Oddworldian's gone for good
I figured I'd make a new topic, announcing my site's departure since some were asking about it.
As I said in one of the other threads, I'm not going to be running Oddworldian anymore. I'm going to be busy in coming months, with little time for running a site that needs to be constantly updated. Also, I'm finding myself becoming less and less interested in Oddworld. I don't know why, it's simply loosing it's appeal for me. The forums will stay up, and I'll remain an active Administrator, because I love these forums and the people who inhabitant them. |
(this was originally for one of the now closed topics...but it was closed while I was typing it *shrug*)
I know how you feel Syd, I am losing interest myself...as are some of my good friends on here. The only reason I stick around is for my friends, my fics, and the RPG...I rarely venture into General anymore as well. In the beginning it used to be Off-Topic that rarely caught my interest...now its the other way around... Which brings up the question: Has Oddworld lost so much of its magic recently that some of the long standing fans are now losing interest and even leaving? For many (me included) I believe it was just a passing phase..a fad if you want to call it that. I think this is for mainly for the more 'casual' fans like me. Now for the more Hard core fans...who knows... Ok I am rambling...I'll shut up now... |
Good for you, Syd. I lost my interest in Oddworld a long time ago. However, I still kept coming to the forums because of all the interesting people here. Notice I have barely, if any, posts in General Oddworld Discussion. This is because I just don't care about Oddworld any more. However, I do care about the people here and Off-Topic Discussion is where the people are.
|
Okay, I just noticed this. Either Sydney is just being a tad careless or Sydney isn't Sydney.
I've never known Sydney to spell something wrong, but look at this: "it's simply loosing it's appeal for me." Loosing? Is it just me, or does Sydney sound like someone who can't speak English correctly in this sentence... "I love these forums and the people who inhabitant them." The people who INHABITANT them? Hmm.... I'm probably just being paranoid, but you never know.... P.S. If this is Sydney, please do not take offense by any of the comments I just made. |
Lol, let me assure you this is the real Sydney! I'm human, I'm known to make the occasional spelling/grammatical error. My excuse is that I typed it in a hurry. :o
Dragadon, I feel that Oddworld's image has had a drastic change with Munch's Oddysee. Many people like it, but I can't say I'm one of them. It seems to be directed at a younger audience now, in the process it's lost some of its splendour. |
everyone makes typos Daniel, Syd probably just missed it when he proof read his post.
*messes up Daniels hair* don't be so paranoid...thats my job hehe |
Have to agree with you there Syd...Oddworld does seem to have gone a bit...'kiddie' dispite the rating on it. I mean...that 'dirty' feel is gone...even in the factories...
|
Yeah, i've kind of lost my appeal in Oddworld. I only stay here because of the friends and interesting Off Topic things going on here. And of course, the RPG and Fanwork. Basicly, I see two sides of Oddworld:
Officail Fan created It is the officail side of it that I have lost interest of. The fan based side, however, is very interesting. I don't think i'll leave it. It's not as good as it used to be, but it's still good. Actually I think we are witnessing the end of an era. The Oddworld era. Anyway, a suggestion: Why not leave Oddworldian in the hands of a few other people who you trust, and is up to maintaining it, e.t.c? - DH [ January 21, 2002: Message edited by: Dark Hood ] |
So Syd u'r leaving 4 good..?? And when r u leaving??? Well i'm sad to c u leave, i don't really like oddworld any more either, i just come here now to talk to everyone, well if there is anyway i can help the forums while u r gone i will be mor ethan happy to help.

pay attention dude...Syd is NOT leaving. He is just shutting down Oddworldian.
|
You don't pay attention very well, do you, Surfacing?
Sydney isn't leaving. He is just closing Oddworldian. Pay attention in future. . . - DH |
Dragadon Syd said the Forums are staying up while he leaves and he is still gonna be an active admin member.. what u mean it's closing..??

I've seen it before, Fans that got really were bitten and as time goes by, it gets old...and new players come in. Maybe when everything's been discussed everybody's got their own life to go to...I've hung in there longer than most..And I never was really big on video games...until Oddworld.
