Lord of the rings

did any of you see lord of the rings yet? (the real life one) if you did what did you think of it, was it corny or was it a good movie. i lovedit. if you ask me it was one of the best movies i have evr sceen

Lampion 12-27-2001 11:31 PM

I intend to see it next week, when the movie arrives here in my town. I've only heard about Tolkien's trilogy a couple of years ago, so I'm not a die-hard fan of his books. I finished Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King yesterday (I simply loved it), so I think I'm prepared to see the film.

Besides the production pictures, and images from sets and characters, all I've seen so far, from the movie was its Trailer, and its few seconds of amazing shots and images made me stare in awe, without even blinking my eyes. I just can't wait anymore, but I will for at least another week... :(

In time, as a newbie fan, I thought that Richard was one of the middle names of Mr. Tolkien, but now I know that his name is John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. :)

An interesting thought: while reading LOTR, many times something sounded familiar to me, things like names, races, places, many of them I've seen in other books, movies and videogames. I could see that Tolkien's universe has inhabited or influenced almost every fantasy book or movie created since LOTR was published, in the mid-50's decade.

Now, the movie set a new standard to fantasy cinema, as The Matrix did to sci-fi films.

Woo hoo, I JUST got back from seeing it, and let me tell you.. it's mediocre. I mean, it's not the 'movie to end all movies' like alot of people are making it seem like. The action scenes are great, and while a few are VERY corny, most are well written/directed. If you've read the book, you'll know what to expect, but even if you haven't it explains it a little. The acting is pretty well, even though I can't STAND the Hobbit's accents (Blimey!) Besides all that, it's a pretty good movie, but still the best part of the entire time for me at the movie theator was seeing the preview for the new Austin Powers movie.
"Interviewer: Sir? Don't you hate it when people try to do Austin Powers impersonations?
Jay: Yeah baby!
Interviewer: Oh behave!" that was from Clerks: The animated series.. but it was still pretty funny.

abe22 12-28-2001 08:24 AM

Yeah I have seen it I like the killing parts and the graphics were good but the storyline wasn't the best I was exspecting more. I don't think they should have made three though how long does it take to finish a movie the two kids were at the place and then I see directed by why didn't they keep going it would of took 3 days to finish but still. I also thought it went to long. :D

•[cyrus]• 12-28-2001 11:06 AM

I just saw it yesterday.... the ending of it was corney cuz the LORD OF THE RING is a triligy..... It was good... It was the HOBBIT___ Hobbit is another name for Halflings...a human race but smaller.

Silversnow 12-28-2001 01:36 PM

I just loved that movie. In the matter of fact, it was the only movie I've ever seen that don't make you take your eyes away from the picture for entire three hours. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, most of the time exciting... It was really cool special effects. Too bad it's a whole year left until the next movie.

•[cyrus]• 12-28-2001 01:39 PM

My favorite part was when they are in the great TOMB/MINE.....when the wizard stops that HUGE creature after they fight the ORCS'

The Magog On The March 12-28-2001 03:53 PM

Yeah, but a few scenes were horribly corny. For example: That what's-her-face-lady riding on the horse carrying Frodo.. yeash. That was cheeeeeeesey! And those Ring Wraiths had the most annoying screech EVER! It wasn't frightening, it wasn't cool, it was just REALLY loud and REEAAALLY annoying. I kinda disliked how afew things were never really explained; they just kind of appeared, then left really fast. And I didn't say the ending was cheesy (even though the whole Sam thing was), I know it's a trilogy, I've read the books. Never liked 'im, and the movie isn't really changing my mind, but oh well.

Danny 12-28-2001 05:53 PM

I thought the Hobbits' accents were done very well. And I'm English, so I'm allowed to judge... On the other hand, Strider couldn't seem to be able to decide what his accent was... Listening to him speak was like taking a guided tour of the British Isles...

Apart from Strider's accent, my only real complaint was that Kate Blanchett's acting was quite poor, which is a shame, because she is a talented actress, usually...

Fazerina 12-28-2001 06:45 PM

I've read the book like ten times and "the Hobbit" also and I'm such a huge fan. :) It's my "summer book".. I read it every summer because then I have the time for it. Coz there aint school or anything.

I didn't really like the idea of a movie because it's such a great book and I thought that a movie would destroy all my images etc.. And it's really annoying that everyone is so interested about the movie and are talking about it everywhere and are so huge fans when they haven't even read the book..

