a question for vegitarians
would you be willing to eat meat from something like the cow in hitchhikers guide to the galaxy(an animal that wants to be eaten and can infact state that it does).
|
No. The thought of eating a cow (especially one that requests to be eaten) is nauseating.
|
Cows are not on my menu. Even if they request me to eat them. Same with any other animal.

My gosh, do you guys eat anything fun?
|
Of coruse we do. :) Vegie frankferters with beans and mash potato is very nice. . . How about a salad cream sarnie? Or egg, lettace and salad cream? Mmmm. . . Actually I cna't be bothered to think of fun food right now.

Very good point Sydney. *throws-up*
So, Pinky, you call a cow which requests to be eaten fun food? PS, to Sydney: Did you get that PM I sent you? [ December 26, 2001: Message edited by: Gluk Schmuck ] |

Gluk: I just replied to it now. [ December 26, 2001: Message edited by: Sydney ] |
I have very little to add, except to agree with Sydney on this one...

*Slaps forehead* Oh My gawd, I was talking about just eating fruits and vegetables all the time. Not cows. I don't eat cows myself. It's fun to eat! :D! Bwahahaha...

2 Please stop thinking that all meat-eaters are barbarians. We don't 'devour' our food or jump on it slathering and frothing at the mouth... we eat just as civilisedly as you do. 3 It's not bloody when you eat it. 4 They are not 'beings'. Cows, chickens and turkeys, for instance, are deeply stupid. Turkeys are so stupid that they don't have enough sense to come indoors when it's cold and raining, and you can frighten a turkey to death by fluttering bits of paper at it. 5 I don't believe that reputable companies like Sainsbury's would sell meat that hasn't been humanely killed. 6 The topic we're discussing is whether you'd eat an animal that actually wanted to be eaten. To respond to Steve' original question, I see no problems with eating something that wants you to. Another question for vegetarians: you all seem to be against factory farming. How do you feel about eating animals that have died in the wild of natural causes after leading long and happy lives? |
1. You don't need meat to keep you alive; my point was referring specifically to meat eating, not food in general.
2. I didn't say anything about barbarians. Nor did I say that you jumped on your food, or frothed at the mouth. If you deny that you devour meat, I guess that makes you a vegetarian. 3. I described it as bloody for dramatic effect, which I thought was obvious. 4. A creature of low intelligence isn't stripped of its definition as a being. 5. If botched electric shocks and slitting throats isn't considered violent by you, I don't know what is. 6. I was responding to Pinkhaired's general comment against vegetarianism. |
If I was a vegetarian, I would be more skinny as I am now. I'm not that skinny, I do have like muscke and curves and stuff, I don't look anorexic or anything. Meat fills me up, I will go insane if I just eat legumes. We don't devour meat like barbaric animals Sydman. Add alittle adventure to ya life. Meat! Bwahahaahahahah. Yummy. No excuse me, I gotta eat this cheeseburger with pickles and ketchup and everything *drools*

Do you vegie guys eat fish from shops? I just want to know.
|

Hitchhikers guide is a great series though. "I'm so cool you could keep a slab of meat fresh in my pants for a week, and I'm so hip I can't see over my thighs!" Ah that wacky Zaphod. Edit: Oh, and to that fish question: Eugh! I've always hated seafood, even when I was still eating meat! [ December 27, 2001: Message edited by: The Magog On The March ] |

Ooo, a double oxymoron. 'Vegetarian buffalo' and 'buffalo wings'.

I may not be a veggian...but if I meet an animal that begged me to kill eat it it would sicken me...I would be thinking has he no will to live?.
Yes I do believe that all animals are intelligent each in their own way. I do agree with DH that it would be better if we all hunted our own food, but we have become too moderized now. My point is this: If mankind hadn't gotten so far away from nature...we wouldn't be having this debate. |
Why? Because we'd still be barbaric Hunter-Gatherers?
|
we weren't 'barbaric'...it may have seemed that way though...we did what we did to survive..you know...the old 'survival of the fittest' thing.
|
:
|
I'm just asking - when you said "we wouldn't be having this conversation if we hadn't grown so far from nature", did you mean that that would be a good thing or a bad thing?
|
"If mankind hadn't gotten so far away from nature...we wouldn't be having this debate."
What I meant here was that if humans stayed as Hunter/Gathers the world would still be in balance..which is a good thing. Due to our advancement the world is fast becoming unbalanced...which is a bad thing. The world will recover yes...but it will take a long time after humans stop destroying it for it to do so. Another way I think you are asking goes back to another topic (I don't remember which one it was), where I mentioned that our advancement was causing us to weaken our gene pool...thus preventing favorable advancement in an evolution sense. |
I disagree. The world has never been, and never will be, in balance. And I think it is a good thing that people who would [by your rules] have died in the wild are now being given the chance to contribute something to the world. The fact is that, for better or worse, evolution among humans no longer occurs by survival of the fittest. If you had a genetic disability, would you still be preaching that people like you should have died to encourage favourable evolution?
|
if I am not fit to survive, then so be it...let nature do as it will to me. If something was to happen to me and only a machine would be keeping me alive...I would chose death.
But that is just me. As I stated in another topic, I do not wish that we suddenly just stop using that which has kept us alive. Nay...that would cause too much suffering and pain...which I do not wish upon anyone. But one more point. If man had never left the way of nature...there wouldn't be any of those with 'defects' to preach to...as they would have perished not long after birth. |
I'm not talking about being on artificial life support, I'm just talking about genetic disabilities that would mean that a person would not survive in the wild, but can be allowed to live a full life in our society.
:
|
to be honest and quite frank, yes. The gene pool would be purer that way. But again...only if we hadn't strayed from the path of nature. I would not ask that a disabled or 'defective' individual be left out in the wild to die now. I may have 'unfavorable' opinions about this...but I am not an inhumane monster.