I've seen several such sites come and go. Makes me feel like an ol' lady...Zelnak's Oddworld site, Oddworld Inhabited,Gyges Oddworld site, Kaikul's Oddysee.. I thought Oddworldian was the best yet... Too bad you couldn't pass the site on to somebody else who's fresh bitten and got some web know how and they could keep it going...I hate to se it go... I've watched Oddworld's choices (like going to X-box) and wondered if they might paint themselves into a corner and end up out of reach of too much of their fan base.... I haven't got Munch yet- Still interested in playing but haven't been able to get the X-box yet...I hope to get it if I can. I'm getting spammed up the wazoo because I've entered some contests trying to win one. Is the next game gonna be on X-box or X-box 2? If I have to buy a new console every few years, I may not be able to keep up..Don't know about everyone else. From what I've heard, MO got more of the outdoors in the game, I though AE had too much factory and it felt a little more oppressive to me..As for going kiddie, I hope not..Some movies do that, first one is really good and then the sequels parody itself until it gets ridiculous. I guess a lot of people were disappointed too when some things were cut out of the game..Maybe that's why OWI was so secretive about details-reveal too much and then people feel cheated when something gets cut... Maybe waiting too long for details can kill enthusiasm too... [ January 21, 2002: Message edited by: Niteowl ] [ January 23, 2002: Message edited by: Niteowl ] |
I agree with the 'end of an era' comments. A lot of my favourite games series seem to be doing that nowadays.
Spyro - First one was charming, sweet and a joy to play. The second one was so superb it hurt. The third one seemed like a lazy remake, with a good dollop of naffness thrown in. The fourth one seems too close to the third; I think the series is wearing thin. I think Insomniac did the right thing by ditching it and letting someone else (namely Digital Eclipse Software) make a mess of it. Crash - Naughty Dog wisely realised that the Bandicoot has run his course, which is why they've put their efforts into the gobsmackingly brilliant Jak and Daxter. The fourth Crash game is basically just a remix of 3 with far better graphics. WipEout - The first game was high-octane and hard-edged (despite the fact that its graphics now look worse than vomit on a vinyl jacket), and strangely ethereal at the same time. The second was just mindblowing. For speed, it's second only to Fusion, and it has the best soundtrack and ship design of all WipEout's PSX incarnations. Then Pygnosis made a spin-off for the N64, which despite being good fun; was mainly a rip-off of the first two PSX games. Then Wip3out came for PSX, and boy did they screw up that time. Apart from the odd moment (XPander & Know Where To Run), Wip3out's soundtrack is as dull as hell, the 'good' ships have got too good while the 'bad' ships have got even worse, creating a stupidly wide chasm. And there's no 'futuristic' feeling; it's not neon enough and feels too todayish. And W3SE is a commendable effort to recreate the tracks of WipEout and WipEout 2097, but it really destroyed them in the process (I mean, they took away the speed pads before the big jump on Gare D'Europa, and they lit up the dark tunnel and took away the falling snow in Sagarmatha! And don't get me started on how much they've moved Altima's weapon/speed grids), and it reeks of cash-in. WipEout really should not have gone beyond its first two incarnations in the 32bit era. Thankfully, Fusion looks like the series' saving grace; it got a 9/10 in OPS2M, and I've played the demos to death. And despite the lack of Tim Wright and mitDR, the soundtrack is brain-meltingly octane. Which is good. In short, Fusion is the biggest, baddest, boldest racer ever to hit a console. But as I said in another topic, lots of games go on hiatus for a while. The Metal Gear series totally skipped the Genesis and SNES days and was resurrected on PSX. Metroid skipped the N64 era, and is now back for GameCube. Luigi went on hiatus for N64, now Mario's on hiatus (not including Mario Kart 64, of course). Ninja Gaiden skipped the PSX/N64 days and is now possibly coming for XBox. After a while, most good franchises go on hiatus for awhile, then come back when the time's right. Let's just hope that Oddworld's not dead; just resting. Don't forget also that the move to PS2 bollocksed it up a bit as well. OWI used some third-party software to help make the game engine, and because it was compatible with both PS2 and XBox; it could be ported over. But the changeover wasn't entirely successful, and so they had to cut out a lot of mangled code. The PS2, whilst being able to push fewer polygons at a time than XBox, actually has more things called GFLOPS than the XBox. I'm not entirely sure what they do, but apparently it means that the PS2 can actually handle more complex fire and water effects than the Box can. And since AE used the same game engine as AO, it's likely that ME will use MO's engine. As Danny said in another topic, let's hope to see a big improvement