And that annoys me that it's a yankee film..
Well it's done in New Zealand but you know what I mean.. And Elijah Wood as Frodo.. Well after seeing the movie I have to say that he was quite a good pick after all..
Too cute as a hobbit thoug..

I decided not to like the film but I liked it anyway.. It was a good movie. But not really worth al the fuss.. And I still think that the book is much greater experiment. And now I don't like the idea that next time when I'm reading the book I will probably see Frodo looking like Elijah Wood and so on..

Mud101: You mean when they are in Moria and Gandalf stops Balroc? :)

Sydney 12-29-2001 03:36 AM

I saw it the other night and I thought it was wonderful, although I must admit my expectations of the film were neutral. I find it rare for a movie to actually pull you in as deep as Lord of the Rings did, it felt like a real place with people and creatures experiencing genuine ordeals. The visuals were georgeous, I especially liked Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, she was beautiful.

Since the Star Wars series has been destroyed with some pitiful new additions, Lord of the Rings fills a place in movies that has been vacant since the Phantom Menace.

I give The Fellowship of the Ring 9.5 out of 10.

BigBroSig 12-29-2001 04:28 AM

I loved it!!!! it was really really really cool. I plan to read the books soon. I wish I had read them sooner.
My fav. character was Gandolf.

She was beautiful, but she didn't bother to act...

Sl'askia 12-29-2001 12:54 PM

Hobbits are also refered to as Halfings in the book, just so you know.
I agree the movie seemed to 'rush through', but remember they had to take out some events and scenes in the book in order to ensure the movie was a decent length. (they took out the whole bit with Tom Bomadal and the selling of Bags End).
I didn't like how they took out that one elf dude (I don't remember the name) and replaced him with Arwen. In the book she was never on a horse...never left Riverdale in fact (from what I have read so far that is). Another bit they changed: The broken sword was on Strider in the book, where it was in Riverdale the whole time in the movie.
ACK! I am nicpicking! Stop it! *slaps herself*
ow...thats better. Anyway...my favorite character has to be the dwarf (sorry don't remember his name either...*sigh* I am only at the council part of the book...)

Edit: one more little thing...I read in an article that to read the book outloud would take you 40 hrs...yikes...

[ December 29, 2001: Message edited by: Dragadon ]

Danny 12-29-2001 01:03 PM

The Dwarf Dude was Gimli, son of Gloin [which, I was annoyed to discover, was pronounced 'Gloyn' in the film, whereas I think it should be pronounced 'Glow-in'], and was played by John Rhys-Davis, I think. His name had a Rhys in the middle, anyway.

I had a set of audio tapes of the Lord of the Rings, and it filled 11 cassettes, both sides... So that's 16 1/2 hours... But then they weren't reading the story aloud on those tapes, they were acting it out, so i guess it wouldn't be as long, even though they didn't cut any out...

TheBlueScrab 12-29-2001 03:16 PM

I visited this movie yesterday with lector!
And it was sooo geil!
I love the movie.
The characters are phantastic.
My favourite character is Legolas(Orlando Bloom) an Elb he is so sexy..yamy!

Another part I wish they hadn't taken out. The part where Frodo was in the river facing the Ringwraiths.

Frodo: "Go back!Go back to the Land of Mordor, and follow me no more!"
Ringwraiths: *laughing* "Come back! Come back! To Mordor we will take you!"

I don't know why...but I really liked those lines...*grin*

oddite4456 12-29-2001 10:20 PM

Yeah, Lord of the Rings was great. I liked the Dwarf guy with the axe. I thought the orcs looked pretty good and so did the Baelrog! (The thing that killed Gadalf)

Fazerina 12-30-2001 04:41 PM

Gandalf didn't die. He'll come back as Gandalf the White.

I think it's really cool that J.R.R. Tolkien took influencies to the Lord of the Rings from the Icelandic sagas and from "Kalevala" wich is the national epic of Finland. :D

And he studied many languages wich includes Finnish. :D And qenya the language of the elves is based on Finnish.
J.R.R.T. on Finnish: "It was like finding a basement full of this wine, wich you had never tasted before and wich was amazing by it's quality and taste. I got drunk from it."

By the way.. did you know that while writing the book Frodo's name was for a long time Bingo Baggins.. Thank god he changed the name..