humans are a case of overperfection (I know we aren't perfect but thats what it's called) much like sabertooth tigers. sabertooth tigers were so good at what they did they killed all available food then died out but in this case this happened many times. we if we don't stop what we're doing will become extinct only we will take a lot of animals with us.
|

2. Agreed. Depressing, isn't it? 3. Now this is a bit exaggerated, isn't it? The Sun will not become a Red Giant for sevral Billions of years, which is longer than most species can expect to survive naturally anyway. By the time the Sun kills everything, Humans will have been and gone, and Earth will have recovered, and then probably had to face another threat, and recovered from that as well... |
Still Humans will keep on cuting down forests for more humans in this world to live in, and they'll keep on killing animals untill most are extict like tigers nearly are. In five years or so tigers will be wiped on this earth due to humans. Alot more wars will start because of humans And then way in the future this world will be so hi-tech it will be all electric. This world will turn out to be a BIG shit hole.
Well thats my prediction on what the earth will turn out as due to humans. |
There was a movie once called 'Silent Running' (I think). It was about a ship that held that last of the Earths wildlife in pods that were transperent on the top to let sunlight in. Earth by then was nothing but one big city.
One day an order came through from Earth for the crews of these ships to destroy the pods and come home. One guy however, wanted to continue to preserve the last of the wildlife...but the rest of his crewmates only cared about going home. In the end he ended up killing the rest of his crewmates and took control of the ship, by then all but one of the pods have been destroyed. Knowing he was being persued this guy went on the run. But soon he realized that the further he got from the sun...the more the plantlife wilted and started to die. As a last resort, he set up an array of artifical lights to keep the plantlife alive and set a small robot to the task of maintaining it. He then ejected the pod...sending it out and away from those that would want to destroy it...and destroyed the ship..himself along with it. Now...if we do not stop now...this may very well happen. Do we really want the Earth to become nothing but concrete and steel? I don't...I think wildlife is much prettier... |
I know i'm straying off topic a bit, but i need to ask this-
Do any of you feel it's wrong to eat or drink dairy products? or to eat eggs? Because well...that's just silly, but i'd be curious to know how many of you vegans feel that way. As far as the animals being horribly slaughtered, well unfortunatley, i used to work in a slaughter house for a brief time, and while it is gory, the more modernized ones don't seem to interested in slitting throats and electrocuting them. In the SH i worked at, it was all very quick. The cow was simply shot in the head with what looked like an industrial rivet gun..thing. Anyway my point is this- Some people enjoy meat, and i for one, love it. You'd think after working in a slaughter house i'd be repulsed by meat, but i'm not. Does this make me barbaric? no. It just means that i'm aware of the fact that these animals would die any way, so why not enjoy what they have to offer? tasty tasty meat! mmmm... and as fr as your sausage comment Rettick- i tend to stay away from hot dogs, just cause of what's in 'em. ;) |
People seem to have misinterpreted my sausage comment; I was just trying to show how stupid the idea that meat was 'exciting' was. Still, I think what people thought I said was more interesting than what I really said anyway... ;)
A while back, Sydney [I think] posted a picture of all the baby chicks who were being thrown away because the farmer people wanted eggs, and these ones had been fertilised. I know that the Egg and Milk industries also cause suffering to animals, but I still eat, because I like Eggs and Cheese a lot. But at least I don't try and justify it like you lot try and justify eating meat... Besides, I only eat Free Range eggs, as that causes infinitely less suffering than Battery Farming... EDIT: I just noticed Disgruntled's comment: :
2. Meat is vile stuff anyway. It is unhygenically prepared, and has been linked to several diseases, including several forms of cancer. Besides all that, it doesn't taste very nice either - Even my non-vegetarian friends prefer to eat meat substitute products than meat, because they say it tastes so much nicer... [ December 30, 2001: Message edited by: Rettick ] |
Did you know that most veggies and fruit are made by genetic engineering or geneticle made something like that and do you know how you get fruit but its not the season when they are ripe. The year before in the season which it is ripe they put it in this thing (can't remember what it's called) and put all this stuff on it and they keep for ages in this special thing then it gets shipped to the supermarkets so where eating things which are nearly a year old.

2. Have you never heard of Importing? That is how we get fruit at the wrong time of year... |
