The Shrink 02-26-2002 07:00 PM

Hey yeah. Maybe there is a bit of inspiration for Abe's character right there.

you never read the ancient testament?
the first Profet of God

ODDBODD 02-27-2002 10:45 AM

yes i have but im just stating that it doesn't make me think. Oddworld has based most of their names on modern things.

Xavier 02-27-2002 10:48 AM

hmmm yes but Abe is not a "modern" character he's more a spiritual character
maybe a little conection

ODDBODD 02-27-2002 10:51 AM

the thing is, i find no connection with munch and the modern times?? same with gabbits.

MojoMan220 02-27-2002 11:01 AM

I understand Xavier. I just couldn't understand what you meant by that. And yes Abe is very spiritual. Hmmm, it makes me think.

sodd 02-27-2002 04:46 PM

Hahaha

you guys are all such fools...

Ahh well.. it's a stage in the development of each human being..

Cool Paramite 02-27-2002 04:58 PM

I think it really has a connection with Abraham Lincoln.

Xavier 02-28-2002 02:05 PM

hehe hat like that are allready on oddworld (chroniclers, valet slig)

ODDBODD 03-01-2002 09:02 AM

another hat that would look cool is a cap... abe will look cool with and spray can in one hand, a smoking drill hanging out of his jeans with shells all over the floor and flipping the bird!

Wil 03-01-2002 06:38 PM

Oops

The Abe character is based strongly around Abraham Lincoln, the U.S. President who was strongly anti-slavery. Sorry.

sodd 03-01-2002 08:19 PM

Abe is an abbrivation for Abraham..

Abraham from the BIBLE!

Altho I am not religeous, I do know a fare share

and can tell you that Abe was not created to resemble Abe LIncoln.. Altho Lincoln had the same intentions as Abraham, any resemblence is a coincidence..

In the bible, Abraham frees the slaves from Egypt I believe....

Abe's clothes (that little piece of clothe) are also linked to religeous meaning, as the loin clothe was featured in the bible, even worn by Jesus himself.

There are many other resemblences from Oddworld to religeon.. They call it symbolism...

MojoMan220 03-01-2002 08:34 PM

Good point sodd.

It was Moise....

Dequibenzo 03-02-2002 04:07 PM

I still don't know how to quote, but Xavier, you said that Abe is not modern, he's spiritual. Since when is being spiritual not being modern?
And, yes, Moses was the one who freed the slaves, not Abraham. Abraham's the guy who was gonna kill his son because god told him to, but then god sent a goat or something to stop him... I don't know, God in the old testement changes his mind a lot. Whoa, never mind, forget I said that. Don't want to incite a riot.

Ok, but I don't think Abe is realy modern, look at the Mudokons villages, all made with wood... not realy modern

ODDBODD 03-03-2002 09:56 AM

modern... pfft check out the threads.. hardly modern

Xavier 03-03-2002 10:55 AM

is that modern ?
I don't think so

MojoMan220 03-03-2002 11:02 AM

Wow, Xavier, I look all over the net for Oddworld pics... but I have never seen any of the images you have shown anywhere. You have to show me some more images, where did you get all of them?

Xavier 03-03-2002 12:35 PM

you allready said that for max, no?
are you complexed to be only in the present ? lol

Dequibenzo 03-09-2002 02:31 AM

Oh, time traveling gurus, secret pictures, who cares about boring things like that? We need to get back on track with our horribly underinformed rambling debate on character symbolism. Ugh.
I agree, it's probably Abe Lincoln. For one thing, he is known often as "Abe", while Abraham from the bible is not. He is called "Abraham", not Abe, traditionally. If Abe the Mudokon was short for something, sure, but it probably isn't, considering that other mudokons have short names too (like Alf, and Sam). So, yeah, since Abraham Lincoln is known for freeing the slaves, is called Abe, and is much more modern, and also considering that Lorne and many other members of OWI are Buddhists, I would think that Abe the Mudokon is named after him, not Abraham from the bible, who has nothing to do with slaves or loinclothes (WHat the heck were you talking about there?) and is not that great a rolemodel for a hero really. Hate to burst your bubble.

Xavier 03-09-2002 09:10 AM

ok It come probably from lincoln
your right

Wil 03-10-2002 10:03 AM

Ha!

Breaking news:

Lorne Lanning announces titular Abe character based on Abraham Simpson!!

I couldn't resist it. Sorry.

I think people search too much for biblical connections in Oddworld. 'Exoddus' is another popular bore - it must have come from the Bible, surely! Well, actually, it's a word in the English language, and don't call me Shirley.

I'd like some connections with Celtic Legends.

Xavier 03-10-2002 11:46 AM

HEHEHE

Okay I will try to stop relating evrything with the bible

Gabbit 03-10-2002 04:19 PM

:fuzvamp: I CANT ARGUE THAT ABE IS NOT LIKE ABERHAME LINCOLN BUT YEAH THERE ARE MANY THINGS IN COMMON BEWTWEEN ABE AND LICOLN HeHe.:fuzblink:

BiddaMD 04-04-2002 09:57 AM

Abe Lincoln didn't free his own people....he freed slaves, Africans. Abe is like a Revolutionary leader of some sort, a Che Guerva type. Abe saves his own people....and others but particurally his own. Liberation man, Uprising, not upper class freeing the little guy.

Dequibenzo 04-04-2002 09:34 PM

So... his name should be Moses. But it isn't, it's Abe, and if they named him after anybody, I would think it would be Abraham Lincoln. It doesn't have to be a perfect match, just a little similar to warrant being an omage of any sort.

BiddaMD 04-05-2002 08:51 PM

About Abe's name....maybe the developers wanted to give players an image of an average, nice guy. Abe doesn't have to mean Abe Lincoln, jumping to conclusions like that just confuses the reality. I think Abe is just the perfect name for this shmuck of a hero, nothing more, nothing less.

Plus, Max said so...

oddguy 999 04-06-2002 02:10 AM

I agree that Abraham Lincon is probly the origin of Abes name.

However the Mudukons have links to many religons... Maybe by coincidence... Maybe because OWI drawwed from a wide selection of religons... And maybe its because it was focused on one religon but so many popular religons follow the same formula.

It seems to me that Budisum is a big influence... Harmany with nature, Karma, Zen energy (Spoce) , Chanting, Meditation, Rencarnation (when you die in the game), and even the clasic Mudukon fether (hair) stile.

Although the Christains and Jews also could be a influence... Both where at stages in their history denied of fredom. Also they have a beleaf in the after life (the werdos, etc.) and souls being seperate from bodys (possestion, etc.)... Plus Jesus rose from the dead after 3 days (when you die in the game).

...Also Im not sure but I think that the Abraham in the bible was supposs to be the father of the Jewish race. (I dont see a link to abe)