I think that most of us already knew that, since we have also read the books. Those here who haven't will probably be pissed off at you for spoiling it for them, too. Either way, that was kind of a bad move on your part... ;)

Fazerina 12-30-2001 05:08 PM

Yeah..I thought of that just after sending the message. Sorry...

Oddworld Master 12-30-2001 08:24 PM

thanx so much for giving that away that spoiled it for me i just started the first book! oh well. i agree with you thebluescrab frodo is cute ;)

The Less-Than-Big Bro 12-30-2001 08:37 PM

I have only one MAJOR complaint about the movie over the book. I couldn't STAND watching Arwen save Frodo! Why Arwen? But, otherwise, it was good. With Frodo's single tear rolling down his porcelain face. I especially liked the Uruk Hai, and the scenes with Saruman, but that's another story.

General Grakkus 12-31-2001 02:08 AM

My favorite part was the "three arrow scene" (thats all Im giving away :D ) btw correct me if Im worng but isnt Orlando Bloom the older brother on Malcom in the Middle? just a thought...

TheBlueScrab 12-31-2001 12:49 PM

Hmm...my favourite part was the scene with the elb princess and Frodo who the "water elbs" help the princess.
That was geil...HeHe
And the part in the beginning who the Humans and elbs army fight vs. the orks army.
We (Lector, Mother of lector with her boyfriend and me)watch the movie on Thursday again.
I´m looking forward to see it again.
Yaaah!
I´m addicted to see Lord of the rings...lol

I saw it yesterday!! It was one of the most enjoyable movie experieces I've had in a long time. The Prologue was fantastic, the armies, Elrond in the frontline, and specialy Sauron were all made so well. I loved how they made us really frightened by the One Ring. I think it should deserve an acting nomination itself :) I think Liv Tyler did a very good job. I didn't bother seeing her character more than in the book, because she is simply gorgeous.

The film is not mediocre, it was a huge achievement, and I intend to see it at least another couple of times in the next weeks.

9.9 out of 10.

SeaRex 01-02-2002 03:51 PM

I thought it was excellent. It didn't seem to last 3 hours at all. I enjoyed every bit of it. :D

Roop 01-09-2002 08:16 PM

I saw it a cpl weeks ago and I heard they had already finished the other two movies but they wouldnt release them until next christmas and the next one the christmas after that.

The Magog On The March 01-09-2002 09:23 PM

Frodo was WAY too wimpy in this one (whoo, he get's stabbed.. then he cwys! Aaaaaw!) Eh, I perfer the messed up cartoon to the movie.

Lampion 01-10-2002 02:22 AM

I saw it again :). Tears rolled down my face when Gandalf was caught by the Balrog, although I was completely aware of what was going to happen in that scene!
Next sunday, I'll be there again, for the third time! :)

Teal 01-10-2002 02:25 PM

*is reminded of the "fans" who watched the films through about 30 times just so they could nitpick it to pieces...*

One thing I remember reading was that they were moaning there were still stickers on the apples Strider threw to Pippin and Merry - seeing as the apples were only on screen for all of likely half a second, how on Earth did they spot that they had stickers on...? Did they "freeze-frame" the entire film just to spot it...?

*grins* Anyway, I enjoyed it (although I still think Gollum should have had a Welsh accent - I think it's the "My Precioussss" that does it...)

Edit: *re-reads M101's comment and sniggers helplessly behind hand* "Lord of the Ring" - sorry, but according to one of my old housemates there's a porn movie apparently been made going by that title, and I'm not going to read anything into it...(No, I haven't seen it myself, Melvin...)

I haven't seen Lord of the Rings yet... I am going to soon, as the book very good, and it gets praised quite a bit(thought that doesn't make it a good movie)
Something that I found odd was that Peter Jackson directed it. It really doesn't seem like a film he would do, because he usually does low, low budget, demented horror/comedies. (Bad Taste, Dead Alive/Brain Dead, Meet the Feebles) He also did The Frighteners and Heavenly Creatures, two films that aren't as low budget, and more mainstream than the others... From low budget, very gory horror films to big budget action/fantasy...
Well, mostly every one here seems to like it...I hope I will too.
Teal: Suuuure ya haven't.... *wink, wink*

Danny 01-10-2002 07:11 PM

Well, Jean-Pierre Jeunet directed Alien: Resurrection, so these things happen...

MrBoj 01-10-2002 11:12 PM

I've seen the movie twice, and both times, I cried when Gandalf went down with the Balrog. The music is very impressive, with the chanting chorus. I cant believe some of the things I am hearing here. Frodo a wimp? Maybe he appeared that may in the movie, but you take a spear to the chest and see how you fare. The most unlikely character is te most courageous as he is not corrupted by the ring as so many others would be.

I didnt find any parts corny, at all. How ca you say it was "cheesy?" Maybe it's just 'cause I've read te trilogy three times. One thing to keep in mind, the events of LotR is the very end of the history of Middle-earth. thousands of years have passed since the overthrough of Morgoth the Enemy at the end of the first age. Sauron is only the servant of Morgoth and carries over his evil into the following ages. (as you can see, I'm a Tolkien freak)

The reason there are 3 movies is that there are 3 movies, hence a trilogy. the Hobbit was a precursor, sorta like an introduction to Middle-earth. The Hobbit was originally published in 1937, while the LotR was published in 1955-1956. any thing you are unsure of, I'll be happy to answer.

Silversnow 01-12-2002 08:33 PM

I'm going to watch it again. I look forward to it again. I'll buy it on video and just watch it over and over again. I love Lord of the rings.

About the screech of the ringwraiths.. After thinking about it over and over again, I've finally realized why it sounds like it sounds. You're supposed to feel that way. "Oooh, I hate that scream.". You're probably supposed to feel bad when they scream, so you want to get rid of them. I'm not sure about that, but anyway... Why is it only January? Can't it be December already? I want to see The two towers...

I think they showed waay to little of Gollum in the movie. It's bad, since Gollum, Sam and Gimli are my favourite chars. He got like 1.5 minutes in a 3 hours movie. Oooh whyyy? I hope to see much more of Gollum. More Gollum!!

Oddness 01-13-2002 02:30 AM

I've seen it twice now, and it made me cry both times :o Most of the actors and settings were absolutely *perfect* - exactly how I imagined them - and the bits they left out were almost unnoticeable. I only have a few criticisms - 1. Sauron is apparently pronounced Sour-ron - not Sore-on as I had always imagined it; 2. Sauron, when you see him (which you shouldn't!) looks like a cheap imitation of a bad guy in a power ranger episode; 3. The Balrog looks more like the devil than the putrid creature I anticipated him to be.

Silversnow: You're not supposed to see him *at all* in FOTR!

Oh, and Aragorn is HOT!! :D

abe22 01-13-2002 06:30 AM

I didn't get the bit where the kid gets stabbed and he kinda can't breath Then he's ok and can breath but why wouldn't you be able to breath in the first place if the sword didn't touch his skin that was stupid.

MrBoj 01-13-2002 08:34 PM

SilverSnow: yes, as oddness said, Smeagol, otherwise known as Gollum, appears only briefly in the Fellowship of the Rings. His appearance is little more than what you saw in the movie. He plays a much larger role later on, so don't worry. ;)

Oddness: the reason you saw Sauron in the beginning was because that was thousands of years in the past from when Frodo and the Fellowship set out on their quest. He still had his physical form, but was destroyed as you saw by Isildur. His spirit, however, lives on in the ring. He will regain physical stregnth again once he regains enough power. that whole thing was like a little background as to the origins of the One Ring, the ring of power. And yes, his armor did look sorta like a Power Ranger's costume, but more sinister, and not as cheesy.

abe22: Frodo had the mithril armor on, which is vurtuely impenetrable. He was gasping for air as if someone had punched him in the chest, a very big wallop. And he's not a kid, he's a hobbit, just to clarify things. :)

abe22 01-13-2002 09:05 PM

I know that he had that special armor on but why would he gasp for air if it didn't even touch his skin it's weird because it touched his armor so he wouldn't be gasping for air in the first place. Its not like the sword was like a fist thats flat and can make vibrations the sword is sharp and kinda thin why would it make him winded if it didn't touch his skin I don't think a sword could make you winded I know what I want to say but I don't know how to word this. And Why didn't the big thing just choke him with his big hands? Why do the good guys always Win? I have not seen one movie where the bad guys win. Ok I am rabbling on here I'll shut up know.

Steve 01-13-2002 10:19 PM

if you want to see good guy's die read greek trageties(sp?).