in SO; when they've got all the pooey code cleaned up. Lanning himself has even said that he wasn't totally happy with MO. It's a shame that you've decided to shut down Oddworldian, but I understand. I'm starting to lose interest in Oddworld myself, and I sometimes wish that Oddworld had stayed as a one-hit wonder, shrouded in awe. Let's just hope it isn't permanent, and that OWI will rekindle our excitement with a mindblowing game in the future, and there will be a glorious reunion of fulfilled hope. As Niteowl said, we've waited ages (due to the console switch), and that's helped to kill our enthusiasm. That's the reason why so many people have walked out on the whole-year-overdue WipEout Fusion (not me, though. Unashamed WipEout nerd over here!) Edit: shit, that was a big post! Awww....Thats sad....I love oddworldian and
It'll be sad to see it go.....I would be willing to run it for you but Maybe you wouldn't want me to ruin its sad Shipwreck :( I myself have gone out of oddworld a few times but now I am back in and Raring to go! Ohh well times pass but still I'll take the burden if you'll let me Syd and I'm sure many others would too. |
*Decides to make one last appearance*
Aye, Syd, I am in the same boat as you, so to speak. My interest in Oddworld has been steadily declining for quite some time (hence the reason for longer distances between my posts) and recently it hit rock bottom like an anchor hitting the ocean floor and it's staying there... I think for good. I loved AO and AE for their, as I think TF put this at one time, darkness... their strangeness: it was like some place I could explore and find something new every time. However, even though I haven't played MO, it seems childish. It's just lost what made it Oddworld for me... I can't really explain it. The same goes for all video games. I used to love playing video games and such, but now I've become too busy and it's just something that's passed from me. I have been poking around the forums, even though I have said to many that I will be leaving. This may be true, but I have decided that I still will check them every day as I have for almost a year now. I may stay because of my friends, but I don't know if I ever will post again. I love this place, it really has affected me and I don't know if I can just stop coming. So anywho, enough of the mush, plus I'm rambling. *Bows and exits* |
Yeah
I think it was Munch's Oddysee. I'm starting to lose interest in oddworld. I will stick in the forums though! :D |
oddworld itself still interests me a great deal but MOjust took most of the fun away
especially since they decided to take away all that awsome speach between aqll the other species all the moods everyone gets the muds would be expressing just that almost everything that oddworld games had that i like they took away. ![]() |
Sydney...
I'm realy sad... Your site was the best about Oddworld :( You have a lot of news :( and now... nothing more :( I hope Oddworldian will come back because it was realy good ! but your still there :D that's a very good point ! :D |
I hope OWI recindles the fire that has been lost here for so long. Maybe something will change we still have three games left in the seris. :(

I don't really have much to say here, since I've already detailed my loss of interest in Oddworld and my disillusionment with (what I've seen of) Munch's Oddysee in other topics...
I never really went to Oddworldian (or, for that matter, Oddworld-Web or Oddworld.com), since the forums here have always been more fun, but I can appreciate its greatness from afar... Hehe... Sydney's a trendsetter... I lose interest in Oddworld, nothing happens. Sydney loses interest in Oddworld, half the forums imitate him... ;) j/k |
Um no rettick, I've been lost interest in oddworld like months ago.
|
Instead of arguing, I shall merealy draw your attention to the abbreviation "j/k" at the end of my post. In case you are unaware, this stands for "just kidding", and is an indication that what I have just said is not to be taken seriously...
|
No one's arguing with you dude.
|
Well, unlike most of you, I still LOVE Oddworld. I thought MO was just a slight change that added a twang of action and a pinch of comedy. MO was great for me, if not for you. And to those of you who have lost interest in Oddworld, that's fine with me. I will be sad to see Oddworldian go. You had a great site, Syd, and I will miss it. But, we still have you on the forums, and that's better than nothin'! ;)
|
I to have lost intrest in Oddworld. I still love AO and AE they were so great. When I first joined the Forums it was all about Oddworld, and I hardly ever posted in Off topic now it's the other way round. To tell you the truth I think when oddworld gets a little bit older it's going to go way down hill but lets hope that it picks itself up. I think it's with every game as well just look at spyro as 1,2 said, the 3rd one sucks compared to the first and second one.
|
Syd had a great site, one of the best of all OW sites. I'm sad to see it go, but... I'm just thankful he's still at the forums. I would rather converse with him and read his posts...
I still love AO and AE, but I don't really come here for oddworld any more. I've made a lot of friends here, and some great conversations go on... (another problem is that MO was a bit... well, lame. It wasn't dark, intriguing, grimy, intellectual nor as fun as the others...) |
Hmmmm,....well good thing your staying on the forums, But, your link is to oddforums.....right?
Sydney, ummmm, I was wondering, I'm making a new site..... And I'd like to use some of your designs if posible...........Please don't yell at me for asking, but most (all) of the desings on the microsoft front page well....Suck, bigtime. ( if I can, just send me a private massage to upload some boarders, footers, ect. Don't worry, I won't steal your site, just want to have cool Oddworldy design kinda thing) If not just say so..... Mudokon101... ![]() [ January 22, 2002: Message edited by: Mudokon101 ] |
I don't know. I love AO and AE. Maybe because it was different. MO is just like an ordinary video game. That's what makes it sooo uugghhh.
|
I think MO lost the "dark" and "grimy" feel found in AE and especially AO. In any case, I'm sad to see Oddworldian go. Let's hope Oddworld gets a face lift and ME gets the grimy feel back.
|
geez, you people pit a real damper on my day! I finally have enough for a freakin X-box, and now you say that MO is not the same os the previous games? To "kiddie?" DAMNATION!!!! What the hell? I'm still gonna buy it, still gonna play it, but, wow, what a turn around.
You know, MO has been one of the major things that has kept me interested in Oddworld. You see, I don't know how many of you realize this, but Oddworld is NOT JUST ANOTHER VIDEO GAME. IT'S SOMETHING MUCH MORE. IT'S DEEP, FANTASY NOVEL DEEP. I MEAN, GEEZ, IT'S A WHOLE FREAKIN PLANET FOR CRYING OUT LOWD! It's a parody of our own world, from the evil, greedy corporate tyranny that plagues society, to the fanatical, anti-technology "treehuggers" that are just as crazy as those they oppose. And the first 2 games only glimpsed the surface, only a glimpse at a whole new world. This only drives me ever onwards towards the discovery of the rest of Oddworld. the first time I played that demo I got from the Playstation Underground back in 1997, I was hooked for life. Back in 1997, that's right, it was one of my first playstation titles, and one I play to this day. I'm sorry, but you can't change my mind, my intereszt is now only higher. People don't realize exaclty what Oddworld is: a whole other world that exists in all of us, since we all share the characteristics of the Oddworldian characters that are our own alternative reality. [ January 22, 2002: Message edited by: MrBoj ] |
Thanks for the sentiment guys.
Can I just iterate what I said earlier, about other people liking the changes? I'm not saying Oddworld has become bad, but rather it's lost its appeal to me. Other people still love how Oddworld is, I'm not trying to encourage people to think the same way as I. If you've managed to stick by Oddworld through its changes, more power to you. :) As for choosing someone else to take over Oddworldian, I'd rather not. But there's nothing stopping you from building your own Oddworld website. |
I understand Sydney, the same thing happened to me with comics, and even video games. I don't play nearly as much as I used to. Oddworld has been one of my steadfast gaming experiences. I miss it though, I even played Super Mario Bros. on my old SNES in a state of sublime melancholy. Oh, the memories.
And people, read things, don't be taken aback by your ignorance. Remember, research can go a long way. |
uh........... mr. boj i think there are several of us on these forums who understand the complete brilliance of the social satire in the Oddworld universe. But that doesn't mean that we're going to stay interested in it if it doesn't offer anything more than what has already been offered. In fact MO delivered less than what has been offered in the past. I would rather OWI scrapped the whole MO/ME storyline and made another 2-D 32 bit side scroller, than them have put out the sad excuse for a OW game like they did. They made 3 level designs and then based the whole game off of those 3 designs. ohhhhhhhhhhh that's innovation [please insert sacastic voice]. i guess i'm saying that you're not the only one to realize that there's more to the story than meets the eye, but if OWI are going to keep coming out with bullshit like MO, then they can count me out.
