Aw, common guys haven't you seen that one video of the Mud head talking? I was gonna reply to this earlier but damn MSN kept freezing! Ok, like Khanz said Muds do have teeth. They have two herbavorish/buck teeth at the front of the upper jaw. The other set is some small (and again herbavorish) teeth segmented all over the bottom jaw. Add a small gizard somewhere above the stomache and the food is pretty much left to goo when it reaches the stomache.

Mac the Janitor 10-22-2002 12:17 AM

Yeah, the teeth are also quite noticeable in Abe's gamespeak on MO, too...

Xavier 10-22-2002 03:26 AM

Oddsville... no, I never saw it.
I have some screens of it. but I never saw the video
where can we find it?

M.O.M 10-22-2002 06:16 AM

stitchlibs

going of the subject of teeth slightly, Why is abe's mouth stitched up

TheKhanzumer 10-22-2002 12:07 PM

stitches

Abe's mouth was stitched up because he supposedly talked to much as a kid. But we all know the real reason was because they didn't want him chanting and discovering his gift.

M.O.M 10-22-2002 03:36 PM

i actually didnt know that!

Xavier 10-22-2002 03:47 PM

that's why we have got some specialists here to tell you:

M.O.M 10-22-2002 03:50 PM

Xavier 10-22-2002 04:18 PM

M.O.M 10-22-2002 04:25 PM

No, you thinking of 'If humans evolved from apes, why are there still apes?'. Birds evolved from lizards, in particular, dinosaurs. True, between being dinosaurs and being proper birds they would not be classified as either (although I'm sure some nit-picky scientists will try to do that), but those un-classifiable creatures evolved from lizards.

No, but I know the one you mean.

Yes Max, mudokons have teeth. I'm a bit shocked you didn't already know that.
Thank the Great Mother Odd I have you guys. :D

Interesting, neither lizards nor birds have teeth. :S

TheKhanzumer 10-22-2002 09:33 PM

lizards have teeth

Wow, I get to correct Max twice in the same topic!

Lizards do have teeth. I have never heard of a lizard without teeth. Iguanas have teeth, gila monsters have teeth, chameleons have teeth, komodo dragons have teeth...

You are correct in saying that birds (to the best of my knowledge) don't have teeth.

M.O.M 10-23-2002 05:57 AM

Glukkon killer 11-03-2002 06:49 AM

I always wondered about the birds in the game :fuzconf:
